The Belneth's Words

From: Ty

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

Rennik watches the effect of his words carefully. The Kalama tribesman who initially spoke remains impassive throughout his speech, but when he mentions the stealing of halfling souls, one of the halfling archers physically jumps. Clearly, these people are not unfamiliar with what is happening.

"Rennik of the Chorrdath, you stand on peaceground. I hear the truth of your words, and see no evil intent." When the leader says this, his hunters immediately lower their weapons. "A group of Murrkat and men pursue you, do you know this? They are only a few minutes behind. Come with me to a place were we may speak without interruption."

The halfling turns around and makes a quick gesture to his hunters, who disappear back into the forest like ghosts. The party collects their weapons and follows. The halfling allows Rennik to catch up with him and says, "I appreciate the totem gift you offer, but I am not the one who should accept it. I will take you to our chieftain, and you may offer your gift to him. I'm sure he will accept it with honor."

As the party follows the halfling through the forest, they notice a curious thing. The plants and animals of the woods around them seem to be reacting to their guide in a deferential manner. He never has to push a tree branch out of his face. Somehow, they are just never in the way. He never has to step over a root in the ground, as the roots always seem to be low enough he won't stub his toe on them. The animals in the branches above stop quietly as he passes by then scurry off to their business after he has passed.

[taking a quick break if anyone wants to say anything to this guy, I will write the next turn tonight]

Rennik walks just behind the halfling emissary, noting how the forest responded to his passing. The halfling was a Belneth, or forest friend, one of those graced by the love of Mielikki and showered with her gifts. To the best of Rennik's memory, the Kalama viewed the Belneth as the tenders of the Great Mongoose's earthly territory. The Belneth were truly sacred among the halfling peoples, deferred to in times of crisis and sought for advice and spiritual guidance. They were in tune with the world in a way that not even the most forest-dwelling ranger could be, for the trees spoke to them of ancient days and the wind brought them secrets from far off lands.

Rennik's brow furrowed as he contrasted the Belneth with the gold-maddened halfling lords of the mountain city, and he tried to purge the image from his head. Their civilization had progressed so far from those dark times, and they had regained the connection with the earth that the city lords had lost in their greed and ignorance.

But the Belneth had said their pursuers were only minutes behind.

"I thank you for your kindness and aid, Belneth of the Kalama. Though I must warn you - the men and halflings pursuing us are a small group compared to the massed forces of the Murrkat's vile god. More will follow these tainted ones, including dead forced to walk again among the living...."

He pauses, struck by the archer's reaction to his earlier words.

"...and... perhaps warriors of your own tribe, forced to serve the darkness against their will..." He swallows and sets his jaw. "If they have their way, they will enslave all of our people, and all races on this island."

The Halfling Chief

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

The druid nods at these words.

"Several of our people have been taken already. One of our scouts lost her entire family, and went searching for them. She found and followed a small warparty of Murrkat into the jungle, but was forced to turn back. We paid for our laxness will the lives of our innocent. We have not been lax since. Now our hunters scout our lands constantly, and the trees speak to me of those who pass.

"Something evil stirs at the mountain, our people are taken, the dead walk. And a Chorrdath hunter and five men come fleeing out of the jungle, with Murrkat on their heels." He turns to face you, "I am almost afraid to hear your story. And I think there may be some things you do not know yet, but it is not my place to say them."

After this, the Belneth grows silent. The party follows him for less than an hour, when small halfling dwellings are spotted in the forest. They are not elaborate, but they are clean and well cared for, and show design with an eye toward maintaining the look of the forest. Many of them are difficult to spot until you are very close because they resemble the surrounding woods so closely. Rennik breathes deeply the air of the place, taking in the smell of cooking and the sounds of his people hard at work. This village flourishes, you can see it in their good homes and fat children. Only the tense look of suspicion on the faces of the adults show the worries that have recently come to this place. Even so, Rennik feels a tug of homesickness.

The Belneth leads the group up to a longhouse. It is large, but not ostentatious, the walls being simple cut logs mortared with forest clay. The door is a flap of leather sewn into the wood at the top and left side. Your guide pushes through and enters the dwelling, gesturing for you to follow.

Inside, it is tall enough for a man to stand, though Mission's head nearly brushes the ceiling. In the center of the longhouse a fire burns in a stone pit, and a dozen or so halflings sit around it on the hard packed dirt floor. At the far end of the longhouse sits the chieftain on a wooden chair. The only sign of his position seems to be the fact that he is not sitting on the floor like the rest of the halflings in the room. He is surprisingly young, younger even than Rennik, though his face is hard and bears many scars. Near one hand he keeps a hooked short sword, and near the other a heavy club. He studies the six of you with a flat expression, then gestures to a spot on the other side of the fire, and the druid says, "You are invited to sit."

When the group has taken a seat on the ground near the fire, the chieftain looks at Rennik and says, "Our belneth was to bring you here only if you traveled under trucebond. This bond will hold as long as no lies are spoken in this room. You are under my protection and may speak freely as long as this is so. I, Nukaru, swear this. Will you speak to me under this bond?" When Rennik nods once, the chieftain continues, "If you are not here as a hunter for the Chorrdath, and you do not serve the nameless ones and their jungle god," and here he spits in the fire, "then why are you here?"

Garyth notes the suspicion and fear in the faces of the halflings as the group makes its way through the village. It's no surprise; after people started disappearing from the farms around Overlook the townspeople had been nervous, too. He tries to look as friendly as possible and continues following Rennik.

It hadn't been many days since Garyth would have chafed at following. But this was clearly Rennik's turf, and besides, they'd been through enough now that they were all equals and command is the least of his worries. So when the chieftan poses his question, Garyth waits for Rennik's response.

From: Matt

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

Rennik sits before the the fire, trying to find a way to answer Nukaru's question that would not delay them overlong. The chieftain, called Kal'tenn or "first warrior," did not have time for long stories if the Murrkat were quickly sweeping through the forest toward his village.

"First, I wish to present you with the gift of this fur, a jungle cat and enemy of the Great Mongoose, slain and skinned by my own hand and offered in the spirit of trucebond friendship. I will do my best to keep my story brief, Kal'tenn Nukaru." He speaks in the halfling tongue. "The Nameless (he spits into the fire) follow close behind, and I do not wish to keep you from battle."

It was the Kal'tenn's duty to defend his people at the fore of his warriors, rather than directing them from safety. The first warrior had to command respect at all times and lead by example, which is why most were young and badly scarred. Nukaru is typical of a tribal Kal'tenn, though his many scars mark an eventful tenure as chieftain.

"I left my home to pursue a devilboar that claimed the life of my betrothed. These men accompanied me on my quest after the beast terrorized their lands. We were attacked by the Nameless (he spits again) and by the armies of the dead, and we learned of the darkness spreading from the mountain. A Logi kinsman of mine was among the dead, his soul stolen from his body by some evil power. Following the trails back toward the mountain, we learned that a child was to be born that would provide a body for their dark god, and we took it as our quest to stop such a ritual."

"We did so by stealing the child at his very birth, which you see there, cradled by his father, the warrior Mission." He motions toward Mission and Promise. "This act angered the god and his armies, and they pursued us through the forest. The child is..." he pauses, remembering the images of his future conjured at Promise's birth. "... belneth. His eyes hold great wisdom, and his destiny will be great...." he adds for Promise's sake, "though we have had little food suitable for an infant."

"But if the Nameless (he spits) capture the child, their dark god will walk the earth in the body of a powerful belneth of great destiny."

"Fleeing the mountain, we took the shortest distance through the jungle, which brought us near to the territory of the Great Mongoose. Alone, we will be overrun and slaughtered, the child taken. We have been attacked once already and nearly lost two of our number, but we slaughtered the nameless ones who followed and their half-elf leader. Their witch escaped, flying with unholy powers through the air."

He stops, trying to find a way to phrase his next statement so as not to offend Nukaru.

"We... travel toward the stone walls of the humans, home to the warrior Garyth," he motions to the guardsman, "hoping to find safety behind the many swords of their guards. We bring death to your door, and war with the Nameless who have plagued your people. If we stay... the armies will surely destroy this village. Their numbers are that great and arrows do little against the walking corpses of the dark god."

"We need to make haste toward Overlook, and we request your aid in speeding our flight and slowing our pursuers. To stand against them would be certain death, but harrying them from the shadows and treetops could mean the difference between peace and utter destruction for the entire island. I also beg of your generosity any bowmen you could spare to travel with us."

Bad News

Mission hopes that Rennick has mentioned food for Promise in all that mash of halfling-speak. But he says nothing.

From: Ty

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

Nukaru seems surprised and genuinely pleased when offered the cat's pelt. He gets up off his chair and walks around the fire to stand before Rennik. "This gift is accepted by those who follow the Great Mongoose, and with honor." He takes the pelt from Rennik's hand, and places it over the back of his chair before sitting down again. He then listens intently to the rest of Rennik's story.

When Rennik mentions the child's lack of food, Nukaru gestures at one of his men, who slips quietly out the door.

"He speaks truth, First One," the druid says when the story is over. Nukaru nods, "Even when we fought as bitter enemies, the Chorrdath always acted with honor. I did not expect lies from one of their hunters who has given his bond." He leans forward with a smile, "I was first blooded in battle as a young man when the great Chorrdath war-chief, Tannik Whiphand, gave me this." He points to a nasty scar over his left eye. "He would not remember me, I was but one of many he defeated that day, but I will never forget him. He was lord of that battlefield, and his greatness was undeniable, even to his enemies. I had never seen anything like him before, and have not met his equal since. Ever since that day I have tried to live as I thought he might. And it was I that sent the emissaries with offers of trade and marriage to your people so that we might cement the uneasy peace we had forged."

He stands up. "I tell you this so that you know I speak as a true friend to the Chorrdath. I can spare you no warriors or hunters. We have lost too many people, and heard too many stories of entire villages wiped out. My first duty lies here, though if the nameless ones pursue the child that alone makes it my fondest wish that they never find him.

"On the morrow, I leave with half my strength to meet an equal force from the Chorrdath and Logi tribes. We will march in numbers to the edge of the jungle and set a picket through which no nameless one may pass. And we will remain there until they no longer try. If need be, we will march through the jungle itself and burn their vile villages to the ground. One way or another, we will know if their black god is stronger than the forest spirits. We will not let them take us one by one.

"But this morning I heard a disturbing report, that only now makes sense. Our Belnath reported that a large army of men and walking dead left the base of Ice Dagger (Rennik guesses Ice Dagger means Kessel) and began marching south west. We could not understand where they might be going, but I think we know now.

"They send harriers to harass your heels while you flee, but their main strength marches on Overlook, which is your destination. They intend to trap you between your pursuers and an army of undead."

Sa'id quietly translates for the group, but before everyone has finished digesting this new bit of information, several more halflings come through the doorway. A small and plump halfling woman walks over to Mission and smiles at him. She says something in her tongue, and reaches for Promise. Mission instinctively pulls the child away, but Sa'id says, "She wants to feed him, Mission." Mission slowly hands Promise over to her, and she immediately sits down and pulls open her blouse. She must have an infant of her own, because her breast is heavy, and in seconds Promise is suckling happily away while the mother halfling sings quietly to him. It is a scene of such quiet peace and domesticity, but in Mission's mind it is overlaid with memories of Promise's conception, and later of a pure white flame and a terrible scream that will echo in his head forever.

Along with the halfling woman, a small Kalama scout has come into the room, and stands quietly at the back, hand nervously playing with the hilt of a knife. "Speak," says Nukaru. "First One, our hunters have slain the Nameless ones who pursued these, though we lost many." The scout answers.

"How many? You were three times their number, and on your home ground! How could they take so many?" Nukaru asks incredulously.

"First One, the Nameless fell quickly, and did no more than wound one of us. But while we fought, great demons burst forth from the forest! When we turned to face them, black demon whips burst from the ground and began grabbing our hunters. Many fell to the whips."

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

Rennik nods gravely at Nukaru's words. They would stand and fight the armies - but at least they would have the aid of allies and the cover of the woods. He said a silent prayer to Mielikki for their victory, and for her protection in the forest.

When the scout arrived, Rennik listened intently to his words before speaking.

Kal'tenn Nukaru, if I may speak." He waits to be acknowledged.

"The demons and demon whips are the weapons of their flying devilspawn witch. The demons themselves are mere illusion, a distraction tactic meant to confuse. I saw one and believed it real, but it never engaged us in combat - it only took our eyes from the woods long enough for our enemies to launch their ambush."

"The black whips are spawned of the abyss that birthed the witch, grown from the soil itself and poisoning the forest. She flies above the trees and weaves her vile spells. Two good archers at treetop level should be able to shoot her down, or at least give her something else to worry about. If it weren't for my companion Caller Farron" he motions toward the wizard, "and the eagles that responded to his call for aid, she would have surely destroyed us as well."

He considers a moment.

"Do your scouts know any way to bypass the army in our path so we can arrive safely at Overlook?"

Aside from his translations, Sa'id remains largely quiet, unsure of speaking protocols. His thoughts whirl at the news of the army headed for Overlook, though, and finally he is unable to contain himself.

"Kal'tenn Nukaru, if I may speak," he says in the halfling tongue, waiting for acknowledgement before continuing, "...if there is an army bound for Overlook, we should consider going to Nesalin instead." He then translates quietly for the group.

Does Mission know where he might be able to get a boat back to the mainland? That's his main concern right now-- a boat means safety for him and Promise. If Overlook is the only place to find one, than that's where he'll go; but if he can find a ship in Nesalin, he'll go there and avoid the armies of darkness.

IC: Mission alternates between listening to Sa'id's translation of the halflings' discussion, and gazing at his son. Food for Promise-- things were starting to look hopeful.

It only lasts a moment-- the news from the halfling scout makes him frown. But Sa'id asks the same question of the halfling chief that Mission would have asked, so the monk continues his silence.

Nesalin is the main port city on Huss. There are other villages with boats, but they will be fishing boats and the like. Nothing that you would want to make an ocean crossing in.

Nesalin is the best bet for finding a seagoing ship.

Nukaru is about to answer Rennik when Sa'id speaks. He listens to the wizard then says, "The Kalama do not go to Nesalin. If that is your destination, so be it. But we can not aid you."

To Rennik he says, "If you travel due south, the edge of the forest is only half a day away. You can follow it west to the human road that leads to Overlook. There is little we can do for you, other than refill your water skins and food pouches. We have our own fight coming."

From behind you a voice bursts in, "First One, please may I speak!?"

Nukaru nods, and the scout who reported in moves into the circle of light from the fire. With the hood down, and no longer in shadows, it is possible to see that the scout is a female. Her face is broad and plain, and her eyes angry. She still plays with the hilt of a knife in her belt. "Chorrdath. You have seen the nameless black god, you have seen what they do to those they take?"

Women as scouts and hunters within the tribes are not unknown, but they are rare. Only those women too fierce for marriage and motherhood take to the hard life of a fighter. Rennik decides not to be offended at her sharp tone, and says, "I have."

"And there is no hope? They have their spirits taken, as your kinsman did?"

Rennik nods. "They do. There is no hope but the death of their god and his vile servants."

The scout wheels around to Nukaru. "Then I demand blood for my loss! You must release me to my own hunt! I must have blood in payment for blood."

The tears running down her cheeks are the only sign of the terrible pain that motivates this brash speech. Rennik sees them and remembers his own berserker rage after the loss of his betrothed, and how he felt only blood could ease that pain.

Nukaru does not argue with her. He just says, "Melani, you are released from service to me. We will miss your eyes in the fight to come, but you must hunt your own prey. Mongoose guide you, little one."

She nods at this, and turns back to Rennik. Clearly, she has taken him to be the leader of the group. "I will guide you through the forest, and past the armies of the nameless. For a half score years I have scouted the forests of this island, and for the last three I have been First Scout. No one knows these lands better than I. If taking this child away hurts the black one, then I will spend my last breath on the task. I would use the last drop of my blood to quench the fires at his black heart, were power given me to do so. Will you accept my bow and my knife, in service of this child the black one fears?"

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

How close were they to the edge of the forest?

Mission keeps quiet still, but his mind is awhir. The army from Kessel. . . how long would it take them to reach the edge of the forest? They'd have to move through the forest-- that couldn't be that easy, could it?

How much time did he have to get Promise to a boat?

There's the crux of everything. Getting Promise off of Huss. Farron had said that he could summon a horse-- Mission had never ridden one. Blood and stone, he'd RUN if he had to, to Nesalin.

Not Overlook. He would not allow his son to be trapped in a siege. At Nesalin, he could hire out on a boat, like he'd done to get here. A boat to get back to the mainland, and from there to Bannock's Ire.

Mission stays quiet, idly stroking Promise's leg. He'd talk his plan over with Garyth and the others later.

From: Scott

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

Then again. . .

Mission lays his hand on Sa'id's shoulder. "Overlook is a small city, Sa'id. Why would. . . his army go there? Nesalin has the wizard's college."

And the port. They had to reach Nesalin before the army if Promise was to have any hope of getting off of Huss.

It is all he can do to keep from snatching Promise away from the halfling nurse and starting off right now.

Then the halfling woman steps forward, and Mission can barely hear her offer of help. Yes, whatever, let's get moving! he wants to shout. A half-day's journey to open lands; another day or two's journey to the cities. . .

Calm. Patience and caution. The Path would turn as it willed. Promise's eyes are on him, even as he continues to nurse. Mission takes a deep breath. Wisdom would decide the Path, not haste.

He turns to the halfling woman. "I appreciate your offer for help, very much." He pauses for a moment, feeling silly and rather large and clumsy amongst this company. "Um. . . and I accept."

She waits for the Chorrdath's answer. As she does she surveys the others in the group. Three of them are look like scribes. Two of them have the soft hands of scholars and the robes of merchants. Useless in a fight. The one with the baby is a mystery. He carries himself like a fighter, but has neither armor or weapons. He has a baby in the forest. An enigma. The big one with the shield is also strange. He carries weapons like a warrior and a shield like a warrior, yet wears no armor.

The other human and the halfling are less of a mystery. The man is obviously a guardsman, though his armor and weapons seem much abused. The halfling is a wild looking creature, obvioulsy used to the wild. He might be good in a fight. With all these big people around, she might find it easy to get behind an enemy and strike them when they were least expecting in. Nothing surprises someone like an arrow coming out of nowhere and pinning them to a tree.

Leader? Rennik supresses a chuckle. For a time, perhaps, but outside the forest in the twisting streets of a human city, he would look much like Caller Farron did in the jungle. Yet, only a week ago, he struggled for dominance over this group... and now?

They had looked to him for days, trusting his judgement, allowing him to fall into the role of leader. True to their word before the dangers were even known, they fell behind when in the wilds - as best as could be expected. And he, in turn, would fall behind Garyth once the walls of Overlook, or any other human city, were rising unnaturally around them.

"Reth'tenn Melani, you do us great honor by offering your skills in our time of need. Tales of Kalama scouts are legend among my people from the wars between our tribes."

He pauses, not sure how to continue, but forges ahead. In the lands of the halfling, he is leader, and this was no time to cause doubt in the mind of a skilled scout and bowmaiden or confuse the assembly with talk of shared leadership.

"I accept you into our company, Reth'tenn, and hope that your bow and eyes can guide us safely away from our pursuers." He grasps her left forearm near the elbow with his left hand in a firm full-forearm grip, a cementing of the bond between warriors.

"But time is against us, and we must make haste." He bows low to the Nukaru and requests permission to leave. "Kal'tenn, we humbly apologize for distracting you from your duties and beg leave to get the child to safety."

From: Dan

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

OOC: Been a while since I've written anything. So here are some random snippets of Cadfael's thoughts since hitting the village:

IC: It is a strange thing, that a simple forest could feel so spiritual. Almost unconsciously Cadfael feels himself reaching out to the forest Gods, trying to understand the connection. The forest would not exist without the power of the sun, how do these halflings fit Pelor's Grace into their picture of the heavens? What remnants of their old religion do they keep? Even after all these years it is unlikely that something so integral to a society could have been lost forever, even if twisted into a form that is now unrecognizable. He is almost tempted to ask, but thinks better of it and holds his peace. They, more like than not, would not know of what he spoke. With a smile he realizes that this must be what it is like inside Sa'id's head, an endless stream of questions and ever having to decide and when and which to ask.

But still, there is quaintness in the homes and freedom in the families that is strangely invigorating. In his craving for idealism the creases of worry slip unnoticed past Cadfael's eyes and he sees only families living the same life they did yesterday, and the day before that. Untouched by a world even more cruel and uncaring than Mother Nature herself. Untouched and unmanipulated toward her ends?

Though he understands not a word that passes between Rennik and the Chieftain Cadfael can well imagine the words that are being exchanged. Who are you? How have you come to be here? Which story, he wonders, is Rennik telling? The story of Rennik's abandoning the group, of his own madness and visions, of their all being no more than pawns for greater powers? No, his is more likely the story of warriors and heroes thumbing their noses at dark gods and emerging the victors. The story of man's heroics where the actions of men had so little to do with the outcome. Their path was set down by the Gods and they walked it using the feet the Gods had given them. It is small wonder the world is so confused, so long as it denies what it is.

This pause does, however, give him a moment's peace to look over the wounds of the group. Though he does not go to them he makes note of how they are carrying themselves. Any pains strong enough to show through their postures should be seen to before they leave. (OOC: Anyone still grievously wounded, Ty?)

His concentration being elsewhere it takes him a moment to realize that this plucky halfling intends to leave with them. It only fully settles in when she thrusts her pack up at him. Holding back his smile may be the hardest thing he has had to do since leaving Overlook a week ago. It is only the sobering realization that not even Promise is as innocent as this woman that keeps the smile off his face. The poor girl does not realize what she has walked into. None of the group does, in truth. The Drinker of Souls is no more than a few words and a sense of fear and loss. The urge to tweak the girl's nose is gone and Cadfael sinks into the familiar unconscious scratching of his left hand.

How far we have come, that none speak of the fates of these halflings nor the imminent overrunning of Overlook. Sacrifices are becoming second nature. Perhaps the others understand more than he cares to consider.

"It is past time to leave, Brothers. Nesalin or Overlook, both paths start in the same direction. The finer points may be worked out on the road."

Subject: Re: The Chase; Out of the jungle and into the woods

Rennik smirks behind Melani's back at her gesture to Cadfael. He he appeared this way when the humans first met him? Brash and overconfident in his abilities, ordering them this way and that? They had seemed so soft and inexperienced, the worst he could have hoped for when they set out.

He had expected rangers and seasoned woodsmen, not this ragtag band of city dwellers. Yet, they had acquited themselves, for the most part. Certainly the monk and the guardsman, and even Farron, who had not revealed his knack as a Caller until days into the woods. The priest was still a mystery, and Rennik did not yet entirely trust him... and the spellweaver returned from the gates of death was another matter entirely. He tried to avoid Sa'id's gaze and block out the fact that the deathweaver knew so much of his own language and people.

Melani was right in her assessment, and Rennik had come far from his gut feelings to become... compromising. He had drawn more on his experiences with the elves lately, rather than his roots as a halfling warrior of the Chorrdath. Perhaps that is why the scout party caught them, because he didn't listen to his instincts to keep moving through the night.

His smirk at Melani turns to a scowl, and then a growl.

"You are no one to order these men about, Reth'tenn." The edge in his voice makes it known to all those present that Rennik has taken Melani's order as an open affront to his leadership. "For now, that is my place, and you would do well to remember that."

Let her establish her rank in the pack on her own time, not under the current alpha's nose. She should have better sense - and Rennik sees now why the Kal'tenn let her go without much argument.

"We make for the Nesalin port, Reth'tenn. I trust your skill can speed us through your territory and away from our enemies."

She goes to the clearing to await the party. She did leave her pack with Cadfael.

Farron has remained silent ever since entering the halfling village. He is ever so glad of a moment to rest, and the feeling of security (even if a false sense) of being among allies is an amazing relief after the events of the past days. He looks surprised when the scout reveals herself to be a woman, but after having followed Rennik through the jungle these past days, he is happy to have a second member of the group with wilderness knowledge.

He will follow wherever the group decides to go.

Nukaru is as good as his word. As soon as the group has left the longhouse, halflings are there to restock their food supplies and water skins. A gruff old halfling man even hands Rennik a skin of harsh halfling beer, saying only, "For the road, hunter," and then winking before he stalks off.

Mission tries to barter his good for milk and a carrying sling, but the halfling women just smile and shake their heads, and then load him down with milk skins, a finely made sling for promise, and a bundle of wraps and shirts for the boy. Their cheerful generosity finally breaks his reserve, and his eyes are watery as he thanks each and every one of them. He hands his hammer and pitons to one of their men, and says, "A gift, as thanks to your people." The man smiles and takes the items gratefully enough. It seems that there is a culture of gift giving here, that is very different from that of humans. Gifts are given and received openly, with no apparent expectation of needing to pay back the value. And so Promise will travel the last leg of his journey to Nesalin with warm clothes and fresh wraps for his backside, and a full stomach from the milk skins. Stone guard your path, he thinks quietly.

Once everyone has finished re-supplying themselves, they gather to head south again. Nukaru grips Rennik by the forearm once and says, "If we both live, I would like for you to come sit by my fire and tell me this tale. Forest guide your path, warrior." Then he turns and accompanies his captains back into the longhouse, no doubt to finalize plans for the war that begins tomorrow.

Melani rejoins the party a few hundred yards from the village, and heads off at a very brisk pace through the woods. She does seem to know her way, and the party is able to make excellent time following the path she chooses. Rennik is particularly impressed by her ability to move at a swift pace without making a sound. Even ten feet behind her, his sharp halfling ears almost never pick up the sound of her footsteps. She must indeed be a good scout. If she chose to move carefully, she would be a ghost.

Just after noon, the party reaches the edge of the woods. For the first time in days, they stand in the open with the sun shining down on them. Rennik and Melani don't seem to notice, but for those not raised in deep forest, there is a subtle claustrophobia that sets in when there is never an open look at the sky. Farron says, "I believe I can even smell the ocean from here." There is a look approaching bliss on his face.

Melani scowls and says, "We will not go to the ocean. If we intend to miss Overlook, then we must travel inland and stay close to the forest." Farron turns to her as if to explain, then sees Sa'id grinning at him. He just shrugs and says, "Even as you say, scout."

After a quick lunch on the food the halflings gave, the group heads off west along the forest rim. Again, Melani sets a hard pace, but seems to always find the easiest route. She does indeed seem to know this area as well as she boasted. By nightfall, the party has made excellent progress. Melani stops near a small stream coming out of the woods and says, "This is a good place to stop for the night." She looks to Rennik for approval, and he nods. She then tells the group, "We will pass by the road to Overlook late the day after tomorrow. We don't know where the nameless army is, so we will have to be careful then. But tomorrow we should be able to move very quickly."

[stopping for the night. Check in please, or converse if you wish.]

Ok I am a bit new at this.

Can we assume that Cadfael will heal any who need it before we sleep?

Do we want the three spell casters to try and get a good nights sleep, for a change? I think that with Melani, Rennik, Garyth and Mission we would have enough people to stand watch, maybe even a couple at a time.

How much of the back story would Melani know by now? Most of it?

Sorry if I am asking a bunch of questions, but I don't want you all to die now. :)

Rennik grips Nukaru's arm.

"Thank you, Kal'tenn, for your kindness in this dark time. May you fight as the Great Mongoose against the snake coiled around the heart of this island. If I can, I will return to fight by your side against the darkness. We will sing tales of victory and drink to the passing of friends gone."

He watches Nukaru stride off and take command of his people, admiring his force of will.

Following Melani through the forest, Rennik understands how she became Reth'tenn of her tribe. She was incredibly skilled in the wilds, and likely just as good with her bow. At close range, she wouldn't last long, but he imagines her arrows could hold her attackers at bay well enough.

When they stop to eat, Rennik marks that they have made remarkable time. At this rate, they should be safe at Nesalin well before the minions of the dark god could catch them. And after that...? Rennik had done his part, taking them through the wilderness to safety. He had risked his life to save a child he didn't know, and if they made it to Nesalin, his task was complete.

His place was in the forest, fighting the armies of the dark god and defending his people. His place was inflicting vengeance upon those who steal the souls of his kinsmen and tribesmen. His place was destroying the devilboar responsible for the death of his bethrothed and his best friend, striking yet another blow against the forces of darkness.

The more he thought about it as he walked, the more he considered Nesalin an end to his fellowship with these humans, and a time to resume the struggles of his people. Perhaps this Melani would feel the same, and they could strike together against the leaders of the dark forces... the red haired shebitch, the devilspawn witch, the Brute, and the others. Without their captains, there would be disorder... perhaps...

Once they have settled down, Rennik will address Melani.

"You are more than skilled, Reth'tenn. You are gifted with the agility of the Great Mongoose and the grace of Mielikki..." He inclines his head toward her. "But there is a fire in you. I see flickers in your eyes that I have only ever seen in my own reflection in still waters. You have lost much, and the burning need for vengeance threatens to consume you."

"If it is not too painful, would you speak of this? What made you abandon your home and your tribe to guide a warrior of the Chorrdath and a band of humans away from your home while your kinfolk are under threat? If you do not wish to speak of this, I will tell you of my own pain and driving fire, so that you know the burden you share is not yours alone."

D'oh! Meant to reply to the other one. Now the reply line is all screwy.

As for Cadfael, he hasn't touched Rennik since he roasted Garth.

As for the spellcasters, Rennik don't know squat about their needs. He assumes Farron's calling is a gift, though he doesn't understand his other powers. He still thinks Sa'id is a walking dead man, so that's a whole other issue. Them getting enough rest is the farthest thing from his mind.

As for back story, I'd assume you'd know everything Rennik told Nukaru, and whatever your own backstory is. Rennik certainly hasn't divulged anything else yet, no one else has responded about camp chatter. So, pretty much in the dark, I'd imagine.

We've typically been doing a three-person rotation for the watch: Rennik, Mission, and Garyth, in no particular order. When they did not return on time, I went out to find them. I never did find them, but I found where they had been attacked." She holds up her short bow. 'This was his hunting bow. It has been in our family for generations. The spirits of our ancestors are in it. He would never abandon it. I found it laying on the ground amid signs of a large fight. No bodies were found, either of the hunting party or those who attacked. However I found crude weapons and other items that were not of the Kalama or the Logi or the Chorrdath. They were of no group I have ever met. When I reported to the elders what I found, they said that the hunting party must have been ambushed by some unknown group."

"My hope was that my brother was still alive. Now with the story you have told me I know he is dead. Or at least I hope he is. I fear he may be worse than dead. If somehow I can help you in your quest, somehow maybe I can free the spirit of my brother." At this point, Melani stops talking for while, staring into the night.

He is quiet and distant during the goodbyes with the halfings, despite being able to speak and understand their language. It is not long after they set out before he arranges to find himself walking near Cadfael. At first he walks silently by the priest, then begins to speak quietly as they approach what is to become their camp:

"Brother Cadfael, I..." he pauses briefly as Rennik and the others begin to bustle about setting up camp. "...was I dead?" Then, he blurts: "Wait. I'm not even sure I wish to know the answer. But I... I cannot deny that it was the power of your god that has granted me this reprieve." He stays close to the priest as camp is set and a fire is started. Mission feels like for the first time in months, he can finally stand up straight. As they make camp, he stretches his long arms, his long legs, his lower back, his shoulders. . . every one of his muscles thanks him. No more skulking in the shadows of the jungle.

He grins to himself. No, now they could skulk in the open plains.

The moment is too much for him. Days in shadow, in Shadow and Sand, now to feel the full sun! Mission removes his shirt to feel the touch of the afternoon light on his tatoos. No wonder Cadfael worshipped a sun god. Here, among all this warmth, Mission could see how someone could devote his life to the god that supposedly provided it.

Promise is quiet and still. As ever. Calmness and peace. Mission digs a finger into the boy's ribs and is rewarded with a little smile. Not much of one. But something. "You take after your grandfather. My father," Mission says. He'd never known Penance's parents-- Penance had been old when she became Anileth. Her mother and father were dead.

Blue eyes, just barely able to focus on Mission's mouth. Did the words mean anything to Promise? Did the Kaishin-child inherently understand more than normal children? Mission settles himself down to feed and clean Promise. What was normal? He'd ask Garyth. Garyth had mentioned he had lots of brothers and sisters, hadn't he?

But by the time he is done with Promise, his mood has slipped on to matters of survival. Melani had said they'd cross the road to Overlook late tomorrow. It had taken them one day to march from Overlook to the halfling's camp just inside the forest; another to get to Gully's Outpost; another to get to the tower in the woods; yet another to get to the tunnel; and still another to get to Mount Kessel. Five days? That was all? Mission rubs his eyes. Surely he was forgetting a month or two somewhere. At any rate, all that travelling had been done on a road. A road that their enemies would surely utilize.

What if the army was just sitting there on the road to Overlook, waiting for them? How could seven people and a small baby and a wolf possibly get by them?

Did Kor Garesh's army need to sleep? Who was to say that they wouldn't march all night? Mission doubts that the undead needed to sleep, but their handlers would. Would they stop in the jungle to camp, like a regular army might, or would they just keep marching?

This time, he couldn't keep his anxiouness to himself. He hefts Promise into his arms, and approaches the others. "Nukaru said that his scouts had reported Kor Garesh's army just this morning. I don't think they could have made it out of the jungle by now-- it took us a full two days, and we move pretty quickly. But the undead don't need to sleep. They could march all night, and the full force of the army could be on the road to Overlook at the same time that we get there tomorrow evening."

Mission bites his lip. "I think we should shorten our camp time. Instead of three watches of four hours each, we should just take two, and leave camp as soon as Melani can see well enough to guide us. I will take one of the watches." He trails off, waiting for their response.

Rennik listens to Melani's tale with a grim look upon his face. He had been long from home. How many of his kin had been taken in that way? His cousins? His oath brothers?

"I did not know of these horrors. I fear for my own people, for I have not returned to my tribe in many, many moons."

"I had been betrothed the daughter of our Belneth, a vision of Mielikki herself. My cousins and oath brothers attended the binding ceremony, bringing gifts of rich hides and H'ruggda quills. During the ceremony, a devilboar struck from the woods into the heart of the gathering. We ran for weapons, but..."

He swallows, not wishing to relive the pain.

"She was tossed like a child's doll and fell like a dead branch. I will never forget the sound she made as she hit the earth. But the devilboar merely turned on its next victim, crushing her under its hoof as it bit my closest friend."

"She was not yet in the ground when the madness took him and he killed those tending his wounds and fled into the forest."

He tightens his jaw and swallows again, fighting to keep his voice steady.

"He is dead now, his soul released from the boar's curse by my own axe, but the devil that spawned him still stialks these woods, in the service of those that pursue us. Perhaps Mielikki will grant my wish of vengeance, but for now I have other duties."

Discussion cut short by the need to sleep and establish watch order, Rennik listens to the suggestions of the others. Mission was right that they should shorten watch and press on as quickly as possible, and Melani had a point about paired watches. Garyth had seen the witch by pure luck, but had missed the ambush creeping up around them. An extra set of eyes could go a long way.

At Mission's final comment, Rennik can't help but grin.

"You forget those times when the army of darkness was before us.. and when it was on all sides. But, yes, mostly it has been on our heels these past nights."

After a chuckle, he steadies his voice again.

"But the Reth'tenn is wise in her suggestion, Friend Mission. We are one more now, and have an extra pair of trained eyes and ears. If there is any chance that your son draws our enemies toward us, the more eyes the better."

"We shall camp under the trees of the forest rim to be out of sight from above and from across open field, and either Reth'tenn Melani or I will will keep treetop watch with bow ready in case the devilspawn witch shows herself." And after a pause, "she has much to answer for..."

Subject: The Chase; Quiet Night and Quiet Day

The night passes uneventfully.

Garyth and Melani sit the first watch, though Melani spends it hidden high up in one of the trees as the forest edge. Garyth had hoped to have a minute or two to talk to the halfling, get to know her better. She acted so much like Rennik had at first, but now Garyth felt like he and Rennik were almost friends. He hoped Melani would make that transition as well, but it would be harder if she distanced herself from them.

Melani, for her part, keeps a watchful eye on the sky above the camp. No witches appear, leaving her somewhat disappointed. Using her beloved brother's bow to riddle a hellspawn spellweaver with arrows would be very satisfying. She had shot several of the Murrkat during yesterday's ambush, but rather than appease her anger and thirst for blood, it had only whetted it.

Mission has trouble sleeping, so close to his goal. It is possible that in two days, he may be boarding a ship for home. Back to Bannock's Ire, and with his son in his arms. What will it be like to place his son on the mossground? What had his father felt? What would Rigor say when he saw the boy? When he discovered that his grandson was Kaishin, that his line had produced the next speaker for the path? Suddenly, he wants that moment more than any other in his life. He wants to lay his son on the mossground, and see his father's face. Each moment between this one and that is an intolerable eternity. Then Promise, lying on his father's chest, sighs quietly in his sleep. Mission is able to relax. This moment has its own sweetness too.

A few hours pass, and Mission and Rennik take their turn at watch, with Rennik replacing Melani in the tree. Their watch too passes quietly. At dawn, Cadfael arises and begins his prayers. There is something comforting in seeing the priest return to his gentle routine. It seems to say that the madness of the last ten days is behind. Even if it is only an illusion, it is a pleasant one. Sa'id, too, rises with the priest, and follows Cadfael's direction in giving his thanks to Pelor for his life. For Rennik, that is a less heartening scene. It is the natural order of things that people die and return to the cycle. It seems that gods who raise the fallen are violating the laws that they themselves set in place. It is difficult to understand.

After a quick meal, the group moves out, again following Melani's expert lead. Swift progress is made along the forest rim, and by the time the sun has begun to set, the forest edge is moving off to the north. Melani climbs a small hill, and calls Rennik up to her. "Look down there. Do you see? The man road." A few miles away, and down the gentle slope toward the coast, Rennik can see the north-south inland road that joins the human towns of Kantuk and Landfall. He can also see the junction with the westward road to Nesalin. Melani has led them to exactly the right spot for a rapid march into Nesalin. They would be able to stay on the road the entire way, and not come closer than 20 or 30 miles of Overlook. Rennik nods, "Well done, Reth'tenn. Well done."

But he also knows this is the most dangerous night. They are in exactly the place the undead army would exit the woods if they were marching on Overlook. It will be important to find a good hiding spot for the night, and their watches must be extra diligent. He doesn't think the army could march through the jungle and dense forest as quickly as his group traveled through the plains, but they may have sent faster moving scouts ahead. Best to be careful.

[waiting for checkin or convo or whatever.]

Subject: Thoughts while travelling

IC: As they travelled Melani realizes that these humans are not quite as soft as she had thought. They knew nothing of the woods or the ways of the woods, but the followed her instructions with out hesitation when told to watch out for some danger. They did not complain about the pace. They did not complain about the conditions, even thought the weather was fair. If it was not for the looming army they were bound to run into, this might almost be fun.

Suddenly the death of her brother crashes down on her again. He and she and made many trips like this in years past. Narthan had used these trips to develope her skills. He would make a game out of having her move in the forest with out his hearing her or seeing her. This had been so much fun. He would make moving targets between the trees for her to shot and sling at until she could hit a bird 10 times out of 10. He showed her how to hide her knives so that people could not see them but so that she could draw them in an instant. Those were the best days.

Then the darkness came. Those damned elders who were living in the past. She was sure that the Nameless were back but they just wanted to live like they had. It had cost her brother her life. The elders did not want to know what was happening in the world. True the world could be a scary place, with lots of strange people and strange ways, but that is what made life interesting. Take these humans. So different then her, yet there was the one scribe, the one with the baby, doing exactly the same things she had seen her brother do with his young ones. Maybe they were not so different. Just bigger.

Cadfael doesn't have anything else to add. He does, however, only have one more midterm. Huzzah!

Sa'id is groggy when Cadfael wakes him at sunrise, but hauls himself up without complaint. The priest quietly instructs him in the proper prayers, and Sa'id finds it surprisingly like memorizing his spells in that he is able to relax and not think, directly, about anything in particular.

The sun peers over the horizon, suffusing the sky in an amber glow. Sa'id kneels, turns to face the sun, and all of a sudden his forehead is pressed to the ground, just as his father on faraway Ammar would do during his morning prayers to Pelor. It was not done on Huss, and Cadfael was not doing it, but it seemed... appropriate. "I might even be able to forgive you," he catches himself thinking, though he is conscious of his own arrogance in presuming he might forgive a god.

The sun is now looming over where Sa'id imagines he can see faraway Nesalin on the coast. Lifting himself into the prayer position that Cadfael has shown him, he murmers the words that he memorized before sunrise. Looking at the red warmth spreading across the sky, however, reminds Sa'id of the halfling in the ambush, the small one's screams as Sa'id's fire burned him alive. The sun's fire warmed, but could also burn, as Cadfael had burned Garth in the ruined tower. During the ambush Sa'id had felt driven to burn, to kill... and yet when he had killed it had left him unsatisfied. Did this mean that it wasn't what he really wanted... or did it mean that he wanted... more?

And had he been dead? Yesterday he had rescinded the question immediately after asking it, but it gnawed at him. If he had been dead shouldn't he have had at least a taste of the afterlife?

Discomfited somewhat, but feeling much better than yesterday, Sa'id finishes his prayers and rises to rejoin the group for breakfast. He is, again, quiet and withdrawn for the duration of the day's trek. This time at dinner he sits beside Farron. It is a long time before he speaks, but when he does so his tone is quiet and private. "My friend," he says, "I... in the ambush... was I *killed* or just *wounded*?"

"They move by night as well as they do by day. It is possible that they may emerge from the forest before sunrise - I have no idea how fast an army of walking corpses can move. They do not tire. Perhaps their masters need to rest, but they could just as easily sleep while carried by their servants so the army need not stop at all."

"They will likely have scouts out, but not trackers. The army is not pursuing us, instead moving to block our way to Overlook - which they still may do. The scouts would be to keep an eye for larger forces, such as a defense by the humans from Overlook itself. While one could very easily stumble upon our trail or our camp, I don't think that would be his first duty."

"We should make camp in a difficult location, somewhere that no army could pass through without cutting down trees or blasting rock. These would be the things a scout would note and bring back to his master as places to avoid, to steer to the left or right of to keep the force from slowing down. But that is exactly where we need to camp."

With that, Rennik will try to find some patch of impassable ground - perhaps a group of large rocks, or a steep hillock, or maybe a really tight copse of trees. Somewhere that would be avoided by a large army, and even a little uncomfortable for the party to camp at.

"I don't think we should lay any alarms, though. A scout could easily pass close by us without seeing or inspecting for a camp, focused instead on finding a good trail for the army. An alarm would alert him to our presence, as much as it would alert us to his. As would traps."

"I will take first watch and spend some time covering our trail and erasing signs of our presence here. We should then watch from a tree for the witch and the army."
