A decoy
Subject A decoy
Harp is taken aback that they can not see their quarry. As he starts to list the order that the party will enter the room Salix offers to summon an ally from nature to use as a decoy. "That is a great idea Salix. Please do so at once." Turning to Kal Harp says "We are going to attack and I hope to use those fireballs to good effect, but if the thing is sitting just above the door, tossing fireballs in willy nilly is just going to waste Allistair's power. Let's see if the thing is above the door? Kal, I have a mirror in the outside pocket of my pack, dig it out and use it to see if there is anything above the door."
Kal nods and quickly finds the mirror. As Salix prepares to summon his ally, Kal slips the mirror just inside the door, using it to look up. It is a quick glance but he sees nothing. Turning and shaking his head at Harp, he puts the mirror back in the backpack. Salix then says his prayer to Obad-Hai and a wolf appears in their midst. At Salix's command the wolf darts to the door. Mund nudges the door open about a foot wide(OODM the door opens in and to the left) and the wolf enters the room at a run. The party listens at the open door.
Soon after the wolf enters the room there is a roaring sound from someplace distant in the room. The echoes reverberating and bouncing all over the place. A loud whooshing sound followed by a quick yelp and then silence. There is a sound of wings flapping.
OODM: Ok what now?

IC: Harp looks at the others and says "All right, we know where it's not and have good idea of where it is. Ran, Mund and Kal, take the lead, Salix, you and I are on either side of Ragnar, Surin, you take the rear with Allistair and keep an eye behind us. Remember, Ragnar's circle of protection only has a limited range, so stay close if you can - but if you three up front see an opportunity, don't be afraid to take it. Lets move in and move toward that sound we just heard."
OOC: Mark, I am assuming that the previously discussed spells of protection will have been cast prior to our moving in. Harp will be behind Kal since he has the fewest HP of the front line guys.

I said that every one was healed the night before.
I think the confusion is that Harp was to be behind Kal, since Kal has the fewest hit points between the three guys in the front line: Mund, Ranthir and Kal. Kevin was placing Harp behind Kal in case Kal has to move back since if Kal takes damage he is least able to stand toe to toe with something.
Just Harp's lack of confidence in the elf. :)

The party listens to what seems to be the quick and violent death of the wolf. "Well, we know something is in there and that it is not right above the door" Harp says. "Time to go. Allistair, if the thing is far enough away and you can see it and there is enough room, try and toast it with one of those nifty fireballs, like you did against the land shark. The rest of you, in order, stay close to Ragnar until we have to split out." With that Harp nods at Mund and the barbarian shoves the door the rest of the way open and the party charges into the room.
As they enter the room it's size becomes apparent to them. It is easily 4 times the size of any other room they have been in yet. It is at least 100 feet on each side and the goes from around 50 feet at the edges to at least 100 feet in the middle. Almost 100 feet away the party can barely make out a form hunched over another smaller form. The patches of ice through out the room reflect off of the hide of the beast as it looks up at the party's entrance, its nose covered in blood.
The party is surprised at how small the creature is. Smaller than a pony but larger than a large dog, it hardly seem very intimidating. "We were scared of that?" Mund says. Then the thing roars.
Round 1 Initiative.
Surin (23), Salix (21), Allistair (19), Ragnar (17), Dragon (13), Ranthir (12), Harp (11), Kal (10), Mund (7)
OODM: Ok here is the situation. The room, especially the end where the dragon is is full of lots of patches of ice. If you move any more than a standard move then you will need to make a DEX check to keep your balance. The light in the room is dim but reflects all over the place, but there is a lot of shadows. This is the one problem that I have with the MM. The creature is M sized so only takes up a 5 FT. square. I will deal with that for now but I hope it does not cause problems in coming turns. I have included a map. It is turned on its side. The door is on the left wall and the wall at the bottom would have been the wall on the right on the whole dungeon map I sent. Any questions let me know.

OOC: Harp is again amazed at their fighters inability to get good initiative rolls. Harp, who is wearing Plate mail and has the DEX of a tree, he can understand, but Kal, Mund and Ran being that low? Truly the gods must hate this group.
IC: Harp sees the creature ahead, gorging itself on the remains of the wolf. It certainly did not look too impressive. But, keeping Allistairs words in the back of his head, he says to the group
"OK, it does not look like its a big one, but don't get cocky. Lets move forward slowly until we get in spell range, then Allistair, you and Salix hit it with what you can. Be careful of all this ice"

OOC: Mark, let me clarify - the group is going to take 1 normal move action at the slowest movement of the group (probably 20, based on Ragnar, Surin and Harp). This will allow the spell casters to cast a spell if appropriate. I want us to look like we are threatening the dragon, but I do not want to get too far from the door. I want to be able to make a judicious retreat through the door if this thing ends up carrying a bigger stick than it looks like.

Hiding, round 1 and the map
Subject Hiding
Actually it might be easier then you think. If Surin makes a good hide and move silent roll, he can wait in the shadows until the creature comes to the party. It does not have to be on the ground since Surin can shoot with a missle weapon. What you might want to do is, once he is in place, hold action, stating that Surin will do a sneak attack when the creature gets in range. That means that Surin would go before the creature got to attack anyone, or at least at the same time. Surin's Initiave roll would then change to that of the dragon but becuase of his probably higher DEX score, Surin would always go first.

Ragnar can hardly make sense of what he sees upon entering the room. The creature was hardly larger than Ragnar himself! And yet, it certainly looked more or less like he had always imagined a dragon. Perhaps it was a related species? Surely this could not be the powerful, deadly species Ragnar had heard so much about.
He puts his thoughts behind him for now. For now, he need simply follow Harp's lead. He begins advancing slowly, trying to stay within 10' of everyone to provide them with the protection of his god (though since Mund is apparently charging ahead he won't try to cover him.)

Subject Round 1
Round 1 Initiative: Surin (23), Salix (21), Allistair (19), Ragnar (17), Dragon (13), Ranthir (12), Harp (11), Kal (10), Mund (7)
Surin decides that he is going to let the biggins fight this thing and makes a move to the south wall, trying to stay in the shadows and not to make too much noise (Hide=16+17=33, Move Silent=16+14=30). As he moves he slips a sling stone into his sling and preps the weapon for quick use.
Allistair is also a little shocked at how small the creature is but remembers that magic can do strange things. Since he already had the components in his hands he figures that this will be about his only chance to use the fireball before things get close. Chanting the words he had memorized, he grinds the little piece of sulfur between his fingers and points at the beast. A small burning ember flys from his fingers and streaks towards his foe. As the ember moves it grows slowly until it reaches a point just above the beast and explodes. The beast is engulfed in a ball of flames (REF save DC17, 8+8=16, fail, damage 27). The magic user then follows Ragnar as they move carefully into the room.
The sound the beast makes at the touch of the flames belies its size. The roar is almost enough to make several party members run but the are able to control themselves. Salix calls up on the power of Obad-Hai and summons forth a ball of flame right next to the dragon as well. At his command it rolls towards the dragon. The dragon, still distracted from the smoldering damage of the fireball does not notice it and is burned when the small ball touches it (REF save DC15, 4+8=12, fail, damage 9). He then also follows Ragnar, trying to stay with in the protection of the prayer.
Ragnar moves forward at a steady pace trying not to misstep or leave anyone else behind.
The dragon spreads it wings and they shimmer in the half light, sparkling with reflected light. It then launches itself into the air and towards the group. With a speed that surprises everyone the dragon passes just in front of Ragnar and unleashes a blast of cold (DC18, Ragnar 6+3=9, fail, damage 7, Salix 14+5=19, save, damage 4, Allistair 10+3=13, fail, damage 16). The dwarf and the two around him are surrounded by the blast. Salix is able to dodge the worst of the blast and Ragnar's time in the cold mountain heights serves him well. However Allistair screams as the cold cuts through him and almost freezes him to the bone. The dragon turns almost in mid air and takes off towards the far end of the room.
Ranthir and Harp are both stunned at the ferocity of the attack. They move up and take position around Ragnar and the almost frozen mage.
Kal knows that this evil beast is here to test them and that he will not fail the test. He moves forward with the group and then chants his spell and points his rapier at the receding form of the dragon. Three bolts of mystical energy leap from the tip of his sword and streak towards the retreating foe. They strike the dragon (Damage 12) and burn small holes in the glimmering white hide.
Seeing his little brother scream from the blast of cold Mund decides to do his best decoy impression. He moves in a blur and speeds ahead of the rest of the party, yelling at the top of his voice trying to get the dragons attention.
OODM: Ok end of round 1. Please note the location of the dragon on the Map. It is still in the air and is about 15 feet in the air. I need actions for round 2. Please take note of the action order. Round 2 actions, weapons and a baby
Subject Round 2 actions
OOC: This time I am very pleased with the liberties you took with Mund. Freaking out that his brother got hurt by the dragon and trying to bring its wrath upon Mund is exactly correct.
IC:
Mund sees the baby dragon attack the rest of the party, all clumped together. Mund had known that being so close together was a bad idea. He had considered bringing this up, but once that uppity orc gets an idea in that head of his, ain't nothing else getting in there.
If it were just Harp and his toadies getting blasted, it wouldn't be that big a deal, but his little brother Alley is there with them. Mund summons the spirit of the bear totem and feels his body filled with the strength and health of a raging bear. He lets out a yell and starts waving his arms and taunting the dragon. "Come here, you little lizard and let me step on you! You wouldn't stand a chance against a human warrior, you vermin!"
Mund has no idea if dragons can even speak common, but has fun taunting the dragon anyway.
OOC:
OK, here's what Mund is doing:
If the rest of the party continues to advance toward the dragon, Mund will do so as well. If not, Mund will also stay put.
Mund's action is way at the end of the round, so he'll get a chance to see what others are doing.
There's almost no chance that the dragon will come down within melee range of Mund, but if he does, Mund responds in kind. Otherwise, Mund will shoot off an arrow.

IC: Harp watches as Allistairs ember flys forward, growing in size until it bursts atop the dragon. He had seen Allistair do this before, but Harp is still amazed at the power of the explosion. He sees the dragon engulfed in flames, the pain obvious.
Then, disaster. The dragon flys around the group, hitting them from the side. Salix and Ragnar seem affected a little, but Allistair takes the brunt of the icy breath of the small dragon. How can something that small cause so much damage. Worse, Harp's plan to keep everyone within range of Ragnar's circle of protection was backfiring. Instead of protecting everyone, especially Allistair, it was simply giving the dragon 1 target to aim at, instead of many. How could he have been so stupid? He should have known better. His eagerness to enter battle had clouded his judgement, and now it was costing his companions. Then Harp hears Mund and Kal shout, and start to move away from the gorup. They understood - too bad Harp had not until now. With a shout, Harp yells to the others "Salix, Ranthir, take your lead from Mund and Kal. Spread out from here and give that thing too many targets to choose from. I will stay with Ragnar and protect Allistair"
OOC: Mark, if Ragnar has not already provided some healing to Allistair, Harp will sacrifice his Bulls Strength to do so ( I forget which level of healing I get as a 2nd level, but I will use it). (OOC - on that note, Salix can theoretically attack with the flame sphere, bringing it in from an angle opposite say, Mund's attack. Does that get a flanking advantage or give one to Mund? Or is that determined by where Salix is instead of where the sphere is? If the latter, oh well, but I think it's a minor absurdity caused by the letter of the rules.)

Subject Round 2 actions
OOC: Ouch. I am not regretting choosing to have an 18 Con for Allistair.
IC: Allistair, having focused solely on casting the fireball correctly, was completely unprepared for the dragon's quick counter-attack. He can't afford to take another hit like that. Also, the shock from the cold blast is making it hard for him to concentrate, he can feel his mental grip on his spells slipping. Allistair would probably be better off taking a moment out to get his wits back before trying another spell.
"Spread out!" Allistair yells. "As long as it's flying we're most vulnerable in a group!" Allistair heads back towards the entrance to the large room. With the high ceiling the dragon will probably stay in flight until it's killed, so as long as he has line-of-sight he should be able to hit the dragon with fireballs and magic missiles.

Subject Round 2
Round 1 Initiative: Surin (23), Salix (21), Allistair (19), Ragnar (17), Dragon (13), Ranthir (12), Harp (11), Kal (10), Mund (7)
In the shadows Surin watches as the beast blasts Ragnar, Allistair and his friend Salix with a cone of cold that looks to freeze them to the bone. As the creature turns in the air , Surin figures that it will pass with in about 30 feet of where he is hiding as it flys by.. Figuring that he would not get a better chance Surin winds up his sling and launches a lead bullet at the thing as it moves by. His aim it true but the bullet bounce off the armored hide (AC21, 4+13=17, miss).
Salix shivers a bit from the effects of the cold (Concentration check, DC14, 6+10=16, success) but shakes them off and mentally commands the ball of flame to move after the dragon. He soon figures out that it is impossible for the ball to keep up with the flying dragon. Not only is the beast usually too far off the ground for the sphere to reach, the dragon is moving much to fast for the sphere to catch. Leaving the ball to itself for now the druid whirls his sling and lets fly as the creature is flying by (AC21, 5+5=10, miss). His throw is woefully behind the dragon and misses by a wide margin.
Allistair is stunned by the cold but forces himself to go past the pain and the cold (Concentration check DC26, 15+12=27, success). Making his fingers form the right gestures and his voice pronounce the correct words in the correct order by pure force of will, Allistair points at the dragon and three bolts of energy leap from his fingers and catch the dragon in mid air (Damage 7). Harp pushes him yelling "Get to the door, do your magic stuff from there." And with that the 1/2 orc manhandles the mage towards the door.
Ragnar starts the chat for the weapon of his god and is just barely able to say the words with out his teeth chattering (Concentration check DC17, 7+10=17, success). As he finishes his chanting a glowing longsword appears besides the dragon slashing at its flank (AC21, 13+7=20, miss) but it seems to bounce off the gleaming white hide.
Mund's shouting has done it's job. The dragon makes an almost 180 degree turn in mid air and lands almost right in front of the barbarian. As it comes to a stop it takes a bite at Mund (AC22, 7+15=22, hit, damage 7). Mund dodges the bite at the last second, wrenching his back a bit avoiding the snapping teeth.
Ran moves with his crossbow out, watching in horror as the creature lands in front of Mund and almost bites him in half. He breaths a bit easier when he sees the barbarian dodge out of the way at the last minute. He his not sure about firing into the combat but figures something has to be done, so he takes a quick shot (AC21, 8+10=18, miss). His shot goes wide to the right missing both Mund and the dragon.
Harp turns and watches as Allistair fights off the effects of the cold and launches another spell. Brave man to stand there and keep casting while the dragon is still alive. And he thought all mage's were cowards. Well this one would be a brave dead mage if he stayed in here any longer. Harp grabs the mage and hustles him to the door way. "Get to the door way, do your magic stuff there." As they move Harp prays to the battle lord for healing grace, sacrificing another of his graces for the day (Cure Moderate wounds on Allistair, Heal 10 points).
Kal splits from the group and heads towards the north wall. When he gets within 20 feet of it he stops and turns and repeats the spell he had just used. Again three bolts of energy leap from the tip of his rapier and streak towards where the dragon and Mund are fighting. The weave around Ran and strike the dragon solidly on the flank (Damage 11).
As Mund dodges the dragons bite he screams at it "No one hurts my brother Ally" and swings his axe at the dragon's head. The axe connects but bounces harmlessly off the glittering scales (AC21, 7+9=16, miss). The dragon turns to look at the barbarian and an evil grin forms on its face. In an ancient language that Mund does not understand, it speaks to him.

I think you misunderstand. I want to move the sphere as much as possible prior to attacking with the sling (if "as much as possible" is zero, then OK, or in other words, forget moving the sphere.)
I don't think Salix is at 0 feet range and therefore shouldn't provoke and AOO. The dragon landed at Mund, right, a fair distance from Salix, right?
I had to be vague since I didn't see the sphere marked on the map and have no idea where it is in relation to where the dragon is now. Is it close enough to attack the now-landed dragon with it?

Ok I thought you wanted Salix to move close enough to attack with the sling.
Ok here is the situation. The ball is within 30 feet of the dragon since it can not have moved more than 30 feet this round. I will let it be with in 30 feet of the dragon this turn.
If Salix directs the ball he can not reload his sling. Reloading a sling is a move action. So then Salix's action this round would be to attack the dragon with the ball.

Sounds good. He would not want to waste the grace of Obad-Hai if it was still useful.

Harp watches as the dragon flies around. Damn, that thing could move, and turn. It was like it had the ability to turn in mid flight. At least he had gotten Allistair out of the direct line of attack. Turning himself to stand between the dragon and Allistair, Harp tries to decide what to do. It is too far to try his crossbow, even if he had an bolts left. He was too far away to attack it with his sword. He had one option left. Harp places his right hand, still gripping his longsword, over his heart, and says a simple prayer, asking the Battle lord to provide him a weapon that might hurt this beast. When it appears by the dragon, Harp wills it to attack the beast. Harp then looks over his should at Allistair and asks "Are you OK here by yourself, or do you want me to stay?" Harp wants to run up and help attack the beast, but knows that he probably should not leave their mage here alone.
OOC:Mark, the above assumes that the dragon will be occupied with the folks in front of it and that it is within range of my Spiritual Weapon. If it moves closer to Allistair, the Harp will do what he can to block its way - or if it is within 1 move action, Harp will move and attack it with his sword.

Considering all the area to the area to the north and to the east of the dragon is open, it should be simple to aim the blast radius of another fireball so that it will hit the dragon but not Mund. That being the case, time for some roasted dragon!
Also, could Allistair hear what the dragon said to Mund?

He was a ways away and otherwise occupied.
Just to let you know, this one is going to be harder to aim then the time you did this with the land shark. The landshark was a 10 x 10 creature, this one is a 5 foot square. I am going to make you roll a to hit roll to hit the proper square, sort of like throwing a splash weapon. Of course, Mund has a good REF save and a lot of hit points. :)

If left to his own devices, Ragnar will charge the dragon, ending up next to Mund I expect. If Harp orders him to stay back and protect Allistair or anything else, he'll do that.

Surin is a bit discouraged to find that the dragon didn't hardly seem to even notice his sling bullet. Hugging the wall, he inches a bit closer to it to try another shot.
OOC: The way I'm reading the map, Surin is too far away for his ranged attack to be effective. He'll move this round and try to get a better line of sight. :)

actually his sling has range increments of 50 feet, however, he would take a -2 for each 50 feet past the first as well as a -4 for shooting into combat unless he has a feat that gets rid of that.

Excellent! The dragon took the bait -- Mund himself. It looks like he does understand common. Either that, or he can tell what a tasty piece of man-flesh Mund is.
Mund hits the dragon square on the snout. It doesn't seem to hurt it much, so Mund decides to press the verbal attack.
"Yeah, you liked that, didn't you! Your mama liked it last night! What's the matter? You can't handle one scrawny little human?"
Mund then yells out to the magicker out there: "Don't worry about me! Fry this bastard!"

Subject Round 3
Round 1 Initiative: Surin (23), Salix (21), Allistair (19), Ragnar (17), Dragon (13), Ranthir (12), Harp (11), Kal (10), Mund (7)
Surin shakes his head at seeing his bullet bounce off the armored hide of the dragon. That had been his best shot and the creature hardly responded to the attack, almost like he was not there. Trying to keep in the shadows the halfling moves along the wall a bit more.
Salix watches the dragon land in front of Mund and take a bite out of him. He then sees Mund's axe bounce off the creature, not even leaving a mark. The young druid concentrates on the flaming sphere and wills it to move towards the creatures back (REF save DC15, 4+8=12, fail, damage 12). The ball of flame rolls right over the dragon's tail, a dark cloud of black smoke rising from the burnt flesh.
Allistair watches his brother get bitten by the dragon and Mund's ineffective response. This one is going to be harder he thinks to himself, I don't want to catch Mund in it. Trying to aim his spell so that only the dragon is caught in the explosion, the wizard tries to aim for a spot a bit away from the two. However the cold in his arm ruins his aim (AC10, 2+2=4, miss, area of effect moves 5 feet north, both dragon and Mund missed) and a huge ball of flame explodes next to the two fighting but does not burn them.
Ragnar pulls his sword and yelling a battle cry to the battle lord charges the dragon. His metal shod boots clang on the stone floor and his dwarven battle cry fills the room. His sword flashes in the glittering ice light but bounces harmlessly from the thick hide of the dragon (AC21, 9+9=18, miss). The mystical sword that Ragnar had summoned just a few seconds ago also strikes and this time finds its mark (AC21, 15+7=22, hit, damage 5). The glowing sword tears a small hole in the beasts wing.
The dragon sits back on its haunches and it long neck snakes out and bites Mund on the thigh (AC23, 9+15=24, hit, damage 12) As Mund moves to block the bite a claw flashes up and gouges Mund's arm (AC23, 13+10, hit, damage 2) Mund is able to catch the other claw on his shield (AC23, 4+10=14, miss) and ducks under the two wings that flap at his face (AC23, 2+5=7, 11+5=16,miss,miss).
Ranthir pulls out another bolt from his case and reloads and aims again. Again the moving forms of his companions distracts him enough to mess up his aim (AC21, 11+6=17,miss) and the bolt flies wide.
To Harps mind, Allistair is fine. The mage is able to cast his spells and the worst of the effects of the cold seem to have disappeared with the healing prayer. Harp turns and watches Mund get bitten again and slashed with a claw. Knowing that he is too far to help with his sword, he touches his holy symbol and asks the battle lord for his assistance. A second glowing longsword appears. However in his rush, Harp misdirects the sword and it misses the dragon (AC21, 3+7=10,miss).
Kal, flush with the success that his spells seem to be having cast the same spell for a third time, knowing that this would be the last time today he would be able. Focusing his will, he struggles through saying the words of the spell. This third expression of this spell is the hardest thing he has ever done. Never before had he cast this spell this many times this close together. But cast it he does. Three more bolts of force leap from the tip of his rapier and crash into the dragon, leaving even more burning holes (Damage 11).
Mund licks the blood from the scratch on his arm and smiles at the dragon. "Now you've gone and pissed me off." He had seem the ball of flame explode behind the dragon and figured his brother was worrying about hurting him. "Don't worry about me, fry this bastard!" Mund shouts as he launches another attack at the dragons head. He swings his axe in a wide arc, aiming for the long neck. His axe connects (AC21, 20+9=29, hit, critical threat, critical threat roll, AC21, 17+9, hit, critical hit, damage 23) and cuts through the neck of the beast. The dragon's body falls on it's side, the wings flapping and the legs kicking. The head falls to the other side, the eyes wide in astonishment. Mund stands over the fallen foe and says "Don't know what they were talking about. Dragon's ain't so tough."
OODM: Fight is over. I need commentary from the characters.
