Cadfael Decides For Us

From: Scott

Subject: Re: The underground trail; hiding

"I would rather that we passed them by, if possible," Mission says. His skin is beginning to itch at the touch of Sa'id's spell-- and his feet long to move away from the mage, break the hold of the spell. But he remains still. As still as Stone. "They may lead us to right where we need to go-- and following them, we can make sure to avoid any traps, or other nonsense."

"Right now we don't know for certain who those... men were. If they are enemies, then Rennik is right, and things will be worse for us if they join a larger group," says Garyth.

"Still, things being as they are," he continues, glancing sidelong at Cadfael, "more wounds will make us all the weaker when we get there. And we don't know for sure that they are on Elise's side. We need more information."

Let me know when you reach consensus, so I can write the next turn.

Thanks.

Farron has nothing to add to the discussion. He will do as the others decide.

The sound clanking metal in the darkness moving slowly and awkwardly away from the party makes clear Cadfael's opinion.

Rennik considers Garyth's words and sees the wisdom in them.

"It would be good to follow them. They seem to know the way, and they may show us a path we would not have seen otherwise."

Then, hearing the clanking of Cadfael's armor walking away, he curses and hurries ahead, whispering to Mission, "Remind me to kill him when this is over - unless you've done it already..."

The priest would be the death of them all. Sa'id curses silently to himself before moving to follow Rennik and Cadfael. He is thankful to still be invisible.

Mission nods absently at Rennick. "Of course."

Cadfael had hidden with them under Sa'id's magery. He still cared for his life, then. And yet, this foolishness of barreling ahead. . . Mission could make no sense of it.

What if he was wrong about the priest? What if his promises about being able to evade Kor Goresh's minions were all lies? He drew them on into danger, with no thought, no consultation. Sand take him, Mission COULDN'T trust him.

Who was to say Cadfael knew any more of Promise than Mission?

No one, except the priest. And what good was the priest, then? His healing hands that had killed, his madness, his flippancy. . . He'd abandoned Garyth to the swamp dragon, had not even offered to heal anyone. Mission wasn't at all sure that anyone would accept help from him or his god, but that was beside the point.

Perhaps. Perhaps that WAS the point.

He'd betray them all. Promise, his companions, everyone.

Emotions warred in Mission's heart-- finally, he slipped up beside Cadfael. "A little more slowly, priest. Your armor makes such sweet music, the swamp dragons above us will sing along. If you'll stop a moment, SHH! You can hear them."

Mission will try to get Cadfael to slow down, and wait for the rest of the party again.

In case that wasn't clear. . .

I thought it was pretty clear that I was fumbling pretty slowly through the dark. Don't think I'm getting anywhere fast.
