Turn, band and round 1

From: Mark

Subject Turn

It will be tonight before I get a turn out today.

The new band parents meeting ran almost 4 hours last night and I did not get home until almost 10PM.

Sorry.

From: Kevin

Subject Band

So, what did you do from 10 pm until midnight?

I stayed up checking my e-mail every 10 minutes waiting for a turn. NOT.

From: Porter

Subject Band

So, what are the little chit'lins gonna play?

From: Ashley

Subject Band

Band was one of the most positive experiences I had in Jr High and High School. I hope your kids get a kick out of it. :)

From: Derek

Subject Band

Band was not one of the most positive experiences I had in Jr and High school, but in general Jr. and High school were not positive experiences for me so band doesn't really stick out as being worse than the rest. Thinking back, I was probably only in band because most of my friends were in it and I didn't really have anything better to do. My parents weren't in the band boosters either, I guess they shared my enthusiasm. Porter was a lot more serious about it than me, actually having a music scholarship when he went to college.

From: Porter

Subject Band

Small correction: While I was offered a music scholarship to go to OU, it wasn't as good as the academic scholarship I was offered, and I didn't accept either of them, because I took the crappy scholarship that BYU offered me.

But yeah, I really enjoyed band, except for marching band, and I'm really glad I did it. I continued playing through college.

From: Mark

Subject Band

Tuba.

both of them. One is only in 6th grade, but they both play tuba. Not piccilo, not flute, but two full size tubas.

From: Mark

Subject Band

The wife was a band buddy so Geoff is a band buddy. Sean, the youngest, is not sure yet.

Geoff also plays in several orchestras as well. He has several close friends from middle school who are starting in the marching band with him.

I look forward the band getting him in shape.

From: Mark

Subject Turn

Sorry I have not gotten the turn out yet. There has been a tornado warning in the area and the wife made me go downstairs.

I am working on it now.

From: Mark

Subject 10 foot reach

You are effectivly correct as to the squares they can reach.

From: Mark

Subject Ran's move

actually from where Ran is he would move a 5 foot step to T2 to get the best position and still get his two attacks.

From: Mark

Subject round 1 actions

Allistair does not know what they are, but recognizes the name that Salix calls out. However, I am going to say that there are too many bodies in the way for Allistair to target inside the room at the moment.

From: Mark

Subject Round 1

Round 1 Initiative: Mund (21), Harp (18), Salix (18), Surin (17), T1-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9)

Seeing the crowd in front of him, Mund decides to hold off and see what happens. He keeps his bow in his hand, arrow nocked and ready to go.

This time Harp is not caught flat footed. Hearing Surin's grunt of surprise and seeing its cause, he grabs the halfling and pulls him back. As he pulls the halfling the two creatures claw at Surin. The first (T1) ones claw rakes at the halfling, but his metal rivets on his studded leather armor deflect the claw (AOO, AC20, 10+9=19,miss), and Surin is able to jump back and avoid the second claw (T2) (AC, 20, 6+9=15,miss). As Harp moves up nest to the door he shouts "Kal and Ran, flank on the other side of the door. Ragnar, you hold them where you are."

Salix sees his friend dodge the things long arms and recognizes the monsters for what they are (Knowledge check, nature, DC15, 5+11=16, success). "Trolls" he shouts. "Strong, stupid and very hard to kill. You have to knock them unconscious and then cut their heads off." Salix then chants the summoning prayer and a hippogriff appears between the two trolls near the door and the three in the back. It immediately attacks one of the nearer trolls (T2) (AC16, 3+6=9,miss). However its claw skitters off the tough hide of the monster.

Surin's look of surprise is still on his face when Harp pulls him back from the door. Dodging the attacks from the creatures, Surin almost yells at Harp. Big oaf, you almost got me killed. But when Harp steps up next to the door to stand in the way, Surin rethinks that. Noticing that he still has a direct shot at one of the trolls (T2), Surin decides to do what he can. As he takes a step back from those long arms, his axe appears in his hand like magic. With a flick of the wrist, it is sailing at the things head. It ducks at the last moment, but the axe slams against its shoulder (AC16, 18+11=29, hit, damage 1). It falls to the ground with a clatter.

The two trolls at the door roar at each other and one finally pushes his way past the other (T1). As it muscles its way through the door the hippogriff at its back strikes out with a claw (AOO,AC16, 9+6=15, miss) but it is unable to penetrate the thick hide again. The troll, not even noticing the attack from its back, strikes out at Ragnar with its own sharp claws (AC26, 14+9=23, miss). Long forgotten racial memories seep into Ragnar as he dodges instinctively and catches the claw on his shield.

It is hard to see through all the bodies but Salix can just barely see as one of the trolls (T5) tears the hippogriff to pieces, (two claws, one bite, all hit, rend attack, damage 41). The other troll mill around trying to get around the one blocking the door.

Ran hears Harps command and takes a quick step to the right and forward, moving so that the thing can not take advantage of his movement. As the troll (T1) strikes at Ragnar Ranthir's sword lashes out in two quick strikes (AC16, 18+11=29,hit, damage 10, 20+6=26, hit, critical threat, critical threat roll, AC16, 1+6=7,miss, no critical, damage 11). Green blood wells from two deep cuts on the trolls chest.

Ragnar, orcish curses spilling from his mouth, steps forward and attacks the troll with all his might (AC16, 18+10, 28, hit, damage 11). His sword also cuts deeply on the trolls arm, almost severing the hand at the wrist.

Something clicks inside Allistair's head when he hears Salix yell out trolls. Fire. They hate fire. And here he was with a couple of fireballs but too many people in the way. Well he still had his mage arrow spell, so chanting that, the same three bolts of force leap from his hand and strike the first troll in the chest (Damage 10). The holes smoke a bit but stop faster then one would expect.

Kal, having cast the strength spell before Surin opened the door, also follows Harps' command, seeing the advantage of having people on both sides of the doorway. Taking a quick step between the troll and Ranthir, the elf turns and thrusts with his rapier. Its sharp point sinks into the spongy flesh (AC16, 5+14=19, hit, damage 9). When he pulls it out, the wound seems to almost close over as soon as the point is out.

OODM: End round 1, I need round 2 actions.

Round 2 actions, Mund, Prestige classes, out of town

From: Jason

Subject Round 2 actions

Ragnar will keep up the taunting and the attacking both.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 2 actions

"Allistair, if you see a chance - one of those fireballs of yours on those things in the other room would really be helpful"

OOC: Mark, is dragging/moving an object a move action or standard action?

With that, Harp will attack the troll in front of him again.

From: Mark

Subject Round 2 actions

Depending on the size it may be both, but at least a move action.

However, moving something like a troll body, which weighs in at 500 lbs or so, would be a full round action that would provoke an AOO if in a threatened square. Also, it would require 2 hands to get a good grip.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 2 actions

My question was more would it take the place of a standard action. If I remember correctly, I get 1 standard and 1 move, or 2 moves.

Harp can lift off the ground 600 lbs, and can push/drag 1,500 lbs., so 500 he can do. All I am looking at Harp reaching down with one hand, grabbing the troll and pulling it back and to the side so someone else can cut its head off.

Of course, now that I think about it more, it is still a large creature, and I probably do not have the space behind me to do that.

OK, forget that.

Next.

From: Karl

Subject Round 2 actions

It's not down yet, right?

From: Mark

Subject Round 2 actions

Correct, it is not down yet. Harp's owner is counting his trolls before they hatch.

From: Porter

Subject Mund

Why wasn't Mund able to get in a shot with his bow? He's got a straight shot, and he was waiting for an opening.

From: Mark

Subject Mund

It would have lowered your initiative score down to after Kal's since your shot would not have been clear until Kal moved out of the way.

However, since Mund is first in the list, he will get a clear shot at the start of next round.

From: Porter

Subject Mund

That's exactly what I wanted to happen -- wait for a shot, and take it when he can.

Can we retcon so that happens?

From: Mark

Subject Mund

You understand that Mund will now be last in the order for the rest of the combat, instead of first?

From: Porter

Subject Mund

I do. :)

From: Mark

Subject Mund

Ok I will add his attack on first thing tonight.

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

Great. Now that Mund is (conveniently) at the the end of the initiative order:

If the troll is still up, he shoots an arrow (or two?) at it.

If the troll is down, he'll draw his axe, rage, and step up into the open space at T3.

From: Mark

Subject Round 2 actions

Well the troll is still up, at least until Mund shoots his arrows. It may not be after he shoots. I will see tonight.

If Mund shoots two arrows, that is a full attack action and takes a full round. Mund can rage but not move this round.

If he shoots one arrow he can rage and move.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 2 actions

You will notice that I did not write up that Harp tried to move the damn thing. I am just trying to make sure that I understand a not commonly used section of the rules.

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

Um, I was actually talking about round 2. But you make a good point, that possibly Mund will drop the troll with an arrow at the end of round 1.

Is it possible to have Mund shoot one arrow, see if he drops, and shoot another arrow if he doesn't, and move in if he does?

From: Mark

Subject Round 2 actions

Yes, that is one of the things I was talking about when I asked people to give me contingincies.

So Mund shoots one arrow. If the thing does not drop he shoots another arrow. If the thing does drop he drops his bow and pulls his axe as he rages and moves into position.

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

Right. And I want this to apply to both round 1 and 2. :)

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actoins

Actually, here's what I want to happen (on both turns):

If at any time there's either no troll standing in the opening, or if there is a troll who has already used his AOO, Mund will rage and step forward into the gap.

Otherwise, he'll keep shooting with arrows.

Basically, since Mund is so low in HP, he doesn't want to risk the AOO which would happen by advancing into the open spot, but he'd like to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with everybody else in hacking this thing to death.

From: Derek

Subject Round 2 actions

OOC: OK, I really have no idea waht is going on right now, but Allistair's possible actions are rather limited, so I guess it doesn't matter.

IC: Allistair will move around, trying to get to a spot where he can see in the room and shoot a fireball. He'll move anywhere that doesn't put him in danger of being hit by these trolls.

From: Ashley

Subject Round 2 actions

Surin is relieved to see that his hit did at least some damage to the troll, and could avoid them with some relative ease. He looks for any weak spot on the huge creature that could make it fall easier.

OOC: If there's any way for Surin to get in a flanking position without getting killed, he'll go for a sneak attack. Harp, being Harp, is in the way, but if there's some other way to get in position he'll do it. Would it be possible to go behind Harp and still be in a position to do anything to the troll?

From: Mark

Subject Round 2 actions

There is a very hurt troll halfway through the door. It has Kal and Ran on one side, Harp on the other and Ragnar in front of it. Salix, Surin and Allistair are back more than 10 feet so that it can not reach them. Mund is next to them, shooting arrows and getting ready to move up next to Ragnar if the oppertunity presents itself.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 2 actions

OOC: Excellent recap of the action so far.

However, the group knows (from Salix's comment) that if the troll goes down, they have to cut off it's head to keep it down. We don't know how long it will stay down before it gets up. We do not know what the brown thing is back in the room (probably some temple to the troll gods granting them extra regeneration). They also know that fire will hurt the trolls more so than normal weapons.

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

If Alley lets his brother know what he wants, Mund could move out of the way so that he can shoot a fireball in.

From: Mark

Subject Round 2 actions

Well the one advantage is that flanking only requires some one else to be on the other side. So Surin could move next to Harp and have Ran supply the flanking bonus to Surin.

Only Ragnar, and maybe Mund will not have flanking bonuses.

From: Derk

Subject Round 2 actions

OOC: Good idea.

IC: Allistair shouts: "Somebody give me an opening so that I can shoot a fireball in there!"

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

OK, let me change my earlier actions.

During round 1:

If Mund can still move five feet after shooting two arrows, he'll do so, and then move five feet to the north to make room for his brother.

If he can't still move five feet after shooting two arrows, he'll only shoot one and then move five feet to the north to make room for his brother.

During round 2:

If Mund can still shoot from V2, he'll do so. Otherwise, he'll play bodyguard for his brother.

From: Kevin

Subject Prestige classes

Isn't there a "prestige" class where there are 2 related classes? One is a tracker/rogue type the other is a fighter/rogue type. They are sort of designed to work together.

You two should try that some time.

From: Porter

Subject Prestige classes

I have no idea what you are saying. Was that a joke? Are you talking about rangers?

From: Kevin

Subject Prestige classes

There is in one of the extra D&D books (Complete Warrior, Complete Arcane, etc.) or one of the other supplemental books (I can't remember which one) where there is a "prestige" class where there are two types who are designed to work closely together. They are designed to track down and take out people who have violated a group or organization (again, this is from memory). Some of thier base skills complement each other and, while they can work well on their own, they get some kind of synergies working together. There was no slight intended. I wish Mark and I could do a couple of characters that had some type of link that would let them work together very closely (like right now, he is thinking " I wish my POS brother would shut up and stop confusing people". Right, Mark???

I think it would be fun to watch Mund and Allistair spend some time learning how to work together to maximizes each others skills and abilities.

From: Randy

Subject Round 2 actions

If the troll is still alive Ran will full attack. If it is dead, he will attempt to decapitate it. If it is already decapitated, he will call out "Leave the body there! Make them come to us!"

From: Porter

Subject Round 2 actions

Ah.

From memory, there's a knife fighter/sorcer-wizard class, and there's a knif fighter/druid class, and those two work together.

In 2E, a friend and I designed a RandLand Warder system for fighters (well, anybody really) and wizards. We made it very similar to the familiar rules. We made Bond Warder a third-level spell, very similar to the 1st-level spell Find Familiar.

From: Karl

From: Derek

Subject Round 2 actions

If he has flaming sphere left, that could be really useful in this battle.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 2 actions

He does not (sacraficed for the hippogriff that got torn up), but he has one that will work even better for out need - Produce flame. It creates a flame in his hand - it lasts for 1 min/lvl, does 1d6+1 per casted level (max +5 so Salix will do the +5 so he will do at least 6pts of damage). Fire, water, round 2

From: Mark

Subject Turn

Sorry I did not get anything out last night.

I will get something out today.

I just want to make sure I am clear.

Harp, Kal, Ran and Ragnar are going to attack until the thing is down. Allistair will try and get a fireball through the door, if possible. Salix is going to try and make sure that if the troll goes down, it is going to stay down. Surin is thinking of moving in to look for a sneek attack.

Mund is going to be shooting his bow unless he is needed to fill a hole in the line.

I mis-interpreted how Produce Flame would affect the trolls. The flame would have to do the trolls full hp to truly kill it. Decapitate is the only way to kill, unless Allistair can get some really good FB on them.

Mund will not be trying to plug the hole at this time. Mund realizes that he's more useful doing nothing and letting his brother do his thing than attacking and getting in the way. He'll shoot his bow as is possible, but making sure that his brother has the best line-of-sight.

Also, remember that Mund gets to retroactively attack during turn 1.

Fire and acid can not be regenerated. However, Kevin is thinking of Baldur's Gate.

In that game, you could take a troll to under 0 HP and then do 1 point of fire damage and kill it for good.

In the real game system, you would have to do enough fire damage to equal its total HP to kill it.

From: Mark

Subject Water

Have you got that much water on you? :)

The regeneration rules say that regeneration does not work againts HP lost due to exposure and lack of food/water, so I guess you could suffocate or drown them. However, I would follow the usual rules for either option, with them regenerating HP not lost due to these factors. They would also get the saves normally due to them in these situations, and they have a high CON value and Fort save.

Subject Round 2

Round 1 Initiative: Mund (21), Harp (18), Salix (18), Surin (17), T1-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9)

As Kal steps out of the way Mund realizes that he has a clear shot at the monster. His bow arm locks in place and the arrow is back by his bottom lip almost before he knows it. With the practiced ease that comes from years of hunting the barbarian sights down the shaft and releases. Somehow Mund misses even at this short range (AC16, 2+11=13, miss). Cursing under his breath Mund pulls another arrow from his quiver and has the string back in a heart beat. His second arrow also goes wide (AC16, 6+6=12, miss) clattering against the stone wall next to the monster, the wooden splinters showering down on Kal

Round 2 Initiative: Harp (18), Salix (18), Surin (17), T1-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Harp takes advantage of Kal flanking the monster and lays into it with his sword again (AC16, 14+14=28, hit, damage 13). His sword cuts deep into the things thigh, more green blood spurting from the wound.

Salix realizes that someone will have to behead the creatures once they are down or they will start getting up. With the troll that the party is fighting now looking very cut up, Salix moves forward, drawing his scimitar as he goes. Moving around Ragnar and next to Harp he tries to duck as the troll claws at him (AC17,17+9=26, hit, damage 12). The sharp talons cut through the leather armor and almost penetrate the padding beneath. Gasping for breath he tells Harp and Ragnar "Keep them off of me. I'll cut their heads off when they fall." He then waits for the thing to die(Readied action).

Surin, another axe already in his hand is just barely able to stop himself before he throws. Damn it Salix, you almost got a splitting head ache the halfling thinks. Trying to find a better location, Surin moves to the right, keeping plenty of distance from the trolls.

The troll turns and claws at Ranthir, the source of his most pain. The claws lash out (AC21, 15+9=24, hit, 16+9=25,hit, damage 41) and both pierce the fine chain mail armor. The long arms of the troll bulge and rip away at the flesh beneath, rending flesh. Ranthir almost passes out from the pain as his chest is almost torn open. He keeps enough sense about him to pull his head back as the thing tries to bite out his throat (AC21, 6+4=10,miss). The other trolls roar in the background, calling out curses in some vaguely familiar language.

Ran, reeling from the pain, swings his sword at the arms holding him. His sword, enhanced by the prayers of the clerics, severs the arm (AC16,15+11=26,hit, damage 11) of the monster at the elbow. The creature's eyes roll up in the back of it's head and it crashes to the floor. Ranthir, grasping for breath, steps back, yelling "Mund, get up here. I'm hurt bad. Take my place." The fighter fumbles at the pouch at his waist, looking for the healing potion he knew was there.

Ragnar is torn between keeping his place and blocking the advance of any of the other trolls if they try and get through or going to help Ranthir. Looking around quickly and noticing that Allistair would have a clear shot at the troll if he moved, the dwarf does. Stepping to the right, he shouts at the mage "Allistair, fireball, right through here, before they get a chance to attack.

Allistair hardly needs Ragnar suggestion. He had been moving around, trying to find an opening. Ragnar's moving to the side allows Allistair to take one step to the side and chant the fireball spell. Trying to get the most bang for his spell, he targets where three of them are grouped together. He finishes the chant and the spark leaps from his hand and flies true. A silent explosion goes off and the three are engulfed in flames (REF save, DC16, T3 13+4=17, save, T4 6+4=10, fail, T5 17+4=21, save,Damage T3 10, T4 20, T5 10). The smell of burning flesh fills the air.

Kal wants to charge the trolls but realizes that with Ranthir hurt as badly as it seemed Harps plan of having the door control how many trolls they have to fight is a good one. However, with no foe in front of him, he decides to do some damage anyway. Chanting the mage arrow spell, he points his rapier at the closest of the three trolls in the middle of the room (T5 ). Three bolts of energy fly from the tip of the weapon and strike the thing in its still smoldering chest (Damage 9).

Mund was just getting ready to set another arrow to the bow when he sees Ranthir almost get disemboweled by the trolls. How could he live through that. He is even more amazed when Ran kills the creature while it is trying to rip him in half. The fighter stumbles back, blood pouring from the gaping wound in his belly, commanding Mund to take his place. Mund drops his bow and starts to move forward. As he pulls his axe free, he sees Ragnar step over towards where Ran was and Ally throw one of those ballfire spells. It makes a lot of flash but none of the trolls fall. Mund then notices that there is an almost open path from the trolls to his brother. He moves up to the left of Ragnar, filling the spot.

T1.

It was the only one partly through the door.

I have not removed it because, in the words of St. Monty, it's not quite dead yet.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 3 actions

Not only that, but once it is finally, truly really dead, it will still make a good sized barrier in the doorway. I mean, it is 9 ft tall (not quite so tall when its dead) and it weighs in at 500 lbs (minus the head shortly) so it will make movement throught the area somewhat difficult.

Mark, I want to discuss Salix's move actions last turn. I thought I had said that Salix was going to try and avoid an attack of opportunity by waiting until the troll went down. If it had not gone down by his turn, he could have moved as he did, but not moved into that last square that caused the AOO. He could still this turn take a 5 ft. step and still performed a full round action (coup de grace) on the downed troll. Please consider this.

From: Mark

I will look at it. As we are playing the RL game tonight it will be tomorrow before I can make the change.

I do not specifically recall your saying he would wait until the thing fell to move or only take a 5 foot step.

Subject Potions and scrolls

Mark, who has what healing potions or scolls (I think we are done with those)?

From: Mark

Subject Potions and scroll

I think there are at least a couple more scrolls.

Origianlly Ragnar had given every one a potion to every one and kept the two extras himself.

Salix and Allistair used their two potions when they were hurt by the manitores. I would assume that Ragnar would give them the two extra potions at that time. Ragnar used two potions on Ranthir and one on Kal just before this battle, so there have been a total of 5 used.

I will have to rewrite Ran's turn, since it is likely that he did not have a potion. Of course he could still be grabbing at it but not finding it.

I would say Kal, Ragnar and Ranthir do not have potions. All the rest would have a CLW potion.

From: Randy

From: Randy

OOC: I'll revise this since Ranthir does not have a potion.

Ranthir, reeling with pain, reaches for his potion. Realizing that the potion is gone, he curses, not sure if it is out loud or only in his head. He drops his sword and grabs for his crossbow. He moves past Surin and sets himself up beside Allistair, taking shots with his crossbow when he can.

From: Porter

How does line-of-sight work? Can Allistair get a shot in through the dialogonal T2? You had Mund fill in the hole, but I specifically said that Mund was going to make sure he didn't block Allistair.

From: Mark

Subject Line of site

I will allow things like kneeling down so that someone behind you can do something, like fire off a fireball.

I moved Mund because the trolls are going to realize that Ally is the one throwing fire around. That makes him their number one target. T5 saw the fire ball come straight at him from Ally.

I will check the map but my guess is that Ally can not see T2 yet. Remember that Mund and Ally act after the creatures in the INIT order.

Ally can not cast a spell behind the trolls if one is in the doorway. The thing blocks too much of it. Especially with all the people around it.

From: Porter

Is there any way any of the trolls could have gotten to Allistair, as long as the fighters didn't break rank and open more than a 5' gap?

But as long as Mund can duck down and give his brother a chance to blow stuff up, I'm fine with Mund being up on the front line.

Subjet: Round 3 actions

If Harp has a potion, he will pull it free and give it to Salix (who is next to him) and tell Salix to go help Ran after he kills the troll. This should be a move action. He will also ready an attack when a troll gets in range (standard action, lowering his initiative to being just before the trolls in the future).

Salix should be able to take the potion as a free action. He will try to decapitate the downed troll. If you have retconed this, then he will take a 5 ft step up to the troll and coup de grace/decapitate it. If you decide to leave the past turn as is, he will decapitate it and then take a 5 ft step back.

Does the fact that this is a full round action mean that if another troll moves up to be within 10 ft, it will get an AOO? Is there anyway that Harp or Ragnar can help protect Salix while not giving up their normal attacks? We cannot "aid" another since we are not in a position to attack the other foe until it comes up. Oh well, do you want to live forever?

Seeing that Mund has stepped forward and should be able to keep the trolls from reaching Allistair, Ragnar gives in to his instinct to help Ran. Shouting for Mund to hold them back for just a moment, he turns to the critically wounded fighter and asks for his most powerful blessing (Sacrifice Dispel Magic for CSW), while keeping an eye out behind him to make sure that no troll sneaks up behind him while he prays.

/ooc: I'd like Ragnar to only take a 5' step, and cast his spell defensively to avoid an attack of opportunity. If Ran has backed too far away, he'll stick around, attack any trolls that come out, and try to draw their attacks towards him.

From: Mark

Since Salix and Harp act before the trolls no AOO should happen. Salix's full round action ends before the trolls get their actions.

From: Ashley

Subject Round 3 actions

OOC: Here's the world according to me: Mund, Harp, and Salix are all in a position to coup de grace T1 (though Salix seems the one to actually do it) so I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that it'll be dead by Surin's turn. Surin himself can't do a CdG because he's over ten feet away. If Salix kills it Surin's turn would be a bit of downtime before the other trolls can take *their* turn and come into the doorway.

I think Surin should have a potion on hand, so he could hand it over to Ran, who's pretty close to him, quite easily. If he has any action left he'll move to Kal's left side to wait for the chance to sneak attack the next troll to come in. Ba da bing, ba da boom.

Kal's just going to sit back and wait for an opportunity to do some damage. If the troll in front of us isn't dead by his turn, he'll try to finish it off. (If there's another troll within attacking range Kal will apply his +1AC dodge bonus to that one and hope the AOO doesn't kill him).

If the troll's dead and there's another one near the door that Kal can attack, he will.

Otherwise he'll just magic missle the same one as before.

From: Porter

OOC: A tiny bit of retconning -- I appreciate that you had Mund jump into the hole, but I would have definitely had him rage first.

Subject Round 3

Retcon from round 2.

Salix realizes that someone will have to behead the creatures once they are down or they will start getting up. With the troll that the party is fighting now looking very cut up, Salix moves forward, drawing his scimitar as he goes. Moving cautiously, he closes some of the ground between himself and the monster. He positions himself so that he can but the head off the thing if and when it falls.(Move to U5)

Round 3 Initiative: Harp (18), Salix (18), Surin (17), T2-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Harp's joy at watching the first troll fall is short lived when he sees that there are 4 more of the monsters still to go. Luckily they have the advantage of position. However Ranthir was seriously hurt and needed healing. Motioning Salix to come forward and decapitate the troll in front of them, he grabs the healing potion at his waist and hands it to the druid as Salix comes forward. "Get this to Ran after you kill the troll. We need his sword." Harp then readies himself for when the next troll moves to attack.

Salix nods as he efficiently cuts the head from the troll. Green ichor spurts from the neck and the eyes flutter briefly, as if the thing was about to wake up, even with all the gaping wounds. He then looks up and sees the glowing green eyes of the other trolls advancing on the party.

While this is happening, Surin sees Ranthir back away from the fight, holding his belly. The halfling can see blood and entrails seeping from between the fighters hands. Surin does not hesitate. "Take this. Looks like you need it more than I do." Handing Ranthir his potion, the halfling then moves over behind Kal. "Hey, Kal. Move over a bit, would you. Maybe I can hit the thing in the back when it comes through."

The troll just across from the door roars at the pain from Allistair's fire ball and runs full speed at Mund and Ragnar (Bull Rush). As the thing clears the door jam the waiting party members fall on it like an avenging sword. (AOO,AC16, Harp 6+14=20, hit, damage 6, Kal, 3+14=17,hit, damage 12, Mund, 6+13=19, hit, damage 10,Ragnar, 1+10=11, auto miss, Salix, 18+6=24, critical threat, crit threat roll, AC16, 12+6=18, critical hit, damage 4). Amazingly the creature is still standing although body parts lie all over the floor. The creatures bulk starts to push Mund back but the monster is not able to budge the dwarf (Bull rush 3+6=9 vs. 4+7=11, fail). Ragnar snarls, digs his heels in and pushes back, forcing the troll back from him and Mund.

Harp, ready for the charge of the troll, strikes again as the thing passes (AC16, 20+14=34, hit, critical threat, crit threat roll, AC16, 12+14=26, hit, critical hit, damage 17). Harp's swing cuts the legs out from under the thing and it falls to the ground.

Ran grabs at his waist, desperate to find the healing potion that is supposed to be there. He panics for a second when he remembers using it before the battle, but Surin's quite voice brings him back to himself. He hears the halfling saying something about needing something and before he can process it the little one is gone. However there is something smooth and cold in his hand. The 1/2 elf looks down and there one of the potions. Too grateful to question, Ran pulls the stopper with his teeth and swallows the sweet liquid (heal 10). The burning pain in his belly softens just a bit. Ran is able to look up and sees Ragnar hold the troll back and Harp cut it down.

Ragnar uses his sword to cut the head from the second troll piled in front of him(Coup De Grace). As he looks up he sees another troll charging the party. He is just barely able to stand in time to catch the thing on his shield (T4, bull rush, 6+6=12, 15+7=22, fail) Again the dwarf is able to fend off the rushing attack of the troll and keep it from getting any further in to the room.

Allistair sees that there is no open shot for this fireball so he chants for another mage arrow. Three bolts of energy streak from his fingers again and find their target (Damage 12).

Kal's rapier darts in (AC16, 20+14=34, hit, critical threat, critical threat roll, AC16, 14+14, 28, hit, damage 16) and buries his rapier in the trolls side up to the hilt. Trying to damage some vital organ, the elf twists the blade as he pulls it out, green blood pouring from the wound.

Mund, his eyes blazing, swings his axe in a full circle, just clearing Ragnar's helm. The axe blade bites (AC16,14+13=27, hit, damage 7) deep into the trolls chest. Pulling the blade back, he twirls it and cuts down again (AC16, 17+8=25,hit, damage 11), this time catching the troll in the middle of its head. The skull cracks and Mund and see what looks like brains through the gaping wound. However, the troll does not die.

Subject Round 4 actions

Harp watches as the melee grows more intense. He is amazed at Ragnar's ability to withstand the onslaught of the trolls, pushing one back after another. He was doing exactly what Harp had hoped - only better. He hoped that he had not put too much on the shoulders of the dwarf. The best thing Harp could do was to take down this troll in front of him. These things were not that hard to hit, but they sure were big and strong. With that, Harp takes another swing at the troll in front of him.

OOC: Mark, I do not know if Karl is back yet, so I am writing an action for Salix. If Karl is back, he can override this.

Two down, three to go, Salix thinks to himself. He had ended the threat from the first troll to fall, and Ragnar had taken care of the second one. Now he had two options - wait here and try to do some damage, or withdraw and see what help he could give to Ran. Ran was the better fighter, and it looked like Harp and the others had these things bottled up pretty well. If he was carefull, he could get over to Ran and help him get back in this fight. OOC: Salix will ready use Total Defense as his standard action and ready a move action for when the troll at the door falls. He will move over to where Ran is (or as close as he can get). Does that make sense?

Subject Round 4

Round 4 Initiative: Surin (17), Salix (15),Harp (15) T2-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Surin stands behind Kal hoping that the elf will move and give Surin the better position.

Salix sees that Harp and the others seem to have things well in hand and waits for the troll in front of them to fall before heading over to help Ranthir. He grasps the healing potion in his hand and does his best to make sure the he is ready if the troll attacks him.

Harps confidence grows as another of the trolls falls. Although he is still worried about how Ran is doing he turns his attention back to the troll in front of him and attacks again. His sword glowing faintly, he slashes at the troll and (AC16, 18+14=32, hit, damage 9) cuts it down where it stands. The body falls on top of the other two and slides off to the side of the pile. The door is now partly blocked by all the troll bodies. As the troll falls, Salix makes his move, rushing next to Ran, healing potion still in hand.

It seems that the other trolls have learned something from the head long charge of the first two. Taking a small step forward one of the remaining trolls (T3) reaches through the door and claws at Ragnar (AC26, 9+9=18, miss, 3+9=12, miss) but the dwarf is easily able to evade the clumsy attack of the larger creature. With an ungodly flexibility, the troll cranes it head around the corner and bites at Harp, (AC21, 6+4=10,miss) but the 1/2 orc gets his shield up in time and all the troll gets it a mouth full of steel.

Ranthir sees Salix rush to his side, holding out the potion bottle. Grabbing it from the druids hand, he pops the cork and swallows the liquid down (Heal 4). This potion must have been one of the older ones as it does not seem to do as much good as the first. Or it might be that he was not in as much danger as before.

Ragnar is torn as to what to do, advance and attack the troll in the door or make sure that the one at his feet stays down. Making his decision, he braces himself for the attack he knows will come when he lets his guard down, he swings his sword at the neck of the third troll (AOO from troll T3, AC26, 10+9=19, miss). As the claws of the troll in the door way scape at his armor, Ragnar beheads the troll at his feet.

Allistair is not sure what to do. He has a fairly good shot at the troll in the door, but there is no way to position the fireball behind it so that its blast would not fry his companions. Deciding to hold of for a few more seconds, and since they seem to be doing so well, he chants the words for his last mage arrow of the day with predicable results (Damage 10).

Kal hears Surin behind him, asking him to move. Move? In combat? But the little halfling is insistent, so Kal lunges with his rapier (AC16, 5+12=17, hit, damage 8), twirls away as he pulls his sword free and moves back a few steps, next to the dwarf.

Mund looks and sees that there is nothing for him to attack unless he moves towards the door. That puts him in the same position as the trolls were in and he saw how that worked out. Looking at Harp he asks "Charge or stay?"

"Step up to the door way, but don't cross. Be ready to fall back."

With that, Harp takes a small step up and takes a cautious swing at the troll on the other side of the door.

OOC: Porter, in retrospect, we may not be able to do this. Mark did say that the door way was getting littered with body parts.

Mark, I am going to ask for a ruling - are the spaces in front of the door S3 and S4 open enough for us to step into?

If it is too messed up, Harp will tell Ragnar and Mund to step back a little bit and try and draw the trolls into the room again. It will also give Allistair a chance to toss in another fire ball. Harp will continue to fight defensively.

From: Mark

Subject DEX check

I am going to apply a -4 circumstance penalty to attack if you stand in those squares. However, if your character makes a DC15 DEX check then there is no penalty.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 5 actions

OOC: Porter, Harp would not want to try to fight in those conditions. He wants the trolls to fight in those conditions - that would just be good tactics. We are smarted than they are - we need to have them come to us. Mund and Ragnar can step back and taunt them some more.

From: Randy

Subject Round 5 actions

Ranthir, feeling a little better, still does not feel up to joining a melee. "If you want my sword I will need more healing!" He calls out to nobody in particular.

If someone responds to the request for healing, Ran will keep his sword in hand. If not, he will drop it and draw his crossbow, ready to fire if he gets a clear shot.

From: Mark

Subject Round 5 actions

What is funny is that Ran would do better running through and provoking AOO than just standing still. His AC is +4 when moving around provoking AOO then it is standing still.

From: Karl

Subject Round 5 actions

Salix, sees Ran gulp down the potion and react with a look of disappointment. He isn't quite sure why, but Ran doesn't look all that much better after having drunk the thing. Salix prays to Obad-Hai to bless his friend with strength. (Casts CLW on Ran).

From: Randy

Subject Round 5 actions

Well if they get close enough to attack he will not be standing still. If they hit him with another blow like the last one Ran will be dead so he is trying to hang back out of the fight if possible.

From: Porter

Subject Round 5 actions

Mund wouldn't have a problem fighting in those squares, doesn't feel like stepping forward if Harp steps back.

Who all is stepping back? If harp is stepping back, Mund can just stay where he is and still block the doorway.

Of course, if Surin doesn't retreat, the troll might just stay where it is and do its full attack on Surin.

From: Josh

Subject round 5 actions

Kal's gonna try to hit something with his sword this round. If there's no possibility of that he'll just hang back and look for an opening. If he can somehow hit both, he'll go after the one that seems like it's taken a worse beating from his friends.

From: Mark

Subject Round 5 actions

You mean attack with his rapier.

There is no way he can attack both with his rapier, since he only gets one attack.

From: Kevin

OOC: Mark, just because he is not moving does not mean he is not trying to protect himself. He is not imobilized, just not dancing around. He should still get the benefit of his dex to his AC.

From: Mark

From where everyone is right now only Surin or Harp have a chance of an attack, with melee weapons. The troll however can attack Surin, Kal, Mund, Harp and Ragnar.

From: Kevin

Mark, if you choose not to answer as this is out of the normal game play.

Would the -4 you mentioned to us apply to the trolls if they moved into S3 and S4?

From: Porter

Subject Round 5 actions

Crap. You're right.

The way I see it, we've got to advance or we're in trouble.

From: Mark

Subject Round 5 actions

I know that. But Ran took Mobility as one of his feats last level which gives a +4 to AC against AOO when moving through threatened squares. So Rans normal AC is 4 higher when he is provoking AOO.

From: Mark

I will be giving them a -2 if they fail their DEX roll since they are large creatures and the piles bother them less.

Subject Round 5

Round 5 Initiative: Surin (17), Salix (15),Harp (15) T2-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Surin steps forward but is unable to get a line on the trolls on other side of the door. The frame and the wall block his way..

Salix sees the pained look on Ranthir's face and decides that the 1/2 elf needs further healing. Ragnar was better at this, Salix thinks, but he was busy imitating a wall. So Salix chants the basic healing prayer and lays hands on the fighter (CLW, heal 8) The wound in Ran's belly closes a bit more but it still serious.

Harp has a moment of indecision but then moves forward to block the door. "Mund, block the door with me and attack." Stepping over body parts (DEX check, DC15, 13+2=15, success), Harp hacks at one of the arms of the troll reaching through the door (AC16, 19+12=31, hit, critical threat, crit threat roll, AC16, 10+12=22, hit, critical hit, damage 22) and almost severs it at the elbow.

The hulking form in front of him moves a bit to the side, being pushed by the other troll(T2) so that it can get to the door as well. Both of them claw and bite at the 1/2 orc (T3, AC21, 9+9=18, miss, 9+9=18,miss, 6+4=10,miss, T2,AC21, 20+9=29, critical threat, crit threat roll, AC21, 11+9=20,miss, damage 9, 17+4=21, hit, damage 4) and the flurry of claws and teeth end up pushing Harp to his limit trying to keep them from hitting. The fact that he only has a few cuts and bruises shows that he was mostly successful.

Ran nods at Salix, thankful for the healing grace but still feels that he should hold back. If Mund or Harp or Ragnar falls he would have to fill the gap, but for now he would help from the back line.

Ragnar almost goes forward to stand next to Harp and block the door but realizes that Mund is correct. Ranthir is one of their best fighters and they might need his sword again before this was all over. Taking a quick step back and to his right, the dwarf turns and lays hands on the fighter. "Let's see what healing grace the battle lord is willing to dispense to a brave fighter today, he says with a grim determination. He chants the one of the more powerful healing prayers, giving up the ability to dispel the evil castings of his foes to do so (CSW, Heal 23). Ran looks on astonished as the wound closes under Ragnar's hands. The pain vanishes and Ran feels the best he has felt in days. The dwarf grins, "The Battle Lord was pleases with you today. Let's go help the other two before they get eaten."

Allistair stand where he was noticing that the trolls are not trying to charge through the door. They learned quickly, he thinks. Unfortunately, he is out of the mage arrow spells. What else can I do?

Kal sees an opening next to Harp and moves to fill the spot. His rapier a blur, he lunges at the green figure, blade piercing spongy flesh again (AC16, 17+12=29, hit, damage 11). He comes back on guard, shoulder to shoulder with Harp and facing two very large trolls through the doorway.

Mund curses at the elf as he steps in front him. "What in the nine hells are you doing, elf?" he spits. Mund restrains himself from splitting the elf in half where he stands, sure that the trolls will tear him to pieces in a few seconds.

Subject round 6 actions

With a satisfying kachunk, Harp watches as his sword slices at the arm of one of the trolls. Damn that felt good. He feels as though with just a little more training, he might even be able to follow through and make a follow up swing like Ran and Mund were able to do. But, the attack brings him to the attention of both of the trolls.

He is standing in the door way, just him and the power of the Battle Lord against these evil, smelly creatures. It takes all of his skill to parry most of the blows, only a couple of bites or scratches getting through his defenses. Ran had taken much worse, so Harp feel lucky. His shout out to Mund is answered when a body moves up to his side. To his surprise, however, it is the thin blade of Kal, not the broad axe of Mund. Kal looked a little bit out of his element against these huge things, but then again, so did Ragnar, and look what he had done when those two things had tried to push him aside. With a lightning fast strike, Kal plunges his rapier into the other troll in the door way.

"Do you want to finish this together, or do you want to let Mund in to have some fun?" Harp asks as the two fight side by side. Their two fighting styles could not be more different, but their effects seemed to be the same.

Harp swings at the troll in front of him. (OOC: Normal attack on T3).

Salix will step over to U3. He sees that there is little he can do at this point, but this will put him in a better position to help if needed.

(Is T3 a threatened square? Not that it matters since Salix doesn't want to block the fighters, but I'm curious).

From: Mark

Subject Round 6 actions

I noticed a couple of errors in last nights turn. They should not make a huge difference and I will write the retcon tonight.

First, I did not have Harp fight defensivly. That would probably stop the bite attack. Also, I did not have Kal make a DEX check.

From: Porter

Is it possible to have Mund step forward to have S5 and attack during that turn instead of sitting there doing nothing?

From: Mark

Subject Round 6 actions

He can step forward but would not be able to attack. The wall, the door and the people around him block his attack.

The same with Surin.

From: Porter

Subject Round 6 actions

Really? You can't attack along the diagonal?

OK, is it possible for Mund, in round 5, to hold his action into round 6 (or beyond) so that as soon as he has something to do he can do it immediately?

From: Mark

Subject Round 6 actions

Normally you can but I consider this situation, with the door and the wall there, to be special.

You do understand that if Mund moves to S5 he will have a wall to his side and that the creature can not attack through the wall. Just like Mund can not attack through a wall.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 6 actions

OOC: But, if after Kal attacks, he takes a 5 ft step away, Mund could 5 ft step into his place and make 2 attacks.

If you ask Kal nicely, he may make room for you. Or Mund could just slice him in half and then step into place - tempting, I know, but that would probably cause issues when the fight is over.

From: Mark

Subject Round 6 action

He can ask what he wants.

From: Porter

Round 6 Initiative: Surin (17), Salix (15),Harp (15) T2-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Surin and Salix both look on as Harp and Kal step forward, blocking the door with their bodies. Salix hears Ran's gasp of astonishment when Ragnar heals him and sees him grip his sword with renewed vigor. The 1/2 elf grips his own scimitar, hoping that he will not called on to use it.

Harp is surprised to see the elf step up instead of Mund. He can hear Mund's opinion of Kal behind him. "Do you want to finish this together or do you want to let Mund in to have some fun?" he asks Kal. He then turns his attention back to the troll in front of him. Harp's "style" is the exact opposite of the agile elf's. Where Kal is fluid and graceful, Harp is mechanical and straightforward. His sword swinging high and flashing down, he strikes again (AC16,12+12=24, hit, damage 10), cutting a large section from the monsters side.

The troll responds with a vicious clawing at Harp's chest (AC21, 18+9=28, hit, damage 10, 5+9=14, miss, 19+4=23, hit, damage 5). Harp is able to deflect one of the claws, but the other rakes across his shoulder and the monster bites at his sword arm, connecting with a powerful bite.

Kal's foe also strikes with the characteristic ferocity of trolls everywhere (AC19, 7+9=16, miss, 3+9=12, miss, 2+4=6,miss). However the elf's combat dance seems to confound the troll. Every time the monster strikes or bites where the elf is, the elf isn't there any more. Kal seems to avoid the thing with an almost effortless ease.

Ran, his sword gripped tightly in his hand, moves into a position to fill the breach if Kal falls, but to his amazement, the elf seems to be holding his own.

Ragnar also watches the elf lethal dance. However, the cleric has seen the damage that one of the trolls can dish out if they connect. He moves up next to Ran, ready to fill in a gap in the line or healing a dying elf.

Allistair fumes. Out of mage arrows and with no room to use the fireball, he feels a bit helpless and useless.

Kal's combat dance is almost gleeful. Disdainful of the reach of the troll, he darts in and pierces the troll through the heart (AC16, 18+12=30, hit, critical threat, Crit threat roll, AC16, 17+12=29, critical hit damage 21). His rapier sinks into the things chest up to the hilt and Kal struggles to pull it back out. When he does, green blood pumps from the chest wound.

Mund stands behind Harp cursing at Kal in orcish. After one particularly nasty insult, Ragnar turns to the human and says "That was not a very nice thing to say."

Subject Round 7 actions

No. I think Josh is just being colorful. I mean how tricky is it to hack a troll to death with a sword. It take real artistry to kill it with a pokey weapon.

There is some quote from Dune where Duncan Idaho, I think, tells Paul A. that it does not take any artistry to kill some one with the edge of a sword, but it does take artistry to kill someone with the tip of a sword.

From: Porter

Subject Dune quote

You've got it backwards. Here's the qutoe:

"Gurney says there's no artistry in killing with the tip, that it should be done with the edge."

"Gurney's a romantic," the Duke growled. This talk of killing suddenly disturbed him, coming from his son. "I'd sooner you never had to kill ... but if the need arises, you do it however you can -- tip or edge." He looked up at the skylight, on which the rain was drumming.

From: Karl

I think it's really hard to do that because very few people really are NN. Most people N on the EG spectrum really lean more or less one way or the other. For actions that can be labeled G or E, there aren't many N choices. And for actions that are truely N, G or E only apply in specific contexts and then they apply for everyone.

But all that said, I don't think you're playing Mund out of character. But then again, when faced with N, I usually assume G until I see E. Make sense?

Subject Round 7

Round 7 Initiative: Surin (17), Salix (15),Harp (15) T2-5(15), Ranthir (12), Ragnar (11), Allistair (10), Kal (9), Mund (9)

Surin and Salix still wait for the two fighters in the door to either kill or be killed. The trolls look ferocious, but Harp and Kal seem to be holding their own. Salix is amazed that the lightly armored elf is unscathed in the battle so far.

Glancing around as he parries with the troll, Harp sees that Ran is back up and ready for action. He takes a quick swing (AC16, 9+12=21, hit, damage 8), leaves another green, oozing wound and steps back motioning for Ran to take his place. "You want to give some payback to these guys? Be my guest" Harp says as he makes room for the fighter. As Harp steps back he realizes that he has left Kal alone on the line.

The troll in front of Harp moves away from the door, holding in guts that are hanging from the many wounds. Kal's luck finally runs out. The troll he was fighting moves to the center of the door, and with a less obstructed path, mauls the elf. Stumbling a bit on the dead bodies of the fallen trolls (DEX check, DC15, 4+2=6,fail), the troll's claws reach in and punch a hole in the elf's fine leather armor (AC19,claw 19+7=26, hit, claw 16+7=23, hit, bite 10+2=12, miss, damage 32). The party looks on as the troll rips the elf's belly wide open and drops his lifeless form on the ground. The monster licks the blood from his claws and grins at the rest of the party.

Ran's mind goes cold. Kal had not been his favorite person, but he was a companion. Stepping up into Kal's place (DEX check, DC15, 15+3=18, success), Ran stands over Kal's body and strikes with a hard look in his eye (AC16, 6+11=17,hit, damage 10). His sword finds a open spot and slashes in. As he dodges a bite, he strikes again (AC16, 18+6=24, hit, damage 6) and connects again.

Ragnar had been waiting for something like this to happen. Deciding that he was not going to need to silence anyone today, he sacrifices that prayer for a healing one. He chants his prayer and kneels down to touch the elf with the battle lords healing grace. The troll swipes at him (AC26, 6+9=15), but the dwarf moves out of the way just before the claw hits. (CmodW, heal 17.) Kal sputters, and his eyes flutter, a vacant look in his eyes.

Allistair continues to look for a way to cast his one of his fireballs, but holds off.

Kal pushes and pulls himself way from the troll, grasping Ragnar's arm. He does not get far in the slippery troll and elf blood that covers the floor.

"Damn stupid elf." Mund says as he takes his place besides Ran. His axe a blur of steel, he lays into the troll and starts cutting off body parts (AC16, 5+12=17, hit, damage 10, 20+7=27, hit, critical threat, crit threat roll, AC16, 9+7=16, hit, critical hit, damage 39). His first swing cuts off a hand, but his back swing catches the troll right in the forehead and splits the skull in two. The axe cuts the troll almost in half all the way down to its chest. The thing falls to the ground, green blood flowing from the gapping head wound.
