Fire, water, round 2

From: Mark

Subject Turn

Sorry I did not get anything out last night.

I will get something out today.

I just want to make sure I am clear.

Harp, Kal, Ran and Ragnar are going to attack until the thing is down. Allistair will try and get a fireball through the door, if possible. Salix is going to try and make sure that if the troll goes down, it is going to stay down. Surin is thinking of moving in to look for a sneek attack.

Mund is going to be shooting his bow unless he is needed to fill a hole in the line.

Subject Fire

I mis-interpreted how Produce Flame would affect the trolls. The flame would have to do the trolls full hp to truly kill it. Decapitate is the only way to kill, unless Allistair can get some really good FB on them.

Did I miss something, or did it just get really quiet?

Are we waiting on Mark to send out a turn?

From: Derek

Subject Fire

I thought fire damage couldn't be regenerated? Or is that 2nd ed. I'm remembering?

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

Mund will not be trying to plug the hole at this time. Mund realizes that he's more useful doing nothing and letting his brother do his thing than attacking and getting in the way. He'll shoot his bow as is possible, but making sure that his brother has the best line-of-sight.

Also, remember that Mund gets to retroactively attack during turn 1.

Subject Turn

I sent out a message this morning saying it would be tonight and summarizing what everyone was going to do.

Did you get that one Kevin?

From: Mark

Subject Fire

Fire and acid can not be regenerated. However, Kevin is thinking of Baldur's Gate.

In that game, you could take a troll to under 0 HP and then do 1 point of fire damage and kill it for good.

In the real game system, you would have to do enough fire damage to equal its total HP to kill it.

Subject Fire

Suck. What about magic weapons?

From: Porter

Subject Fire

But is it correct that decapitating it will keep it dead?

From: Porter

Subject Fire

We can soak them with oil once they are down, and set them on fire.

From: Kevin

Subject Turn

I didn't get this message but I see that it was quoted in one of the other emails today.

From: Mark

Subject Fire

The coup de grace action, which in this situation is basically beheading the thing, will kill the creatures.

Only fire and acid deal actual damage. Everything else is regenerated

From: Porter

Subject Water

What about death by suffocation? Can they survive drowning?

From: Mark

Subject Water

Have you got that much water on you? :)

The regeneration rules say that regeneration does not work againts HP lost due to exposure and lack of food/water, so I guess you could suffocate or drown them. However, I would follow the usual rules for either option, with them regenerating HP not lost due to these factors. They would also get the saves normally due to them in these situations, and they have a high CON value and Fort save.

Subject Water

I'm mostly just speculating.

Subject Distance

Surin's 10 feet away, what's the troll's reach? Would moving in closer provoke an AOO?

From: Mark

Subject Distance

The first 5 feet no, the second 5 feet yes.

Also throwing with in 10 feet provokes an AOO.

Subject Round 2

Round 1 Initiative: Mund (21), Harp (18), Salix (18), Surin (17), T1-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9)

As Kal steps out of the way Mund realizes that he has a clear shot at the monster. His bow arm locks in place and the arrow is back by his bottom lip almost before he knows it. With the practiced ease that comes from years of hunting the barbarian sights down the shaft and releases. Somehow Mund misses even at this short range (AC16, 2+11=13, miss). Cursing under his breath Mund pulls another arrow from his quiver and has the string back in a heart beat. His second arrow also goes wide (AC16, 6+6=12, miss) clattering against the stone wall next to the monster, the wooden splinters showering down on Kal

Round 2 Initiative: Harp (18), Salix (18), Surin (17), T1-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Harp takes advantage of Kal flanking the monster and lays into it with his sword again (AC16, 14+14=28, hit, damage 13). His sword cuts deep into the things thigh, more green blood spurting from the wound.

Salix realizes that someone will have to behead the creatures once they are down or they will start getting up. With the troll that the party is fighting now looking very cut up, Salix moves forward, drawing his scimitar as he goes. Moving around Ragnar and next to Harp he tries to duck as the troll claws at him (AC17,17+9=26, hit, damage 12). The sharp talons cut through the leather armor and almost penetrate the padding beneath. Gasping for breath he tells Harp and Ragnar "Keep them off of me. I'll cut their heads off when they fall." He then waits for the thing to die(Readied action).

Surin, another axe already in his hand is just barely able to stop himself before he throws. Damn it Salix, you almost got a splitting head ache the halfling thinks. Trying to find a better location, Surin moves to the right, keeping plenty of distance from the trolls.

The troll turns and claws at Ranthir, the source of his most pain. The claws lash out (AC21, 15+9=24, hit, 16+9=25,hit, damage 41) and both pierce the fine chain mail armor. The long arms of the troll bulge and rip away at the flesh beneath, rending flesh. Ranthir almost passes out from the pain as his chest is almost torn open. He keeps enough sense about him to pull his head back as the thing tries to bite out his throat (AC21, 6+4=10,miss). The other trolls roar in the background, calling out curses in some vaguely familiar language.

Ran, reeling from the pain, swings his sword at the arms holding him. His sword, enhanced by the prayers of the clerics, severs the arm (AC16,15+11=26,hit, damage 11) of the monster at the elbow. The creature's eyes roll up in the back of it's head and it crashes to the floor. Ranthir, grasping for breath, steps back, yelling "Mund, get up here. I'm hurt bad. Take my place." The fighter fumbles at the pouch at his waist, looking for the healing potion he knew was there.

Ragnar is torn between keeping his place and blocking the advance of any of the other trolls if they try and get through or going to help Ranthir. Looking around quickly and noticing that Allistair would have a clear shot at the troll if he moved, the dwarf does. Stepping to the right, he shouts at the mage "Allistair, fireball, right through here, before they get a chance to attack.

Allistair hardly needs Ragnar suggestion. He had been moving around, trying to find an opening. Ragnar's moving to the side allows Allistair to take one step to the side and chant the fireball spell. Trying to get the most bang for his spell, he targets where three of them are grouped together. He finishes the chant and the spark leaps from his hand and flies true. A silent explosion goes off and the three are engulfed in flames (REF save, DC16, T3 13+4=17, save, T4 6+4=10, fail, T5 17+4=21, save,Damage T3 10, T4 20, T5 10). The smell of burning flesh fills the air.

Kal wants to charge the trolls but realizes that with Ranthir hurt as badly as it seemed Harps plan of having the door control how many trolls they have to fight is a good one. However, with no foe in front of him, he decides to do some damage anyway. Chanting the mage arrow spell, he points his rapier at the closest of the three trolls in the middle of the room (T5 ). Three bolts of energy fly from the tip of the weapon and strike the thing in its still smoldering chest (Damage 9).

Mund was just getting ready to set another arrow to the bow when he sees Ranthir almost get disemboweled by the trolls. How could he live through that. He is even more amazed when Ran kills the creature while it is trying to rip him in half. The fighter stumbles back, blood pouring from the gaping wound in his belly, commanding Mund to take his place. Mund drops his bow and starts to move forward. As he pulls his axe free, he sees Ragnar step over towards where Ran was and Ally throw one of those ballfire spells. It makes a lot of flash but none of the trolls fall. Mund then notices that there is an almost open path from the trolls to his brother. He moves up to the left of Ragnar, filling the spot.

OODM: Round 2 is over. I need round 3 actions. Salix did not behead the creature this round because the coup de grace is a full round action.

Which is the troll that went down, T2 or T1?
