Introductions are made and Mund performs

From: Porter

Subject Mund

Mund finishes teaching that snob Harry a lesson, and was wondering if this might be the group that Quarion had hired him to look after, when some dandy of a city boy in the back gets an odd expression on his face.

"Hello, Mund. It's, um... it's been a long time"

Mund stands there with a stupefied expression on his face. Who is this feller? How does he know my name? There's something about him that seems familiar, but..."

Then it hits him. Mund lets out a yell, charges, and grabs hold of his little brother Alley. Harp and Salix think that he is attacking Allistair, and are about to intervene when the apparent grapple turns into a giant bear hug and it is apparent that it was a cry of joy and not of war.

With a big grin on his face, Mud says "Alley! What'cha doin' out here? From what Ma said, I figgered you'd *never* leave the city! Look at you! Goodness, you look more than half elf with that get-up."

Mund feels Alley's bicep. "Boy, you've gone soft in that big-city school." Mund takes a second look and says "You do look healthy, though. I hope you've had the good sense to not spend all your time indoors."

Mund starts to wonder why he Alley hasn't answered any of his questions and realizes that he hasn't given him a chance. "So, what brings you here, and who are these... fellers?"

Subject Mund

Allistair lets out his breath, relieved that he wasn't having to relive another ass whooping from his older brother. He brushes off his robes, briefly stooping down to pick up some spell components that fell during Mund's tackle/hug. He scratches his head for a moment in response to Mund's question. He's not sure how much Mund knows about thier current quest, so he'll just briefly introduce everyone and leave any more explaining up to Harp.

"We are the group that Quarion has asked you to guide us through the Wildlands. The large one here is Harp, our leader and a captain of Heironious's order. The Dwarf is Ragnar, a priest of the same diety. Ran and Kal are warriors of considerable skill. I advise you not to think lightly of them due to thier elven nature, from what I have heard of thier past exploits, they are more than capable of holding thier own in any kind of engagement. This here is Salix, a Wealdward of the Druidic order. The halfling is Surin, who is both stealthy and cunning, but in general is a very relaxed fellow. And as you guessed, I am a trained wizard, in fact recently come from the Elven Academy in the Great Wood."

OOC: I hope I got Harp's rank right, I'm too lazy to sift through archives to find it. Same goes for the actual name of the order.

Allistair then turns to face the group. "This is somewhat of a surprise for me, but this is my older brother, Alemunda. I haven't seen him for over 10 years, so I'm afraid I can't tell you much more about him unless you want stories from our childhood. He'll just have to introduce himself, I suppose.

From: Karl

Subject Mund

Salix nods when introduced. Brother, huh, he thinks to himself. Wouldn't have thought they were as closely related as a bear and an owl. Still it was good to know this Mund would have a personal interest in their safety. He certainly didn't look like someone Salix would trust cold. He knew Quarion saw things in people that other men overlooked. He'd have to watch this Mund carefully to find out what it could be in his case.

(ooc-Salix, feeling a bit out of his element will fall into the role of observer unless someone asks him something directly.)

From: Kevin

Subject Mund

Harp looks at the big man, wondering "who is stronger?". When he hears his introduction, he will say gently

"It is only Sargent Harp, Mund. I work for a living. Welcome to our group. Come, lets head inside the inn, where we can eat and listen to some of your playing and see if your treatment of Harry was justified."

OOC: Mark, I will let you treat Harp as you wish for the next few days. While I have access and can add a few comments here and there, it is not easy for me read the write up, think about what I want to say and then send it back out. The site is a few miles down the road and I can only make that bike ride once a day without killing myself.

Pansy. A few mile bike ride and you are worn out? Must be all that beer lubircation.

From: Porter

Subject Mund

OOC: Are Kal and Ran introduced as just Kal and Ran, or with their full names?

IC:

Mund looks at this bizarre group. A bunch of fey elves (including his wannabe brother -- that boy even *sounds* like an elf now! How sad..) and hole-diggers. All led by by an orc.

Either these are the smartest elves that Mund has ever encountered, choosing a mighty warrior as their leader, or this is one sumabitch orc to be able to bend the will of so many elves. Although if he's so powerful, what's he doing working *with* a bunch of elves in the first place?

Huh.

Mund goes up to this oddly dressed orc and introduces himself. "Greetings, Warrior*" Mund says to Harp in a tradititional Orc greeting. Continuing in common, "As Alley said, I's your guide."

*Of course, this is said in Orcish. This phrase also has the connotation of being a warrior who has defeated elves in battle, for anyone who knows the language well. Which Mund dues

Harp looks at the smaller man, "Excuse me, I did not catch what you first said."

From: Porter

Mund looks confused. "Um, I just said hello."

Huh. This orc doesn't know Orcish. This might be a bastard Orc that knows nuthin his proud heritage.

So this group is not just following an Orc, but a miscegenated orc. Weirder and weirder.

Earlier, he noticed this Orc sizing him up, so he does the same. I can take him.

From: Mark

Subject Greetings

"Oh well yes, hello. Do you mind if we get in off the street. We have had a long journey, and from what Quarion has said we still have much travelling to do." Harp replies. He gestures towards the Inn, motioning for the others to go ahead.

From: Porter

Subject Greetings

"Sure, Sure." Mund bellows. "I've already got rooms for you. But you'd probably rather eat first. Let's go inside."

Mund leads them into the dining area of the inn. There are a a couple of people sitting at the largest table. "Scram!" Mund says to them, and they quickly move to a table in the opposite corner of the room. They've obviously met Mund before. Mund orders ale and food for everyone.

"It's a good thing that Quarion has an understanding with the the innkeeper here. I am flat broke and couldn't spend a night here in the city if it weren't for that." Mund says with a grin.

OOC: Let's assume that Mund got stable boys to take everyone's mounts before we went inside. :)

From: Mark

Subject Horses

Actually you were supposed to provide mounts for everyone. They did not bring their horses along, bucause of space reasons on the ship.

Quarion will be very "Displeased" if the party has to walk. First you would have stolen the money he sent to you for the horses and second the party will miss the portal and fail in their mission and evil will rule the world.

Happy now? :)

Subject Kal's atonement

OOC: Guys this is a little late, sorry about that. This happened early in the morning before the wedding.

Kal wakes up from his trance before daylight and spends the two hours before sunrise training. He gets together his armor and rapier and brings it down to the training yard. He buckles his sword-belt around his waist and begins a mile jog to wake up his body. Returning to the training yard Kal dons his armor and begins his combat workout.

Kal's training looks like free-form dancing. His attacks and parries are intertwined with spins and flips that navigate him through an imaginary battle. Each move flows from the one previous, his body in constant motion.

During this training, Kal's allows his mind to empty. Putting all thoughts of Harp and his atonement out of his head, he concentrates on his training. He uses his concious mind to create his enemies, while he allows his subconcious mind to handle fighting them. This continues for an hour.

The sun begins to rise. Kal finishes his dance and goes for another jog to cool off. He runs for 2 miles then returns to his quarters. There he spends time cleaning his armor and caring for his blade. When he's complete, he puts on his clothes, dons his sword, and looks for someone who can point him to an elven temple. After a few minutes, Kal manages to procure directions from a young squire of the order. Thanking him for his trouble, Kal heads immediately there.

He arrives shortly before the first morning bell. He speaks to a young acolyte for a few minutes, who leads Kal to speak with a high-priest.

Kal is brought into an open-roof garden which comprises most of the inside of the temple. All of the flora there is from elven lands, Ivys and roses and trslinas allowed to grow freely and undisturbed by their caretakers. Elven children flit about the garden laughing and dancing, singing and playing. Elven priests are about, some in trance, some praying to their God, and others just relaxing in the garden. There are a number of non-priest elves about as well, this temple seems to be an elven safe-haven in the land of the humans.

The garden fills Kal with a deep hapiness he hasn't felt in some time, a divine calmness. As he's following the acolyte a child walks up to Kal and with a smile begins to speak in elven:

"Hello!"

Kal motions for his guide to stop. He kneels in front of the elfling and smiles "Hello! I'm Kal, who are you?"

"I'm Vin, Would you like to see my do a back flip, Kal? I've been practicing for a year, I'm the best tumbler in the city!"

"Absolutely."

The elfing does two cart-wheels, and round-off followed by four back handsprings in a row.

"Ta-da!"

"Excellent!" Exclaims Kal, laughing. Can you do a backflip? With no hands?"

"Not yet, I'm trying to learn how."

"It's easy." Kal replies, "Your handsprings are good enough. Want to try?"

"Sure!"

"Ok, First watch me. Pay attention to how I tuck my legs into my chest. That allows you to spin fast enough to get all the way around."

Kal takes 3 running steps, does a round-off and then follows it with a series of three backflips.

"Now you try. I'll spot you."

Kal spends the next 10 minutes or so helping Vin and then has him try one on his own. Vin stands with his arms forward, swings them down to his sides, scrunching his body up like a spring. He flings his arms up over his head, and tucks his knees into his chest. He spins around a little too fast and lands on his feet, but tumbles down onto his back. Laughing he stands up and tries again, this time landing on his feet.

"You're a natural!" Kal laughs. "I have to go now Vin, but keep practicing, you'll have it down in no time."

"Bye Kal! Thanks!" Vin responds between flips.

Kal is brought to the center of the garden, which features a small clearing under an ancient oak tree, magically marked with the symbol of Corellon Larethian. Under the tree sits an an older elf wearing a white robe. The acolyte speaks a few words into the preists ear and then leaves. Kal is beckoned forward.

"Hello Kal. I am Lle, of the Ell clan. I am the the high-priest here. Alr says that you needed to speak with me. What's troubling you?"

Kal tells the high preist his story. Starting with his quest to kill the Bug-Bear, up to his conversation with Surin.

"An atonement isn't necessary, Kal. " The priest responds. "You treated this half-orc unfairly, but it is an understandable mistake. Orcs have always been the enemies of us elves, and you've spent your entire life training to fight the enemies of our people. You owe this Harp an apology, but our God knows your heart and understands."

"Let me give you some advice for living outside our forests. It is rare for you to be able to judge people by how they look among human lands. I've encountered all sorts of people out here, and they never cease to surprise me. I've seen dwarves that act like elves and humans that act like dwarves. I've seen orcs with hearts of pure good, and elves with hearts of pure evil. You must be wary of passing judgment on anyone before you learn who they truly are. To do otherwise will cost you companionship, and possibly your life."

"Stay a while and pray with me, Kal. It will clear your mind."

After an hour of praying, Kal thanks the high-priest and leaves for the temple. On the way out, he sees Vin practicing flips balanced on the limbs of trees. Laughing, Kal calls out words of encouragement to him, and continues back to the temple.

Kal spends his time at the sea in solitude praying and training on deck when he can. He keeps his distance from everyone, but particularly Surin and Harp. He was courteous to anyone who spoke to him, but he clearly prefered to be left alone.

During the introductions with Mund, Kal stands near the back, trying to understand his distaste for Mund.

"He's crude. He's needlessly violent. He's obnoxious." Kal thinks to himself. "The order trusts him for some reason, they trust him enough to have him help us on this quest that means a great deal to him. I won't make the same mistake I made with Harp. I'm looking at a good man, I just need to find where the good is."

Kal seats himself next to Mund and speaks to him when he gets the chance:

"Alemunda, you're a musician? Elves have always been great appreciators of music, I would love to hear you perform."

Allistair visibly winces when he notices Kal addressing his brother. Except for that unfortunate first impression at the meeting back at the chapterhouse, Kal has been polite, if very withdrawn. His brother Mund though, rarely ever had anything kind to say to or about elves, and it looks like at least that aspect of him hadn't changed much. Allistair wants to interrupt and hopefully defuse the potentially hostile exchange.

Allistair jumps in hopefully before Mund can say anything to Kal. "Yes, Mund, please play us something! I uh.. I haven't heard you play in a long time!"

Also, Allistair really hopes his musical skills have improved in the intevening years...

Subject A dwarf adrift

Ragnar begins the first day of their journey early, as is his custom. After his devotionals, he does not have much to do to prepare, as he had finished packing earlier. He tries reading for awhile but "The Life and Times of Valorshield" is unable to hold his interest. Finally he returns it to the small cabinet in his cell, grabs what few belongings he has, and heads outdoors. Although it is later now, few people are in the streets, and he heads quickly to the docks.

Sitting on a short stone wall a few hundred feet from the water, Ragnar watches the eternal progression of the waves and the endless expanse of the sea. In the back of his mind, he knows that many would find this relaxing. Ragnar's mind, however, is in turmoil. So disturbed is he by thoughts of the near future that he doesn't even notice as the first of his companions comes up behind him. He nearly falls off the wall when Salix greets him, but catches himself in time.

He exchanges a few words with Salix, who notices that he seems more cheerful and talkative than normal. When Salix continues walking, however, Ragnar remains behind. Even to his own ears, his cheerfulness had sounded forced, and he can only imagine that Salix was too polite to ask him about it.

As the sun climbs higher and higher, the rest of their companions also arrive at the docks. Ragnar greets each of them, but remains seated, entirely forgetting that he had wanted to get to know Surin and Kal better. Only when a crew member informs him that they are ready to cast off does Ragnar get up, take his things and board their ship. Once on the boat, he walks slowly and carefully to his room, puts down his things, sits down on the bed as there is no chair, and doesn't emerge for the rest of the voyage. The next few days are among the most miserable of his life. Although he never gets physically sick, he spends the entire voyage wishing he was. He doesn't even notice the storm until someone comes down to see how he is holding up; it all feels the same to him.

When they finally arrive in Arlest after what seems like years, he deliberately remains in his room until he is informed that they are tied up along the dock and can get off the boat. At that point, he grabs his things and immediately heads for solid ground, praising Heironeous with every thought.

From: Porter

Subject Music

Mund beams at the request for a song. He clomps up to the tiny raised stage at one end and pulls out his lute which was strapped to his back.

The lute is not a normal lute. Instead of a wooden body, it is made from a gourd with a skin stretched across it, much like a drum. This is a backwoods instrument which is common out here in the wildlands but which you would never find in a royal court.

The other patrons see him about to play and are not thrilled. They are all wise enough to keep their opinions to themselves.

He starts playing and singing a song with an enthusiastic gusto. But despite his confidence, the playing is not great. It's not good. It's not amature. It's not even bad. It is /horrible/.

What's worse is that he doesn't appear to realize that he's no good. Those who don't want to leave to escape the sound want to leave out of sheer embarrassment for Mund.

In the story of the song, the singer loses his ale, his dog, his horse, his armour, and his sword by the time the song is through. Mund then takes a bow and sits back down, still beaming from the chance to play for a new audience.

Ragnar follows the exchange outside the building with some interest, but says nothing. Once inside, he sits down with his ale in his hand and debates in his mind whether he should drink it. On the one hand, even the smell was threatening to make him as nauseous as he had been on the ship. On the other hand, it was all in his head, right? Its not like the water had actually lept up and attacked him. Ragnar had never in his life gotten completely wasted, but right then he felt he wanted to. Just forget about the entire journey. Without another thought, he downed his drink.

Seated directly across from Ragnar, Surin notices an odd look on Ragnar's face as he puts down his mug. Holding the edge of the table with both hands, Ragnar looks down toward the other end of the table and says "I think I'm not really that hungry after all..." Ragnar doesn't remember a thing about the performance, and he probably wouldn't have known if it were good or bad anyway, but from the looks on a few of the faces he hopes that Mund doesn't take his remark the wrong way.

When Mund finishes playing, Harp applauds with all his might. He has never heard such moving music. Harp has tried to pluck a few notes on the small travelling harp that he normally kept in his pack saddle, but he had never heard such music before. Here was a felllow warrior/minstrel. When Mund finishes, Harp will buy him another round of ale and ask him where he learned to perform so well. Harp may even suggest a duet, *if* the rest of the group requests it. If they don't then Harp may suggest it to Mund. No reason to pass up such a wonderful chance.

Dang! You beat me to it! I was writing this when your email came in:

Salix doesn't particularly dislike the music. While he can recognize that it isn't courtly music or that played in more refined halls, it is music nonetheless. (But then again Salix hears the braying of a donkey or the screech of a hawk as music too. Ears tuned to the greensong are apparently more inclusive than those which are not.)

Salix will applaud sincerely, if not as exuberantly as Harp. He'd be very interested in hearing a duet between the two for both the sound of it as well as the anthropological curiosity of such an event.

OOC: Sorry for the lateness of these replies. I have been crazy busy lately.

Ranthir awakes early and dresses quickly but carefully. He heads out to the city gardens where the flower market is and purchases a bouquet for Mira. He then hires a carriage to carry them to the wedding. When he arrives to collect Mira, she is just having the finishing touches done to her hair. Her red locks are pulled up with babys breath accents. Ringlets hang down on each side of her face. Ranthir hands the flowers to her and says "The flowers pale in comparison to your beauty."

Mira blushes and giggles at the comment. "Thank-you Ranthir, they are perfect." Mira is wearing a gorgeous jade green gown that matches her eyes. As the final pins are put into place in her hair she gets up and takes Ranthir's arm.

They are a little early yet so Ranthir offers the carriage driver some extra coin to take them the long way to the ceremony, back through the city gardens.

The wedding is beautiful. Ranthir introduces Mira to everyone and makes a little general small talk but most of his attention is on her.

Mira gasps at the wonderous appearance of Valorshield.

As Angelwing announces the plan to meet later, Ranthir looks to Mira. He pulls her aside and says to her "As you know I will be departing on a quest soon. It will be dangerous and I may not return. I am in good company and I believe we have a good chance of success. Know that if I do return, I will do so with the intention of finding you."

"I am still having strange difficulties. I don't know what is causing it but I believe it has something to do with those opposing us in our goals relating to the prophecy. From: Kevin

Subject The truth

I will???

OK, the real scoop. Mark hurt himself performing a perverse physical act that is banned in 7 states. This type of act would normally get him listed on the local governments "offenders" database but since the house is in his wife's name, local authorities have not been able to track him down yet.

The delay in seeking medical treatment is also related to this. Since doctors are required to notify authorities when these types of problems present themselves, Mark has to schedule the appointment under an assumed name. Since Deep Throat has recently been unmasked, he has to find a new alias. He would use my name, but since I am already in the database from an earlier time he used my name, that will not help him.

OK, now for the truth. He hurt his back while sneezing, just like Sammy Sosa did last year.

I say Harp and Mund have an arm wrestling contest.

If Mund gets to go Rage, Harp gets to cast Bulls Strength.

Forget about an arm wrestling match. Let's wrassle for real!

Mund knows an empty field where they can go wrassle.

Sounds like fun. I have a number of things to finish here at work.

Porter, if you want to write up a small portion getting us to a site, that would be fine. My idea is that this would be a freindly match of two strong guys trying to get a sense of each other. No major challenges, but some friendly boasting and then a "lets go see". Money may exchange hands.

I have to read up on the grapple rules tonight if you want to take it seriously, but I would rather just keep this kind of light.

Harp and Mund rumble, off to bed

From: Porter

Subject A Friendly rumble

After some good-natured ribbing and sizing up, Mund and Harp decide to take it outside. Mund leads the group to an open field where they both have room to move.

Mund takes off his armour and Harp does the same. Mund explains the ground rules. "Nothing that will leave a mark or hurt longer than a week [only subdual damage], and we yield if we get too tired [1/2 HP]. We don't want to bee too tired tommorow. Agreed?

Both agree and shake hands.

Mund raises his head and lets out an ugly yell. Some of the onlookers might recognize this scream. This is how elite bands of orc-raiders enter battle. It is said that this is how they are given strenght and fortutite from the evil orc-god Gruumsh. Indeed, Mund appears to grow stronger and more imposing. Mund looks at Harp, grins savagely, and advances. Harp dives at Mund's legs, trying to tackle him and take him down.

Round 1. Harp HP:47/47. Mund HP:58/58 (bonus HP for raging)

Initiative Harp: 4 + 6 = 10

Initiative Mund: 7 + 3 = 10

Initiative Order(Harp, Mund)

While Harp is coming in for the tackle, Mund tries to kick him in the shins (AoO).

(AoO - AC:12, 4+10=14, hit, damage:2+5=7 Harp HP=40/47)

(Harp's Grapple, Touch attack -- AC:15, 17+8=25, hit -- grab succesful).

(Maintain Hold -- Opposed Grapple Check (OGC) -- Harp:5+8=13 Mund: 2+10=12,success. damage:1+4=5 Mund HP:53/58).

Mund's kick connects, but leave him unbalanced. Harp mangages to completely lift him off the ground with his tack before landing full on him as he hits the ground. Mund tries to keep the momentum going and roll the orc off of him, but theHarp is just too stable.

(Escape from Grapple -- OGC -- Mund:4+10=14, Harp:7+8=15, failure).

Round 2. Harp HP: 40/47. Mund HP: 53/58

Harp drives his shoulder into Mund's chest, trying to squeeze the air out of him, while Mund tries to pin Har's left arm and leg, allowing him to flip him over and escape the crushing weight of the cleric.

(Harp: Damage Opponent -- OGC -- Harp: 5+8=13, Mund:11+10=21, fail)

(Mund: Escape -- OGC -- Mund: 12+10=22, Harp: 11+8+19, success)

Harp was so intent on doing damage to Mund that he didn't notice until it was too late that he couln't move his left arm or leg, allowing Mund to easily tip him over and roll away.

Round 3. Harp HP: 40/47. Mund HP: 53/58

Harp makes a standing grab, trying to wrap his arms around Mund's torso in a giant bear hug.

(Mund's AoO -- AC12, 20+30 hit, criticle threat: 4+10=14, hit, damage:1+5=7*2=14Harp HP:26/47)

(Grab:OGC: Harp: 14+8=22 Mund:12+10=22, fail)

Mund ducks under Harp's massive arms, delievering a punch to the stomach that completely takes the wind out of the orc as he does so. He spins behind Harp and delivers another blow to his kidneys.

(Mund's Unarmed Strike (US): AC:12, 2+10=12, hit. damage:3+5=8. Harp HP: 18/47)

Round 4. Harp HP: 18/47. Mund HP: 53/58

Harp reeling from the blow to his stomach, Harp goes down to one knee and bows his head in frustration. "I yield."

It almost looks like Mund didn't hear or understand and was going to attack Harp anyway, but he stops himself in time. The feral look in his eyes disappears, and a less primal and more congenial smile breaks out on his face. He goes over to Harp and helps him up. "That was pretty good, you big lug," he says as he rubs the bump he got on the back of his head from the tackle. "I thought you had me for a while there."

Mund leads the group back to the tavern and buys the whole group another round of drinks, glad that his new companions at least have a sense of fun.

Subject Rumble

Harp is humbled by this experience. He has been used to being the "big guy" on the training field. He had never lost a match like this, except to older, more experience warriors. This smaller man did not seem that old, or that strong, but he fought like a true warrior. He seemed to be able to drawn on some other power to make himself more powerful. Harp was a bit familiar with those feelings, but could not allow himself to be tempted by them. That wild way was the first step toward chaos in his life. He had to resist it. His training told him so.

Harp will clap Mund on the shoulder and say:

"Good fight. It has been a long time since someone has been able to best me. I look foward to drawing weapons at your side. Come, the next round is on me."

Subject A day in town

Mund motions for the party members to go into the inn. He bangs open the swinging shuttered doors and stomps into the common room. The rest of the party follows him in. Mund bellows at the innkeeper. "These are my friends. Take care of them or I will take it out of your hide." The innkeeper shouts right back and the two fall into what is an obvious pattern of insult and counter insult. They are all seated and food is served all around. It is decent food and the beer is good. Only Ragnar seems to not enjoy the food.

As they are talking Kal asks Mund about the instrument on his back. ""Alemunda, you're a musician? Elves have always been great appreciators of music; I would love to hear you perform." Before Mund can reply Allistair jumps in and also asks Mund to play. However the worried look on Allistair's face belies his request. Munds nods his approval and oblivious to the moaning sounds coming from the other patrons, unslings his "lute" and heads for the small stage. Allistair's fear is well founded. He had hoped that his brother had improved his musical ability over the years, but he had not. If anything he was worse. To complicate matters, Mund did not seem to notice how bad he was.

When Mund finishes, Allistair is surprised to hear some real applause from a few members of the party. The fact that Harp finds the music enjoyable is not too surprising, but Salix's approval stuns the young magic user. Harps approval of his brother's music amazes Allistair. Then he hears something almost as amazing. Harp is proposing a duet with Mund. Looking around for a way out he spots Ragnar. He had not knows too many dwarves, but he was fairly sure that a shade of green was not their normal color. "Are you feeling well, Brother Ragnar?" The stout dwarf nods at Allistair and motions him closer.

"Dwarves were not made for see voyages." The dwarf tells him. "I was hopping that a bit of food and ale would help, but I forgot how weak the beer is here. What I wouldn't do for a barrel of good dwarf ale. Listen, I can tell from watching you that staying here and listening to your brother pains you. I do not want to be the first to leave. How about if we take our leave together?" This strikes Allistair as a wonderful idea and the two make their excuses to the party and head back towards the rooms that have been prepared for them.

Over the next couple of hours the remaining party members spend time eating and talking. Harp and Mund have found much in common. At one point they even go outside for a wrestling match. Harp is surprised when Mund takes him down easily. It does ease Harp's mind a bit that the smaller man would be able to handle himself in a fight. Salix hands over a few gold pieces to Surin, obviously coming out on the wrong side of a bet with the halfling.

Lunch comes and goes as does dinner. It is just getting dark out when Ran goes over to Harp and whispers in his ear. Harp starts to object and Ran whispers one more word in his ear, this one a little louder than the others, loud enough for the other to hear: "Sergeant". Harp stops his protest at that and stands. "My friends, we have had a fun time today, but tomorrow we must be on our quest. Ran here has reminded me that an early start is easier if every one is in bed early. So I ask for every one to turn in so that we can be off early in the morn." With that Harp downs his nearly full ale and slams it on the table. Mund does the same while the others in the party finish their last drinks off a bit slower. Then it is off to bed.

OODM: That is all I can write for now. I will try and do some more tomorrow.

Harp heads for his room, somwhat ruffled by Ran's interference. He was just having a good time. What was so wrong with that? It was such a rare occasion for Harp. But then he remembered - they were on a quest of great importance to the Battle Lord. He should have kept that in mind. As Harp reaches his room, he grows somewhat remorseful of his lack of attention. He would have to pray to Heironious this night to ask for his strength in the coming challenges.

" Oh great Battle Lord, please forgive me my wayward activities this day. I failed to keep your greater good at the center of my heart. Thank you for the guidance you provided through my friend Ranthir. Help me to appreciate the good in all those who travel with me, and give me the wisdom to utilize their virtures to the betterment of our cause and to the detriment of those who oppose us. I thank you for giving me companions whose counsel I can trust and whose strenght I can rely on. I will do my best to bring glory to your name and success to this journey."

With that, Harp will retire to bed.

On the Road, Mark injured

From: Mark

Subject On the road

The night passes without incident. Just before dawn Salix makes the rounds, rousing the party members from their slumber. The innkeeper has a large hot breakfast ready, but a few of the party members find it hard to keep the food down. "Gather all your gear and meet me out side in 20 minutes. I have to go get the horses." The rest of the party heads to the rooms and finishes what little packing remains. At the time requested, they are all out front. Mund rides up with a string of horses, one for every party member and a pack horse.

"Quarion said that we were to be traveling light and that I did not need to provide any food. I hope he was right. I can feed myself out in the wilds but there is no way I am feeding you lot." Ragnar steps forward, patting a scroll case as his waist, "The Order will provide." Mund frowns at this, wondering what type of food a cleric could provide, and if it included any beer or ale. He smiles to himself, thinking of the wine skin loaded on his horse. The next half hour is spent loading the horses and getting the gear squared away. They draw a small crowd, but Mund is able to deflect most of the questions.

Mid morning sees the party off. Mund takes the lead. Harp asks Ranthir and Salix to bring up the rear and assigns the others to a defensive riding order, with Allistair being kept in the middle of the pack. Mund sets a brisk pace, but most of the party has been hardened by their travels over the past month or so. The mountains can be seen to the north, rising high and glistening with snow and ice. The first week passes with no serious problems. Occasional bandit parties spy on them, but decide to leave them alone, the party looking to be too big to pick off.

At noon each day Ragnar uses one of the scrolls the Order provided to create some fresh food and water for everyone and the horses. The left overs are packed up for the couple of meals. The food is filling but not all that tasty. After a couple of weeks every one is missing the rangers who used to supply the party with fresh meat when they were traveling. Salix does his best to keep the fare fresh but even he is stretched beyond what he can do.

Their path starts to wind up into the hills. They meet up with the Rushing River after three days and start to follow its course towards the mountains. Mund spends a lot of each day practicing on his lute and telling tales about the lands about them. After two weeks of traveling, the party is just now starting to get into the heavily wooded foothills of the mountains. "Now we leave the easy path and start making our way across open land. The going will be slower, but basically we head north."

OODM: Any conversation you want to happen let me know.

Next week the fun starts.

Unlike the rest of the party, Mund doesn't ride on his horse. His horse is a beautiful heavy war-horse, but he has it loaded up like a pack horse. Being on foot doesn't slow down the party, however, as he is easily able to keep pace with the slow pony that Surin is riding.

Although he made a big deal of not feeding the entire party, Mund seems to try to do it anyway. He and Salix occasionally bring in traditional fare, but Mund frequently kills, eats, and shares with anybody interested more "interesting" critters -- squirils, sparrows, rats, and even a fox.

Seriously, his disk is causing him some serious pain, though it gives him a reason to take some really cool drugs. He meets with a specialist later this week, and any turns he produces will likely be the product of slave labor. If anyone has the time or desire to add some role playing color (a vivid dream on Mark's halfing character in his other game being brutally abused after she is dead comes to mind) be Mark's guest.

Harp agrees with Mund, but feels that a nice bout of spinal expansion would do wonders for the DM. Somewhat like the rack, but without the pleasure of having a hard surface to lay down on. This stretching should release most of the pressure allowing the disk to slip back into place. Of course, the resulting separated shoulder and other broken bones may cause an equal amount of pain elsewhere, but those can also be treated.

Harp also has have special training as a chiropractor. Let him start manipulations now. He will need to see you three times a week for 8 weeks, or until your insurance runs out.

From: Mark

Subject Up in to the hills

OODM: Hi this is Geoff. I'm writing today for an irritable and crippled DM who is standing behind me griping. Any errors are not my fault. I am hoping that he can manage to get an encounter of his own devising straight, instead of thoroughly messing my own up. Remember to look on the positive side: your next characters will have their first major role playing experience when they find the corpses of your current ones.

To recap, the party is now 4 weeks out of Gorn, two weeks on the waves and two weeks on the road. They have another two weeks to get to the head waters of the Rushing River. Mund has been leading them along the path of the river, never more than several miles from the banks. As they head towards the mountains the river channel becomes steeper and more dangerous to be near, so the party stays a bit away, but the river can easily be heard. The terrain has been getting generally rougher, with trees becoming more dense and with more undergrowth, the path becoming harder and harder to find.

Because of the thickening trees they are having to lead their mounts more and more often, making less and lees progress every day. The air also becomes less hospitable as they progress, getting cooler in the day and closer to a frost each night. However, Mund is able to find marginally more comfortable and sheltered areas in which to spend the night.

The weather ranges between bright and crisp and overcast and cloudy but with very little rain. As the day progresses Salix begins to get an odd felling but he cannot place its source. For the next several hours Salix is distracted, trying to find the source of his disquiet. As it approaches early evening, while the party is searching for a place to bed for the night, Salix approaches Mund to discuss the odd felling he's had all day. (Spot check DC20, 19+7=26 success)

"Mund," Salix says "Would you mind if I spoke with you for a few minutes?" Mund nods, and Salix continues. "Something has been bothering me for the past couple of hours, and I have finally realized what it is. I have not seen any large animals, predator or prey, all day. I know I am not from this area, but that strikes me as odd. What is your opinion?" Mund nods, surprised that this outlander had picked up on the very same thing that had been bothering him. "Yep," he replies "haven't heard any either." (Listen check DC25, 19+9=28, success)

"Oh, so what do you think we should do about this?" Salix inquires. Mund grunts in resignation. "Not much we can do about it. Just keep movin' and keep our eyes peeled. Tell the rest of 'em to do the same." As they make camp for the night, Salix and Mund tell the others about their worries, Harp first.

OODM: Ok guys let me know what the party wants to do? They are in a small clearing about a mile from the river. It is early evening, but night is coming on fast.

Subject Up in to the hills

Harp will listen to Salix's concerns, and will take those concerns seriously. He has come to respect the Druid, especially when it comes to being out in the open. When Salix is done discussing his concerns, Harp will ask Mund to join them.

" Mund, I am glad that you and Salix have brought this to my attention. I think this is cause to start a double watch. With Ran's help, I would like to set a watch schedule that takes use of our inborn skills."

OOC: Mark and Geoff, I am thinking that Ragnar and Harp will take the deep night shifts, since they have dark vision. Ran and Salix would take first and last shift as their lowlight vision should suffice. I will suggest Alastair take the first watch and have Surin and Mund split with Harp and Ragnar since they will have better skills at hearing something. Maybe Mund with Harp and Surin with Ragnar. You get the gist, and have approval to play with it some.

IC: "Salix, I hestitate to ask this of you, but would you mind asking Noctis if he would do us the favor helping to help keep patrol at night? I have come to learn that he is a valuable member of our team. If you could give him some simple signals so that if he sees something, he can give us a basic warning. I miss our feathered friends from our first adventure.

Mund, Salix, have either of you ever heard of anything that might drive off the large predators?"

Harp will also ask this of the larger group. Mund and Salix are the most knowledgable in this area, but you never know who might remember something.

OOC: Welcome Geoff. Keep up the good work and I will not whine at you too much.
