Wraiths: Round 2 Actions; Archers: Round 1 Actions

From: Karl

Subject: Re: Two wizards out of town; the wrath of Elise 1

Farron moves away from the wraith closing in on him, toward his two companions (unless that will provoke an AOO). He sees that Sa'id's attack does some damage to the wraith coming at him as does Kasen's. Briefly he considers whether it would be better for each of them to attack their own wraiths, or to try and take one out of the picture together. He decides on the latter and casts Magic Missile at the wraith Kasen first hit.

(ooc -- does the "haste" give Farron anything extra here? Can he move further then cast? Or can he cast at the wraith attacking Kasen, then use his staff against the wraith that will most likely be attacking him?

Some things I forgot:

Dodge point on the halfling I'm attacking. (Don't forget to declare your own Dodge, if you've got it!)

For now, I'm attacking from horseback.

Jake, did you send in an action, and I just missed it?

Mike, Pensive can foot it better than Garyth-- we'll have to work out a way to get you his horse.

:excited:

A battle! Huzzah!

Thanks, Scott!

Garyth's Dodge point on the halfling he is attacking.

OOC: Sorry for the delay in responding guys.

IC: Osred curses as he sees the light bloom on his captain's mount. There would be more attacks like that, he was certain. The captain was lucky he hadn't been hit by the vial himself.

He wheels his mount about, and charges directly for the halfling nearest him, readying his longsword. [OOC: if he's able to he'll attack with the longsword this round. If not, next round. Out of curiosity, given that he only has two ranks in ride, would he have better luck attacking from the saddle with his sword, or with riding down and trampling any halfling he sees (while remaining in the saddle, of course)?]

From: Ty

Subject: Re: Two wizards out of town; the wrath of Elise 1

Farron gets bonuses to AC and to hit, he can move farther during his move phase of each round, and in a full attack (attack with no move), he gets an extra attack.

Subject: Re: Two wizards out of town; the wrath of Elise 1

The night blossoms into flame, and Sa'id's scream is choked into a cough by the sudden absence of oxygen from the air. He blinks -- even with a hand over his shut eyes, the explosion's green afterimage makes it hard to see the wraith.

The wraiths. Wraiths? There are three of them now, but moving... slowly?

...Haste.

Sa'id takes a tentative breath. The air is acrid. Very well, Elise, he thinks, let us see whose mastery of the necromantic arts is greater. Turning to face an uninjured wraith, he murmurs the words of a spell [Halt Undead].

Quick Questions

From: Ty

Subject: Karl, a quick question

Karl, if Farron will take an AOO by casting his magic missile spell, will he risk it anyway?

From: Karl

Subject: Re: Karl, a quick question

Well, my better judgement says "no", but in "reality" what is Farron's option other than to run? He would be loath to run while the other two are engaging the wraiths.

Can he skip the spell and get an attack with his staff? (Actually wouldn't he get to hit twice with his staff if he skipped the spell?)

I'm leaving now and won't get your answer for another hour or so, so why don't you just make Farron realize he can't take the time for the spell without leaving himself open so he decides to use his staff (as many times as he can this round).

From: Mark

Subject: Re: Karl, a quick question

Sure hope it is a magic staff.

Mark

From: Karl

Subject: Re: Karl, a quick question

Actually, that's a good question. If Farron has any reason to think the staff would be mostly useless against a wraith, at this point he'd probably withdraw toward his companions.

If he does a full out run, could he put enough distance to get off a spell next round? Is he already too close to the wraith that anything but a withdraw will provoke an AOO?

I'm hopelessly ignorant about these kinds of details. I hate it when my character is supposed to know more than I do.

Is the shield an area protection or personal. That is, can Farron move closer to Sa'id to give him some benefit of the shield (next turn, for instance) or does it not work like that.

Subject: Two wizards out of town; the wrath of Elise 2

[Initiative rolls Kasen 21, Wraith3 17, Wraith2 15, Farron 9, Wraith1 8, Sa'id 5]

Kasen uses his knees to hold Storm steady. The wraith was a glowing cloud practically right on top of him, and he could feel the charger shivering and quaking. When the wraith has gotten too close to dodge his attacks, he yells out "Helm!" and swings Truth in a huge arc that pulls his elbows taut with a snap. [Full attack; ethereal creature 2%, 39%; attack 21, hit; attack 25, hit; Damage 13, 19] The blade whips through the wraith, nearly cutting it in two. As it passes out the other side, Kasen reverses its direction with a huge effort, and yanks the blade back through the creature's ghostly face. There is a terrible screech, and then the wraith seems to come apart like a cloud in high wind; shreds of its essence falling to the ground slowly.

Farron continues backing his horse up as the wraith moves inexorably toward him, but he stops when he realizes that he will get tangled up with Kasen's mount if he moves any further. The wraith opens its mouth in a horrible grin as it reaches out to him with its claws. [Attack 18 vs AC14, hit; Damage 3; Saving throw 8 vs DC14; failed; Damage 4 Con] Farron raises his staff to ward away the groping wraith, but its claws reach right through and pass through his shoulder. There is a sudden icy cold, and the shoulder cramps up with terrible pain. Farron can feel the essence stolen from him. It leaves him shivering and sluggish.

The other wraith lunges as Sa'id. [Attack 15 vs AC16, miss] Its claws would have struck him, but his hasted reflexes were able to move just fast enough to dodge them. "Thank you, Farron," he says under his breath.

Farron tries to shake off the mind numbing cold spreading through his body long enough to fight back. He swivels his head and sees Kasen destroy the wraith that's attacking him. No need to cast spells to help the big fighter. Farron himself was the one that needed help. The wraith continues to close with him, making Farron feel claustrophobic. He raises his staff and speaks one word of power, raising the staff's shield spell [free action]. But the wraith is too close for spells. He thrusts one end of the staff at it, trying to push it away. [full attack; ethereal form 7%, 74% miss; Attack 8, miss] His first panicked thrust misses, as the wraith dodges fluidly to one side. His second attack is a wide swing, impossible to dodge. But when the staff moves through the wraith, the creature seems to fade completely away, then reappear when the swing has ended.

Sa'id yanks the reins of his horse, backing it up several feet, giving himself room to cast. From a pocket in his robe he pulls out garlic mixed with sulfur, and hurls it at the approaching wraith. In his mind flashes a memory of this spell grasping at Anileth, and then her powerful will shattering it like glass. He forces such thoughts away, and continues speaking the words of power. The wraith hurls itself at him while he is casting and vulnerable. [AOO; Attack 18 vs AC16, hit; Damage 4; Saving throw 3 vs DC 14; failed; 1 Con damage] Sa'id, unable to move quickly while performing the complicated gestures of his spell, can not dodge this time. The Wraith's claws move through him like vapor, leaving a trail of bitter cold in their wake. [Concentration attempt 14 vs DC 14, success] Sa'id begins to stumble over the words of the spell, the deadly cold in his chest leaving him breathless, but his hatred for Elise, and his burning anger add fire to his already powerful will. He shrugs aside the pain, and completes the spell. [Halt Undead; Will save 17 vs DC 18; success] The Wraith is just moving forward for another attack when it suddenly freezes. Not even the wind moves its ghostly form.

Subject: Melani goes it alone; Not a good night for adventurers

Melani slips away from the camp, her mind occupied with thoughts of how to approach the Belneth with her requests. But her feet work their magic even without thought, and she moves like a ghost from shadow to shadow. Some things are deeper than thought. Some things live in the bone and the muscle. For Melani, traveling without sound is one of these things. Her mind never notices the dry twig even as she steps around it. And though all her thought is on the Kal'Tenn, and whether he would agree to house a thousand hungry humans, still she moves from tree to tree in a zig zagging pattern, breaking up her movements so that to the casual eye they will seem like the random movements of the forest.

It is this unconscious craft that saves her life.

One moment she is jogging through the thin outer rim of the forest, and then next she is lying flat on her stomach, holding her breath. Some inner voice has cried out "danger"! It was a voice that no wild thing of the forest ever ignored. She lies flat, opening her eyes and ears to the forest around her, desperately scanning for what caused her sudden fear. Wait. Don't breath. Let the forest tell you what your guts already know.

There, a dim light. Under the black clouds above, and with no moon or stars, the forest should be black as pitch. But off to the southeast, a light so faint as to be almost unnoticeable. And now that she sees it, maybe she hears the distant sound of voices as well?

From: Mark

Subject: Re: Melani goes it alone; Not a good night for adventurers

Melani touches her brothers bow. "Brother, thank you for your training. Now lets see who or what this is."

With that she will move off toward the light and the sound.

OOC: She will move at 10, which is the fastest she can move, I think, and still get her full move silent and hide scores. The light is to the SE. She was heading NW correct? The townsfolk are in what direction?

Mark

From: Ty

Subject: Re: Melani goes it alone; Not a good night for adventurers

OODM: The town is almost directly behind her. She was moving northeast, not northwest. The light is off to the right of her path.

IDM:

Melani slips slowly and silently through the low brush and sparse trees of the forest rim. It takes her a long time to move within sight of the light, but she moves with the patience of a hunter. If you get impatient and scare the game, no one eats.

After ten minutes or so of careful approach, she is able to see the light, and those around it. It is a small party of Halflings, probably Murrkat from their poor dress, though too far away to be sure. The light comes from a torch held by of them, as they examine something on the ground at their feet. With them is the witch. Melani counts. 7, no 8 halflings. Armed with Halfling longbows and short swords. There is no way she could take that many, but maybe she could take one shot from hiding at the witch...

Something moves behind the witch. Something large, and black, that shuns the light and hides itself in the forest.

From: Raja

Subject: Re: Two wizards out of town; the wrath of Elise 2

Sa'id smiles grimly. Elise might be powerful, but her control over her minions is limited. Still, wraiths are too intelligent for him to easily turn these two against one another. Not worth the risk. Better to just destroy them. He can feel the chill of the wraith's touch spreading across his chest, but the fury simmering in his gut helps him to ignore the pain. Farron's haste spell spared him from the creature's touch once, and he'd return the favour as best he could. He points at the attacking wraith, conjuring more fire [Scorching Ray].

OOC: Much too late for Magic Circle against Evil now. Fire it is.

Subject: Re: Melani goes it alone; Not a good night for adventurers

Ok I am on the opposite side of the group, looking at the witch? I mean her face is towards Melani and the black thing is behind her. How far am I from her? Melani would know that she only has a chance of killing the witch if she is within 30 feet. She would get a little damage plus her sneak attack, but there is almost no way she could kill the witch with out doing a critical.

Oh trust me I am thinking about it.

I am torn, a little. She would probably go for it. She has transfered her hatred for what happened to her brother to the witch: She blames the witch. She is CG and this is a matter of family honor/pride. The 8 halflings do not bother her. The black thing does.

A critical hit with a sneak attack does 8-27 points. She gets a -20 on her hide roll after the attack, which puts a real crimp in her style. Plus the black thing. :)

Give me a few minutes to write something up.

Her eyes go hard when she sees the witch. There was the bitch that killed her brother. The Murkat she would have to deal with and the black shadow worried her, but she would not get a chance like this again. No time like now to kill her.

OOC:Moving slowly around the small camp, she tries to get to the witch's side with in about 30 feet. If possible Take 10 on the hide and move silent, if not just normal.

When she gets into position, she grips her bothers bow and says a quick prayer to his spirit."Brother mine, guide this arrow into the black heart of the bitch that killed you."(Fate point for attack roll of 20 critical threat). She releases the arrow and quickly sets another arrow to her bow.

Chaos. Halflings seeming to appear and disappear all around him in the inky blackness. Pensive's nightvision blinded every time he looks toward the glow from Garyth's horse. Then, a Halfling appears to his north, aiming its bow toward the light. Pensive snaps the stonesash to its full length, power flowing to it from the tattoo on his neck, and whips it toward the halfling's (Don't think of the soldier in the witch's camp and the bones in his head shifting sideways) Head. [Attack 21 vs AC 15, hit; Damage 10] The halfling's head is snapped sideways by the force of the blow, but he does not fall down.

Arrows continue to fall out of the dark around Garyth. [Attack 18 vs AC17, hit; damage 3] An arrow hits his leg, bouncing off the hard armor over his thigh, but leaving a bruise he knows he'll feel in the morning. If there is a morning. [Attack 11 vs AC17, miss] A second arrow strikes the ground near his glowing horse. The second group of archers must still be taking their shots from a fair distance.

Robert fires his crossbow at the Halfling nearest him. [attack natural 1, miss] The bolt flies well wide of its target, and he curses and drops the crossbow, moving to draw his sword.

Munch also fires his crossbow [attack 24, hit; damage 5] but his aim is true, and the Halfling nearest him staggers back with a bolt in its chest. Munch drops his crossbow to draw his sword.

Pensive never even sees the Halfling behind him drawing its bow. [Attack 19 vs AC 19, hit; Damage 6] The arrow hits just under his arm, the broad head cutting bloody trails in both his arm and his side, before whizzing off into the dark.

A Halfling fires its bow at Kenneth's back [Attack 11, miss] but the Falcon's armor stops it.

Garyth draws his weapons [quickdraw] and slides off his mount's back. When he hits the ground, he swats the horse with the flat of his sword, sending it running off (hopefully) toward the second group of archers. Almost as an afterthought, he swings the blade in a flat arc at the Murrkat closest to him. [Attack 16 vs AC 15, hit; Damage 12] The Halfling drops, its face split open at the nose, like a bloody second mouth.

An arrow flies at Garyth from the dark, [Attack 24 vs AC17; damage 5] striking him in the back.

Kenneth wheels his horse around, and fires at the Halfling behind him [Attack 19 vs AC 15, hit; Damage 8]. The Halfling screeches as a bolt hits his knee, driving him to the ground. Kenneth drops the crossbow to draw his sword.

A Halfling near Vincy fires his bow up at the Falcon [Attack 22 vs AC 18, hit; Damage 4]. The arrow sticks into the armor on his shoulder, drawing a small trickle of blood.

Two arrows fly from the dark at Osred [Attacks 9, 19 vs AC 19, miss, hit; Damage 5]. One glances harmlessly from his shield, but the second scores a hit on the unarmored back of his thigh.

Osred spins his mount, alternately cursing and calling on Hieronious. He charges at the Halfling closest to him [Attack 25, hit; damage 9]. His longsword, gleaming with Hieronious' blessings, slashes through the Halfling, leaving a blood trail on his chest.

The Halfling Pensive struck recovers from the blow to his head. He shifts his aim to fire at the elf [Pensive AOO, Attack 24, hit; damage 6] but he never gets a chance to fire. Pensive snaps the stonesash at him again, this time cracking his skull open at the forehead, and dropping him stone dead on the ground.

Another Halfling fires at Vincy [attack 15 vs AC 18, miss] but his arrow flies wide.

Two arrows fly in out of the dark at Kenneth. [Attacks 21, 15 vs AC 18, hit, miss; Damage 5] One arrow strikes the Falcon on the side, though he does not look seriously harmed.

A Halfling fires his bow into Munch's back at point blank range. [Attack 25 vs AC 19, hit; Damage 8] The arrow passes through his armor, and hangs from his back, buried several inches under his shoulder blade.

Two more arrows fly from the dark at Kenneth. [Attack natural 20, threat 22 vs AC18, hit; attack 16 vs AC 18, miss; Damage 14] One arrow slams into the Falcon's chest, knocking him from his horse, and causing him to cough blood into the air as he falls.

The Halfling to the south of Osred fires his bow at the Cleric's flank. [Attack 19 vs AC 19, hit; damage 7] The cleric feels the arrow pass through the armor on his right arm, and stick in the meat of his tricep.

The Halfling in front of the cleric uses this chance to drop his bow and draw a shortsword. He dives forward, right under Osred's spinning mount, and stabs up at the cleric's leg. [Attack 17 vs AC 19, miss] Osred is able to turn his leg so that the sword glances harmlessly from the heavy armor of his greaves.

Two more arrows fly from the dark at Robert. [Attack natural 20, threat 21, hit; attack 13, miss; damage 11] One of the arrows passes completely through the young Falcon's left forearm, and he screams in pain and anger.

While Robert is distracted by the shaft sticking through his arm, the Halfling right in front of him shoots him with his bow. [Attack natural 1, miss] Fortunately, Robert's sudden twist to the right causes his horse to spin, and its hindquarters knock the Halfling's bow away.

Another arrow slices in from the dark at Pensive. [Attack natural 1, miss] Pensive can hear it coming, and shifts in his saddle almost without thinking. The arrow passes harmlessly by him.

Vincy fires his crossbow at the nearest Halfling [Attack 17 vs AC 15, hit; Damage 7] shooting him in the stomach. He then drops the crossbow to draw his sword.

Two more arrows come flying in from the dark at Garyth [Attacks 15, 8 vs AC 17, miss]. But here on the ground, with his horse rapidly moving away, he is a much more difficult target. Both arrows strike the ground several feet away

Truth passes through the wraith like it were gossamer, it's ghostly body offers no resistance and the resulting over-swing almost throws Kasen from his saddle before he wrenches the blade back across the thing's face. Seeing the wraith lose it's form he nudges Stormcloud's side and she jumps forward, covering the short distance to the wraith attacking Farron in a heartbeat. Using the horse's momentum Kasen thrusts Truth like a lance, through the wraith's midsection, before jerking the blade upward, cutting its way free from the creature's body.

OOC - Full attack if the move was a 5' step, otherwise just an attack (Power attack +3 on the first swing either way). I'm hasted too, right? So any extra moves become more wraith-thrwacks if possible.

Subject: Melani goes it alone; a shot in the dark

Melani makes her decision, and prays to her brother for strength. She thinks maybe she dies this day, and she does not want fear to rob her of her will.

Moving as slowly and quietly as any small forest creature, she drifts around the edge of the Halfling group. After a few moments, though, the group seems to reach some sort of decision. One of the Halflings bends down and picks up a large vellum, maybe a map. He begins rolling it up. The witch turns to speak to the black thing behind her. Melani sees her chance.

She stands up into her archer's stance, taking a deep breath and then letting half of it out. Her eye sights down the shaft of her arrow, and all her prayers are for it to fly true. She fires.

[Fate point used; Attack natural 20, threat 30, hit; Damage 23]

The arrow flies straight and true from her bow, all her will and the blessings of her brother guiding it to the witch's back. It strikes just to the right of the witch's spine with a sound like a meat cleaver. The witch staggers forward, unable to scream because the wind has been knocked from her. Melani curses to herself, because the witch does not fall. For a second, the camp is in silence.

Then the Halflings scream and charge in the direction of the shot, and the black shape jumps into the light. It is a terrible creature, half man, half boar, black as the night and with tusks nearly six inches long.

Seeing the wraith lose it's form he nudges Stormcloud's side and she jumps forward, covering the short distance to the wraith attacking Farron in a heartbeat. Using the horse's momentum Kasen thrusts Truth like a lance, through the wraith's midsection. [Ethereal creature 33%; Attack 27 vs AC 15, hit; damage 21] Once again, Truth flashes with power as it cleaves through the wraith. Kasen wants to strike it again, but must regain his balance to stay on Storm's back [more than five foot step, not full attack].

The now damaged wraith screeches, but does not attack Kasen. It launches itself again a Farron [Attack 13 vs AC 17, miss], but this time the magic protecting him stops the ethereal claws. Unfortunately, this time Farron is not able to keep control of his mount [ride check failed], and the horse throws him from its back, and then runs off past the wraith and into the dark.

The other wraith, having once gotten a taste of Sa'id life force, hungers for more. It continues to claw at him [Attack 16 vs AC 16, hit; damage 2; saving throw 14 vs DC 14, success] and once again the claws pass through him trailing biting cold. But this time, his will is strong enough to stop the draining of his life force.

Farron, fallen to the ground, does not let it stop him from pressing the attack. He quickly utters the incantation for magic missile, and points his finger at the approaching wraith. The wraith slides down at him with oily quickness while he casts [AOO; attack 22, hit; damage 1; saving throw 13 vs AC 14, fail, damage 5 Con] This time, the Wraith's claw seems to pass into Farron's chest, and grip his heart. Farron screams at the terrible cold, and the wizard can actually feel it stop his heart, then he passes into darkness. [With con damage farron is at -3]

Sa'id hears the scream of his friend behind him, but knows that if he turns now, the wraith will have him. Pointing his finger at it, he begins uttering the eleven syllables of the scorching ray spell. But the wraith continues to press him [AOO; attack natural 20; threat 9, hit; damage 4; saving throw 14 vs DC 14; success] and once again its claws fill him with a bitter chill. He clamps down his will, forcing himself to finish the spell [concentration check 27 vs DC 14; success] and a lance of blinding fire streaks from his finger at the wraith. [Ethereal creature 56%, failed] But the wraith fades out as the fire passes through it, and when it waxes back into view, it seems undamaged by the spell.

RETCON.

-------------------------------------------------------

[Initiative rolls Kasen 21, Wraith3 17, Wraith2 15, Farron 9, Wraith1 8, Sa'id 5]

The other wraith is freaking held.

Sa'id hears the scream of his friend behind him, and turns to see what has happened. Farron lies on the ground, looking dead, while the wraith hovers over him with its hand buried in his chest. Sa'id yells in anger, and points his finger at the creature while the syllables of the scorching ray burn in his mind. A lance of fire leaps at the creature [ethereal creature 98%, miss], but it fades like a ghost, and the fire passes through it harmlessly.

[sorry about that guys]

[Initiative Halfling6, Melani, wereboar, Halfling2, Halfling7, witch, Halfling3, halfling8, halfling5, Halfling1, halfling4]

Melani shrugs aside the desire to flee. The wereboar moved to quickly. It would just run her down in the dark. She had made her decision when she took the first shot, and she would not back away from it now.

One of the Halflings runs across the open ground at her, charging her recklessly with his short sword. [Attack 16 vs AC20, miss] Melani side steps him almost contemptuously, and he goes stumbling off into the dark behind her.

She fires two arrows in rapid succession at the witch, whose back is still to her. [Attacks 29, 29, hit, hit; Damage 7, 12] Both arrows strike true, and the witch is slammed to the ground, three feathered shafts sticking from her back.

Melani doesn't have time to drop her bow, or draw another weapon, before the wereboar is on her. It slams into her small form in a horrific charge gouging with tusks. [Attack 11 vs AC 20, miss] But the small Halfling is fast, and when the wereboar reaches her, she does not try to dodge to one side or the other, she just takes its charge head on, throwing herself backward and under the tusks, allowing the boar to fly over her and hit the ground several yards behind her. She then rolls to her feet.

The other Halflings do not charge, the run up to her, and then stop, just out of her reach. They surround her in a ring, short swords drawn.

One of them spits at her in guttural Halfling, "You die this day, bitch."

Farron falls.

Never has Kasen felt the absence of Helm more profoundly than this moment. For all his years of devotion Helm had never reached out to him, never touched him as one of his blessed. He felt almost toyed with, teased with the prospect of vengeance only to have it plucked from his breast by a dead hand. Conal could have destroyed the wraith with one hand and healed Farron with the other. But for Kasen, for Kasen there were no options.

Farron falls and takes a piece of Kasen's justice with him.

Kasen drives his greatsword down through the kneeling wraith (Power Attack +6), before twisting it free to lop the head from its body.

Ummmm....

Melani might last a round or two, but you do realize there is almost no chance of her actually surviving, right?

At the very least, she will be attacked six times each round, with two of them being flank attacks, and one being a back attack. Not to mention the wereboar just sitting there outside the ring of Halflings, waiting to chow down on her.

She can't outrun anyone here. In fact the wereboar is almost twice as fast as she is. She has no silver weapons, or any magical hand weapons.

She made an awesome suicide strike, and maybe she can take a murrkat or two with her.

But she *is* toast.

Well, you need to make 6 tumble rolls, each harder than the last to get out of the circle. Then you need to make 9 opposed bluff rolls. Then you need to make 9 opposed hide rolls.

Then you need to move away while 9 people use their spot skill to try and find you. All of whom can move faster because they aren't hiding.

I dig what you are trying to do. I just don't want to set you up for thinking it is likely.

[Initiative rolls Kasen 21, Wraith3 17, Wraith2 (held4) 15, Farron 9, Sa'id 5]

Kasen howls in anger at the wraith, as it straddles Farron and pulls the life from him. The wraith seems less damaged than before. It must be able to use the stolen life force to heal itself, somehow. Heal this, Kasen thinks, as he thrusts the greatsword into the wraith's back. [Ethereal creature 17% 64%, 56%; Attacks natural 1, 21, natural 1, miss, miss, miss;] If he was hurt by the failure of Helm to stop Farron's apparent death, he is now devastated by his own inability to avenge it. The wraith moves and twists and fades from reality, and when Kasen is done swinging, it still hovers over Farron, its claws in his chest.

The wraith spins around, looking up at the knight through its skeletal mask, and then leaps at him screeching. [Attack 8, miss] But if Kasen himself lacks Helm's grace, the weapon Truth has a plentitude of it. The glowing blade turns the specter away, just as it did before.

Behind it, Sa'id waits until the creature is facing away, then hurls another scorching ray at its back. [ethereal creature 48%; touch attack 11 vs AC15, miss] Through some unholy second sight, the creature seems to know when and where the spell will be cast, and shifts its body sideways at the last moment, the lance of fire shooting harmlessly into the night. Sa'id screams with frustration. He knows the clock is ticking. The wraith behind him will not remain held forever.

On the cold ground, Farron drifts in blackness. He can hear the fight around him, though it sounds distant. Inside his own body is only silence, as for the first time in his life, his heart does not beat. The blood does not rush in his ears. No sounds of breath from his chest. Wake up, he says to himself. Don't die here on the cold ground with your friends fighting for their lives. Wake up. [Stabilization roll 83%; failed; -4HP] There is no answer. Subject: Re: The Exodus; Black Magic 2

OOC: That's a good point. Let's see. The map showed 9 of them near us. We've killed two of them. Kenneth is down, and Robert and Munch are probably not far off. Hopefully, if Garyth's horse gets out of the area, the remaining 15 archers will start missing more. I figure we need to get rid of at least a couple more before we're in the clear, though. Let's see, we were coming in from the north, right? Let's back up over my last post.

IC: Garyth turns his head just in time to see Kenneth fall from his horse. Pelor curse these halflings, there are just too many of them. They had to withdraw. "Cut your way clear and fall back!" he shouts. Even as the words are leaving his lips he is moving to aid Kenneth.

OOC: Garyth will move up and attack any halflings threatening Kenneth. The plan is then to pick Kenneth up and sling him over the back of his horse, then ride double on the way out.

Only minutes before these undead had been wearing Elise's face and part of him feels this may be the closest he is allowed to come to striking her down. Especially if the other wizard falls. He should have some plan, some course of action to pull them all away and save the day, but all he can come up with is to hit the thing harder.

Pensive ignores the pain slicing across his arms.

"Now, horse," he whispers in low elvish. "Now, we take 'em 'cross the river." He wheels the beast away from the dead halfling, and spurs it in the direction of the halfling that had fired upon him.

OOC:

He will attack this halfling with flurry, getting near enough to fold the stonesash in half, dodge point on the halfling he's attacking. (Mike, I think you have to declare your dodge every round.)

If this attack would incur an AOO, he'll keep the stonesash extended and just use a non-flurry attack.

From: Jake

Subject: Re: The Exodus; Black Magic 2

Osred barks a curse as the arrow buries itself in his bicep, then closes his eyes for a moment, accepting the pain as a lesson from Hieronious, feeling the throbbing ache of the torn and bruised flesh transform into an almost intoxicating rush of pleasure. His god's words may be sharp, but their message, their blessing sings through him as he opens his eyes, cleansing him of the sins of his former life.

He laughs aloud as the halfling dives beneath his mount, casually turning his leg to catch the Murrkat's blade on his greaves. How can this creature fail to understand that, strike or not, he does Hieronious's will. He is the Lord's messenger, and he is blind to it. A beatific smile on his face, Osred locks eyes with the Halfling as he plunges his longsword into his foe's breast.

"Cut your way clear and fall back!" Garyth shouts.

His captain's words penetrate Osred's consciousness slowly. Fall back? But the battle had just begun. He looks toward his captain's voice, and in the fading light sees Kenneth sprawled bonelessly on the ground. His god's voice still sings in his veins, calling him on to battle, but there is battle of a sort in this as well, preventing death from claiming a man who had fought bravely in Hieroneous's name. He spurs his mount toward the fallen soldier, intent on collecting him before leaving the field.

Subject: Melani out of the frying pan and into the fire

She had done it. She had avenged her brother. Now his spirit could rest. The relief was a weight off of her own spirit. Now it was time to see to her survival. Survival? That hardly seemed likely. The 8 Murrkat scum were enough to deal with by themselves. In normal conditions she might be able to kill a few and fade away into the night. However it was the pig creature that really had her worried. She recognized what it was. The Bel'neth had taught her. Shapechanger. Werebeast. It was fast. She had no weapon that could hurt it. It could track her without seeing her. What else had the Bel'neth taught her about them? Damn she had to remember.

Still her people were not ones to just give up. Since she could not fight the beast, she would have to run. She would have to warn her people that there was a werebeast. It would take special planning to kill that creature. Maybe the humans could do it. They had large weapons. How best to keep distance between her and the beast? Well Murrkat would make a nice wall. Glancing behind her and judging the direction, she runs and tumbles by the two Murrkat the furthest away from the beast, trying to get the crowd between her and it. As she tumbles she yells "Warriors of Overlook, Attack!!!!! The witch is dead, attack!!!!!!!" as loud as she can, trying her best to get the Murrkat to take their eyes off of her, just for a second. That is all she might need.

OOC: If I can I want to do a combination double move/tumble to get by the two murrkat that are furthest away from the wereboar, while doing the bluff. Then try and hide. I know it is a lot and if the bluffs fail I guess I fight. Is there any tree near by that I can get my back against? How about the wind direction?

One of the Halflings darts in from the closing circle, and makes a quick slash at Melani [attack 8, miss], but she sidesteps the blade and shoves the Halfling away.

As the ring of Murrkat closes in on Melani, she spins to face the Halfling on the opposite side from the wereboar. Screaming at him to make him hesitate, she lunges forward, stepping on his foot and pushing him backwards, then grabbing his shirt and attempting to use his weight to launch herself over his head. [Tumble attempt 17 vs DC 25]

Unfortunately, the Murrkat twists away, doesn't fall backward. Instead, he stabs out at her with his short sword [AOO; attack 16, miss]. She is able to evade it easily, but it costs her momentum, and he is able to shove her back into the ring.

Outside the ring, the wereboar roars and, standing up to its full height, shoves its way into the ring, knocking one hapless Murrkat out of the way. It grabs at Melani with one massive claw [attack 29, hit; damage 9]. The wereboar snatches her from her feet, lifting her a yard off the ground, then slams her down, knocking the wind from her. She rolls away quickly, but suddenly she is being stabbed at from everywhere [2 attacks, 2 flank attacks; attacks 25, 24, 26, 15, hit, hit, hit, miss; damage 4, 5, 5]. She is able to push back to her feet, but she is bleeding from many cuts, and the wereboar moves toward her, an ugly contemptuous grin on its face.

Munch spins his horse to face the Halfling behind him, then charges. [Attack 10 vs AC15, miss] The nimble Murrkat darts low under his horse and evades the attack.

The Halfling Pensive has engaged drops his longbow, and draws his shortsword, then tries to tumble past the stonesash at Pensive's horse. He runs straight at the Murrkat, and plunges his longsword into its throat right up to the guard, then yanks sideways. The halfling's head is nearly torn off.

An arrow comes in at Robert [Attack 16 vs AC20, miss] but lands a few feet from him.

The Halfling near Vincy drops his bow and pulls out a glass vial from his belt, then hurls it into the center of the melee. It breaks open with a blinding light, and spatters glowing liquid around the battle field.

Two more arrows come in at Pensive [Attacks 14, 11, miss, miss], but again the Monk is too fast, and easily moves in the saddle to avoid them.

Osred is charging toward Kenneth when he sees the young man die. His thoughts turn to revenge, but even that is taken from him when Garyth cuts the head off the Halfling. He rides up next to Garyth. Kenneth's horse stands nearby.

The other Halfling near Vincy takes a shot at him [attack 24 vs AC18, hit; damage 5], and hits him in the hip.

This is followed by two more arrows falling on the guardsman [Attack 13, 8, miss, miss], but both miss Vincy.

The Halfling firing at Munch takes another shot [Attack 9, miss] but misses.

The Halflings in the dark seem to have taken a special interest in Pensive, and two more arrows are sent his way. The monk sees them coming now, in the bright light from the glowing potion, and notices that the trajectory is much flatter and from a new angle. The Halflings are moving in and spreading out, though they do remain outside the circle of light. [Attacks 10, 9, miss, miss] With plenty of time to see them coming, Pensive has no trouble evading both arrows.

A Halfling moves up closer to Osred's back and fires at it. [Back attack 19 vs AC19, hit; damage 9] The arrow passes through the armor and sticks painfully into his back.

Another Halfling moves over behind Robert and fires into his back [Back attack natural 20, critical threat 1, hit; damage 6].

Another pair of arrows come whistling in at Pensive. [Attack 16, 24, miss, hit; damage 4] The first arrow is easy to avoid, but the second sneaks in past his guard and cuts a painful wound on his thigh.

The other Halfling near Robert fires up at him, but Robert is close enough to hit him while he draws the bow [AOO; attack 9, miss]. Unfortunately, the Halfling is too quick, and dodges Robert's thrust, then fires up at his face [Attack natural 1]. But Robert's swing did enough to spoil the halfling's aim, and the arrow shoots past.

An arrow flies in from the dark at Vincy. [Attack 16 vs AC18, miss]

Vincy can hear the captain yelling to cut clear and escape, but he is worried about leaving two archers to fire into his back if he does. So he attacks the nearest again [Attack natural 20, crit threat 7, hit; damage 5] The already wounded Murrkat goes down screeching, Vincy's sword having opening a third eye it its forehead.

Another two arrows come flying in from the dark at Garyth [Attack 20, 9, hit, miss; damage 6] and one of them scores a hit on his chest.

"Humans. I know where they are going and what they plan on doing."

[Bluff attempt 23 vs Sense Motive 10]

The wereboar yanks Melani closer, until she is choking on its fetid breath, and can see the chips and gouges in its tusks. For a moment she thinks she will die now. The wereboar will stick her head into its huge mouth, and just bite it off. This fear is not assuaged by the wereboar licking her face with its thick course tongue.

Then it chuckles. "Tie her up. She goes to the mountain."

Before she can even react, the wereboar lifts her over his head, then slams her to the ground with bone crunching force. Immediately she is swarmed by the surrounding Murrkat, who hit her repeatedly with their fists and the pommels of their swords. She finds herself oddly grateful to the Murrkat who finally knocks her unconscious.

Pensive does not see the guardsman die-- but he smells Garyth's rage like a burning wind, and turns back.

Blood and stone. Now he sees the dead man, and the body of the halfling in front of Garyth.

He whips the stonesash in half, and strikes out at the halfling nearest him.

Before Sa'id's frustrated scream peters out, Kasen kills the second wraith. The necromancer regains some small measure of control over his anger. Sa'id moves his horse as close as possible to the two men.

"I will cast a spell, centred on Farron, to shield us in case the last wraith breaks free of my spell. We cannot attack from within the shield or it will be broken, but if we move away from Farron we will be free to attack." [Magic Circle against Evil, touching Farron]. "I will do what little I can for him," he says. "Do you have any skill in healing?"

OOC: Sa'id will cast the spell this round and use his heal skill on Farron next round to stabilize him.

Only a few short yards separate Garyth from Kenneth, but it might as well be a mile. He sees it happen as though in slow motion. Kenneth struggles to get his feet beneath him and, for a moment, his eyes meet Garyth's. There's trust there--he knows his captain won't let him down. This was the man that saved his life back at the battle outside Overlook. This is a man who gets the job done. I'm coming, thinks Garyth. Hold on, just hold on.

But suddenly a confused look comes over Kenneth's face. His eyes widen and he looks down to see the arrowhead that has sprouted from his chest. Kenneth lifts his head once more before he falls. Garyth can see the shock, and more, the incomprehension, the reproach that his captain didn't save him. Kenneth's mouth moves silently, as though he were trying to say something. Garyth can hear the voice in his head. How could you let this happen? How could you lead your men to death? And when Kenneth slumps to the ground, something inside Garyth snaps.

A guttural, primal scream tears from his throat as he falls on the halfling. There is no thought as he strikes, only blind, consuming, desperate rage. Garyth's blade cleaves the halfling's throat with a satisfying crunch, and he savagely twists his blade free. He whirls about, his bloodlust still not fulfilled. Two halflings advance on Robert, their brutish faces twisted in evil grins. With an arrow through his arm and another protruding from his back, Robert won't last much longer.

Completely disregarding his own safety, Garyth charges toward the two halflings.

Subject: Two wizards out of town; The wrath of Elise

::end of last round, and beginning of next::

[Initiative rolls Kasen 21, Wraith2(held2) 15, Farron 9, Wraith1 8, Sa'id 5]

Sa'id moves to Farron's side, and casts the circle of protection spell. At the very least, now the wraith can no longer attack his fallen friend.

Kasen rides Storm out and around the single remaining wraith, putting himself at the creatures back. Sa'id signals to him once the circle is prepared, and Kasen attacks the frozen wraith. [(first attack power attack 6)Attacks 9, 26, 16; ethereal creature 45%, 13%, 22%; miss, hit, hit; damage 17, 19] The final wraith comes apart under Truth's power, and fades from site.

Farron continues to fade [Stabilize roll 75%, failed, -6hp].

And just like that, the night goes black again, the eerie glow from the three undead lost, and Truth's bright sheen already fading.

[Give me actions. Karl, you can play Sa'id. Are you going to use your fate point to stabilize? Or do you want to give Sa'id one try at using his heal skill? He can make the attempt, though his is very bad at it. You have 3 rounds to play with, so it's up to you.]

Pensive watches the agile Halfling dart under his horse, knowing that it can now stab up at the horses belly or his own legs. He yanks back on the stonesash with his right hand, letting it fly past him and catching it in the middle with his left. He then whips the two ends of the sash down under the horse, hoping to drive the Halfling out, or kill it outright. [flurry of blows; Attacks 23, 19, hit, hit; damage 6, 10; death] Both ends of the sash come down on the halfling's head, crushing his skull with a snap, and spraying the horses belly with blood and gray matter. Pensive now has an open path back to the fleeing town. [full round action taken, no move possible.]

A pair of arrows are fired from the dark at Munch, neither falls within three feet of him. [Attacks 15, 8 vs AC 19, miss]

Robert wheels his horse, trying to fight his way clear of the melee and back to his captain. He attacks the Halfling who just shot him in the back in the hopes of clearing a path out of the fight. [Attack 19 vs AC 15, hit; damage 6] The already wounded Halfling goes down, bleeding from a nasty wound to the neck.

Munch continues to press the attack on the last Halfling between him and safety. He drives his horse forward, hammering his sword down at the archer's head [Attack 11 vs AC15, miss], but the wily Murrkat is too quick, and easily sidesteps his attack.

Garyth rushes up to help Robert just in time to see the Falcon take the halfling down. He is too far from Robert's second opponent to attack him, but he yells up to Falcon, "Go! I will cover your retreat!" If that second Murrkat decided to take a shot at Robert's back as he rode off, Garyth would cut him in half.

Unfortunately, Garyth becomes the center of attention. He stands not more than ten feet from the glowing puddle in the middle of the battlefield. Three arrows come hissing in from the dark in rapid succession. [Attacks 24, 8, 16, hit, miss, miss; damage 2] Only one of the arrows strikes him, and that one just glances off his boiled leather pauldrons, giving him a crack on the collar bone.

Osred takes in the battlefield at a glance. One archer remains close at hand, and will have to be dealt with. Kenneth is dead, but his horse stands next to the body. The captain has sent his own horse off into the dark, to get its glow away from them. The Falcon's are beginning the retreat at the captain's orders, and most of them will have hacked their way clear in just moments. The captain himself has charged off into the middle of the fray like a madman, but he did it to protect one of his men, and the big sergeant can't fault him for that. It's something Osred would do too. He decides to finish of the Murrkat closest to him, and then take Kenneth's horse over to Garyth. The last rites for the young guardsman would have to wait. Osred hopes the dark Halflings will not desecrate the body. This thought brings on a new burst of battle rage, and Osred charges the closest Halfling. [Attack 19 vs AC15, hit; damage 9] The Halfling raises one arm to protect himself from Osred's blade, and the sergeant's heavy overhand chop slashes through its forearm in a spray of blood.

With more than half of the visible Halflings killed, the Murrkat fighting Vincy decides that discretion is the better part of valor, and turns and runs off into the dark. Vincy lets him go, and turns to flee himself.

Two more arrows come flying in at Garyth. Apparently, someone on the Halfling side has realized that he is in charge, and they are now concentrating their fire on him. [Attacks 11, 17, miss, hit; damage 1.] Again, one hits his armor, but bounces off with little visible effect.

The Halfling fighting with Munch drops his bow and draws his shortsword, stabbing up at the Falcon's leg. [Attack 16 vs AC19, miss] The guardsman keeps wheeling his horse, and the Murrkat is unable to land a good blow.

Another pair of arrows fly in at Garyth. [Attack natural 20, threat 18, critical; damage 9; attack 13, miss] The first arrow strikes Garyth under his right arm, and lodges painfully in his ribs. The second flies past his face and disappears in the dark.

The Murrkat that just had his arm opened up by Osred begins retreating back into the dark [withdrawal move].

More arrows are shot at Garyth. [Attack 21, 17, hit, hit; damage 1, 2] Both just lightly graze his armor, but the constant barrage is beginning to add up. He is bleeding from a dozen small wounds now.

The Halfling at Robert's back takes one final shot at him before running off into the dark. [Back attack 19, hit; Damage 7] The Falcon yelps and spurs his horse as yet another arrow buries itself in the back of his armor.

Another arrow is shot at Garyth. [Attack 19 vs AC17, hit; damage 4]

Vincy, seeing a clear path out of the fight, charges his horse over to Munch to help him finish off his remaining opponent.

A final pair of arrows are fired from the dark. [Attack 14, 12, miss, miss] These two seem to have been shot from further away, and fall several feet short.

Kasen runs his fingers down his blade, thanking Helm for his blessings as he does so. He had had his doubts when he left the city, not that his path was the wrong one, but that he was not walking it in the manner in which he should. This victory did not mean his actions were justified, just that the ends justified the means... for now. He would be punished when Elise was finally brought down, of that he had no doubts. Just as this wizard was being punished now, though Kasen does not know his sins.

He eases Truth back in its scabbard and rides up beside Sa'id, leaning down to place a hand on his shoulder. "I know you love him, Sa'id, but we cannot stop here. Help him up to ride with me and pray he has the strength to come back to us while we ride... I am eager to leave this place."

Darkness stretches in front of him. Pensive can see the embers of fires where Overlook had camped, but otherwise, the night was black in front of him.

He turns to see Garyth fighting on the edge of a large bubble of light. There's a lesson in this-- some hidden secret that Pensive cannot comprehend right now. He notices with distaste that the stonesash is slick in his hands, and a crazy, chaotic thought sniggers that he will never be able to wash the stain of the halfling's brain out of the cloth. Never, never, little elf boy, burn it, burn you, come, come . . .

"I'm coming," Pensive whispers to the wind.

But not yet.

Pensive wheels the horse about, and rides to attack the halfling nearest Munch with the stonesash extended.

OOC: Nope, no horse yet.

IC: The arrow to his ribs makes Garyth stagger. He sucks in a breath at the impact and feels a sharp pain as the point grazes something inside him. He grimaces, but it brings him back to himself a little, the red haze of bloodlust clearing a bit from his mind. He won't survive a few more shots like that. Though, as bad as his own wounds are, Robert looks worse--that last shot has him swaying in the saddle.

"Get moving, soldier!" Garyth shouts, wincing as the arrow shifts in his ribs. The halflings are moving off; if there's a time to retreat, it's now. Though, Garyth feels a rather unpleasant twinge of disappointment at the realization that the halflings are out of range.

OOC: Garyth will cover Robert's retreat, attacking any halflings who come near. If Robert makes his move successfully, Garyth will follow him out.

Osred begins to more toward the halfling, eager to gut him, leave him broken on the ground as the Murrkat had left Kenneth. Before the impulse has had the chance to translate into movement, however, he checks himself. It would be just like the Murrkat to lead him away from his forces and cut him down when he stood alone, stripped of his men. He spits at the retreating halfling, then wheels his mount around, collects Kenneth's horse, and leads it to his captain.

Pensive yells to the two guardsmen, "Go get the captain!"

Robert spurs his horse past Garyth, running for the retreating camp.

Munch, spurred by Pensive's shout, turns his horse looking for Garyth. When he sees him standing alone by the light, he runs his horse over to help.

Garyth begins moving toward the approaching Osred, planning to take Kenneth's mount. Something is wrong though. An itch on his spine. No arrows. The arrows aren't coming down around him. "There moving," he says to no one in particular. Where are you going now?

Osred rides over to the captain with Kenneth's horse behind him. "A mount, sir. Best we was leaving while the leavings good."

For the first time in his life Sa'id curses the magic he has studied -- the magic of death. Would that Cadfael were here, he thinks as he pounds on Farron's chest and slaps his face, remembering with envy the power his friend had channeled from his god. Power that had brought Sa'id back from the very brink of death what seemed now like months ago, though it was only days.

Help me, please, oh Great One, he prays silently. Though we are not followers of your way, we do your work on this quest. Please help us now.

No not followers (dare he even think the word "yet?"), but they were chosen nonetheless to walk this path at this moment, trudging once again toward the dark temple. He wants to cry out "HAVEN'T WE EARNED YOUR FAVOR YET?" as his friend lies dying at his knees. But he has felt the power of the god and seen what gods can do to those who earn their wrath. The gods help those who help themselves. Fortune smiles on the prepared. Platitudes, but only because they hold some truth. In all his study of, anatomy and reanimation, decay and death why hadn't he studied how to prevent it. Just one course in healing, he thought. Just one and I might be able to save him.

"Help me, Pelor" he cries out, hoping it's not in vain, silently adding, I know I am no healer, but I have studied and know the body well. Surely that counts for something!

He turns again to his fallen friend, pulling open his robes, exposing his chest, his flesh cold to the touch like a corpse. "NO!" he cries. "You will not leave us!" You will not leave me alone to finish this. He places his hands on Farron's chest, feeling for a heartbeat, then his ear hoping for even the faintest of throbbing beats. Thump. . . . . . . . thump. . . . . oh so faint, like a reed tapping on a boulder in an oasis breeze. Not dead yet. Bending lower over his friend, he places his mouth next to Farron's ear, his cheek, warm and alive against his friend's, cold but not-yet dead. "Hold on," he whispers. "Just hold on," he says, then pounds his friend's chest yet again, hoping against hope to shock his heart back into a rhythm of life.
