Flint whispers back "You are not ready for that transformation yet. Remember that when you take the form of a beast, there is a part of you that wants to stay in that form. This form is very primative, very powerful, very attractive. If one is not experienced with it, it is possible to loose oneself in the form."

The Stallion gives a nod of approval and gestures Flint to follow. Several centaurs move to follow so the party does as well. The Stallion leads Flint and the others to the large creek that is running down the side of the encampment. The water flows at a fairly nice pace, the rocky bottom visible in the clear, mountain water. There are numerous large rocks and boulders along the creek bed. The creek looks to be maybe 4 or 5 feet deep at it's deepest and 20-25 feet wide. The Stallion points to the creek. "The Test of Agility is this. We must race to that spot". He points to a spot about 300 yards up stream "where the creek turns towards the mountains. The first one there wins. Understand?"
Flint nods, waiting for the catch. "However, we must race, moving from rock to rock. We are not allowed to touch the banks or the water. To check for this, spotters will be placed along the course. We will pair your friends with centaurs, and they will observe our race. If one of us touches the water then they loose. Agreed?" Flint nods and the party pairs off with centaurs. Salix finds himself paired with L'ton at the furthest point along the race path. Flint and the Stallion take their place, each one on a different bank. Another centaur stands in the middle of the creek and gives the signal for the two to start.
The Stallion takes off first. He is a large creature, but incredibly strong and agile. Many of the rocks and boulders are large enough for him to land on and he has lived in the valley for a long time. He knows the creek like the back of his hand. He quickly makes three jumps and before Flint has even moved onto his first rock, the Stallion has made a good start up the river. Flint jumps from the shore onto the closest rock, but quickly falls behind.
With a gap opening, the two pass Mund and K'lal and then Ranthir and R'ken. Next is Ragnar and D'pol and V'pel and Harp. By the time Flint is half way the Stallion is obviously far ahead. Flint assesses the situation and then his form shimmers. In his place is a mountain lion. With a grace and agility born of years in the mountains, Flint's feline form quickly starts catching up to the Stallion. Salix hears L'ton hiss when he sees this and the druid gives the centaur a quick look. L'ton's eyes are focused on Flint and his face is a mask of rage. Salix quickly turns his eyes back to the race. The two competitors are neck and neck as they come to the bend in the creek. With a last burst of speed Flint bounds from one boulder to a flat rock just beyond the finish line. The Stallion lands on a rock next to him a few seconds later.
All of the observers have been rushing behind the two and a crowd has gathered. As Flint and the Stallion move towards the shore, Salix and the rest of the party rush to greet him, slapping him on the back, congratulating him on his victory. Over the tumult a voice rings out. "The druid stepped in the water." Every one turns and faces the source of the voice: L'ton. The Stallion looks at L'ton for several seconds. Not taking his eyes from the younger centaur he asks "What say you, young druid? Salix I think you were called. Did my opponent touch the water?" The whole herd is watching, waiting for Salix's response.
OODM: I have sent Karl some information.

"Great Stallion," Salix replies, as politely as he can, "I am sure that he did not."

Mund shifts his weight, getting ready to react, and tries to simultaneously keep his eyes on K'lal, L'ton, and the Sallion.

As much as Surin would like to try to get in behind the centaurs - in case something were to go wrong, any move at this point would probably be considered aggressive. Watching the expressions of those around him carefully, he avoids any aggressive move, trusting to Salix to resolve the situation without bloodshed.

L'ton barks out a contemptous laugh "Oh course the two legger says that. They stick together. His master touched the water, I swear." The Stallion looks at the two judges. "Did I touch the water?"

Mund is about to respond loudly and confrontationally to the nag's comments, but decides to hold his tongue. This Flint feller has handled these asses pretty well so far, and Mund wants to see what he has up his sleeve.

"As a matter of fact, Great Stallion, you did. I did not mention it before because it made no difference to the outcome of the race."
Salix is using all his skill at diplomacy.

L'ton's reaction is immediate and loud "He lies Stallion. He is trying to steal the test from you. You should punish him for this insolence. You should let me punish him for his insolence." L'ton starts to puff up his chest and prance around.
The Stallion turn to Flint "Human druid Flint, how do you propose we settle this disagreement?"
Flint thinks for a moment and then replies "Within my party is a cleric of Heironious. You know of Heironious? We could ask him to judge." L'ton's response is vocal ""I will not be judged by one of the two legged." The Stallion whips around and slaps L'ton sharply across the face. "You will be judged by who I say, for I am Stallion in this valley, not you." L'ton looks at the Stallion, his eyes wide in shame and he bows his head. The Stallion turns back to the party "Cleric of Heironious, come forward." Ragnar comes forward and stands before the bulk of the Stallion. Craning his neck he replies "How may I serve the Stallion of the Herd of the Tree?" "Do you have any blessings that would allow the truth to be known?"

Ragnar replies, "I do, Stallion. I may ask the aid of Heironeous to create a small area in which no one may knowingly speak a lie. If you wish, I can do so immediately," he concludes, a hint of question in his voice.

The Stallion turns to Salix "Are you willing to do this?" Salix nods yes.The Stallion turns to L'ton "Are you willing to do this?" L'ton's faceblanches at this question. "Well, hm, I...." The Stallion's voice booms out over the clearing "Either you are telling the truth and are willing tosubmit to this or you are not. Which is it?" L'ton shuffles his hooves andducks his body for a few seconds before screaming "Not" and like an arrow he takes off for the forest fringe.
"Let him go" says the Stallion. "Flint, you win the third test. Now is thetime for the fourth test, the Test of Compassion. What shall be the fate ofL'ton for bearing false witness against you?" Flint thinks for a few seconds and then turns "May I talk to my friends first?" The Stallion nods.
Flint motions for the others to circle around "Well, what do you think?"
OODM: Flint is asking everyones opinion.

Flint whispers back "I'm not really sure. At the least I would have lost the Test and we would not have been able to get the gem you seek. They probably would have herded us back to the waterfall and told us to leave. They probably would not have attacked us, unless we struck first, but they would not have let us hunt or gather or such. Not that that bothers me."

Allistair is thinking about potential consequences. "Since this last test is the test of compassion, I would assume you are supposed to show compassion on L'ton. L'ton is proud as the rest of the centaurs are, but not very smart. Being caught in his obvious lie has caused him great shame, and he'll lose face here in the centaur community whether you forgive him or not. If you don't forgive him, he may even be exiled. If you do forgive him he will be able to still live in the community, but he will not forgive you for shaming him. I would then suggest sleeping with one eye open until we're out of this valley."

I am sorry this is taking longer than expected. Actually, this was not planned. It is something that just came to me a week or two ago. You know how some writers say that the characters drive them to write things they had not planned. Well this is one of those situations. Until a week or so ago, I did not have any centaurs guarding the Tree.
Such is life. I hope that this is not boring anyone.

Allistair thinks for a moment and then agrees. "I think you may be right, Mund. He probably has feelings of inadequacy and inferiority, most likely because he cannot stand up to the alpha male. He masks this with an overinflated pride which he is probably not even aware of himself. Simple forgiving him would hurt his pride even more, and may in fact actually be the less compassionate choice. He doesn't want condescending magnanimity. He wants to feel superior, or at least equal. Requiring a difficult price to be paid, or perhaps challenging him to trial by combat, may be the more compassionate choice in his case."

"I agree. In the end, he did not hurt us, so we have no reason to seek punishment beyond the will of The Stallion. Tell The Stallion that the harm L'ton has done is to himself and his herd, so he and the herd should decide upon the consequences."

Flint listens to the party's ideas intently. He then turns to the Stallion to give his reply "Stallion of the Herd, I am in a quandary. Normally I know what my decision would be. Under normal circumstances I would say that L'ton belongs to me for a year and a day, as is custom amongst the Herd in situations like this, correct?" The Stallion nods agreement. "However, as you know, the guardians of the Tree may not leave the valley. Only the druids may come and go. So L'ton may not come with me to fulfill his obligation to me even though I was the one he wronged." A light seems to go on in Flint's face as he realizes something.
"However" Flint continues "I was not the only one wronged. You, Stallion, were also wronged. Therefore I offer the debt owed to me to you. L'ton will be yours for a year and a day. He will be your mule." This last word is spoken in such as way as to leave no doubt in the others as to the position L'ton will take in the herd. "This is my sentence." When Flint is done the Stallion bows deeply to him "MountainFather Flint, you have passed the last test. The valley and the Herd are yours to command. How may we serve the druids?"
"Stallion, the Herd is still yours as is the guardianship of the Tree. That remains unchanged. I am here, with these others" Flint motions to the party "to retrieve something. We will leave now and should be back by dinner. If you would have some food ready for us when we get back, it would be appreciated." The Stallion bows and then signals the other centaurs to go about their duties. "Do you want an escort, MountainFather?" the Stallion asks. "No, we will be fine. Thank you." Flint gives a deep bow to the Stallion and the centaur moves away, yelling orders to the herd.
"OK, that was interesting." Flint gives the others a wry grin. "You folks ready to go get the gem?" The party members all say that they are ready. "Ok let's go."
OODM: I will try and write some more this afternoon.

Subject: The Tree
The party moves quickly over the gentle ground surrounding the centaur camp. The woods surround the camp have the look of a well kept forest. There are large swaths of clear sections though. Flint explains "Even the WorldTree loses branches now and then. When that happens dozens or hundreds of trees may be knocked over. Also the herd keeps the trees cut up to a height so that they can fun under the canopy with out hitting branches. It is one of the concessions we druids agreed to when the centaurs agreed to be the guardians of the Tree. It does make for a nice walk."
The looming presence of the Tree is always in the foreground, growing larger and larger. Up close the tree's true size becomes apparent. Up close the tree looks to be over 500 feet high. The drip ring is almost as big. Even with such a massive amount of foliage above it, the ground is covered in a soft carpet of grass. Flint stops for a second and takes of his boots and motions for the others to do so as well "This is sacred ground for our order. Please respect this." The party quickly takes off their footwear, Salix being the first one done.
Beneath their feet the soft cool texture of the grass eases what tension remains in the party. They follow Flint up to the trunk of the WorldTree. The trunk is a good 30 feet in diameter. There is something about the tree. It seems to exude health and strength. Salix has never seen anything like it. Of course neither has any one else in the party. Kal, who has spent much of his life in the woods of the elves on the southern continent, stands in awe of the Tree. "Now you know why it is called the WorldTree. Now I must go retrieve your gem. Acer told me this before he..." Flint trails off before continuing "When the gem was given over to our care so many thousands of years ago it was decided that it would be kept in the heart of the Tree. That is where I must go."
He walks up to the Tree, places his hands on the bark and starts chanting. Salix recognizes a few of the words spoken in the secret language of the druids. Then Flint seems to melt into the Tree. His form merges with the Tree and fades from sight. The party waits. One minute. Two minutes. Three minutes. Mund is starting to get worried "Salix, what if something has happened to Flint? Can you help him?" Salix shrugs "This is almost as far beyond me as it is you. I say wait. If Flint has become one with the Tree, his sense of time may be altered. Trees don't see the passing of time the same way we do. Let's sit down and wait."
The party spreads out a bit and Salix takes the time to soak in the power of the Tree. The sheer power in the tree humbles the druid. A while later, they are not sure how long but the sun is lower in the western sky, Flint's form starts detaching itself from the trunk. It takes several seconds and while he is still attached he looks as if he is made of wood, not flesh and blood. Eventually he steps away from the tree and almost falls. Salix is at his side in a second. "Thanks. That was... Different." He looks around, his eyes a bit unfocused. "How long?" he asks. "Several hours at least" Salix replies. "That long? It only seemed like seconds. We barely had time to say hello and discuss the weather."
As Salix leads Flint away from the tree and back towards the centaur camp Harp works his way close "I don't mean to be a pain, but Sir, did you get it?" "Get what?" is the distracted reply. "Oh, you mean this?" as he holds up a large gem. He hands it to Harp "This is what you came for, right?"

I will do more on the gem tomorrow. I actually have a list of where each gem is hidden, the type of each gem and which school of magic it effects. However, that list is on my computer at home, not at work, so I have no idea which gem this is. :)

Harp has nothing to add. While he is familiar with divine stuff and the feeling of power that obviously flows thorugh this place (and this tree), the power he feels is so much above him and of a different type than he is used to that he is somewhat awed.
He sort of thinks that centaur stallion would have made a pretty great mount, but he is not going to voice that opinion.

Flint holds up a green gem. "This is a gem from the Crown of Valorshield. From what Acer told me all summoning and conjuration spells will not work around it. Summoned creatures who get too close are automatically sent back to where they came from" Flint says as they walk back to the camp. He holds out the emerald to Salix "This is what you came for." He drops the gem in Salix's out streched hand. The younger druid feels the hidden power of the gem throb through him. He gut flips, once and he quickly hands the stone to Harp "This belongs to your Order and was actually your mission. Now let's go eat. It has been a long day."
OODM: Flint is in a surprisingly good mood. You can ask him questions if you like.

Because otherwise, a gem that nullifies summoning magic isn't the best choice for placing into a container that uses an extradimensional pocket."

Flint looks a bit embarrassed by Harp's praise "It was you and your friends who did the most. And Acer." Flint seems to think Ally is talking to him about the gem and replies "I have no idea. I didn't even know the gem was hidden in the tree until Acer told me. If it does what you say it does, whoever has the whole crown could be almost unstoppable." The party makes small talk as they work their way back to the camp. When they get there the Stallion greets them warmly "Did you find what you were looking for?" "Yes" says Flint "yes, we did."
"Wonderful" the Stallion replies. "My herd has been preparing dinner for you. You would honor us if you would join us." This is spoken to the group as much as it is to Flint. "We do not get much news of the outside world and love to hear new stories from visitors." The Stallion motions for the party to follow and they do. When they get to the clearing they can see that a feast has been prepared. Large tables, strangely shaped, fill the clearing and they are laden with all sorts of food. Berries and cheese, fresh deer, ale, water, breads. The design of the tables makes sense when the sit down to eat. The table allows them to "sit" and still be able to reach things.
A couple of the younger centaurs work as servers, but L'ton is also working as a server. The Stallion is polite to all of the servers, but rude and preemptory to L'ton. L'ton glares at the party but keeps his mouth shut. After several hours of eating and drinking the Stallion stands "I would invite you to my house for some more quite conversation" Flint nods and motions for the party to join him. They walk a short way to a medium sized barn type structure. It is located a fair distance from where the other centaurs seem to live. The Stallion takes a seat in a pile of hay and gestures for the others to either take the available seats or to sit on the floor. Flint and Salix choose the floor. "Ok my friend" says the Stallion to Flint "since you will be the guy in charge for a while I figure you should let me know what is really going on out there. I liked Acer. Tell me of his passing."
Flint, and the party, spends the next hour telling the Stallion the story of the past week or so. As they are telling their story Flint snaps his fingers "I knew there was something I was forgetting." He rummages around in his back pack and pulls out Salix's old leather armor as well as the other things that the party members had left behind before they went to Bodentown. When they are done telling their story Flint speaks up again.
"There is more that you need to know. The last thing Acer told me was what he had learned while captive of Faldor. He said that Faldor was just a pawn. Faldor spoke of someone, or something, that had given him a schedule to keep. Acer said that Faldor seemed in deathly fear of whoever this was."
OODM: Time to ask questions or discuss things before I send you back to Gorn in Schon.

Ragnar avoids joining the conversation when Flint discusses Acer's death. He still did not approve of the events at Bodentown. When he mentions Acer's words about Faldor, he perks up and pays attention. When he finishes, Ragnar speaks up. "I assume he gave no name for this person, but did he mention anything else, anything at all? Even knowing if Faldor had met with him personally, or the manner or frequency of their communication, might be useful."

Allistair thinks aloud. "Well, I guess Faldor doesn't need to worry about that anymore. Unless he was given the schedule by Nerull himself, or some other power from the outer planes, in which case death will only make things worse for him. I have to admit that I hope he does not enjoy afterlife."
"Ragnar, how much do you know about Nerull and his cult of death? Would Faldor have a superior? Is there a clear heirarchy among Nerull's followers?"
"Before when we were in the chapterhouse and getting the first gem, I was under the impression that all this was just a struggle between Heironius and Hextor, or at least the Order and the descendant of Macedar. Are Nerull and his followers involved too? How many gods are caught up in this contest now? Will there be more?"
OOC: Not sure if I got all the names right. It's been a while since this was discussed.

"No" Flint answers "nothing like that. Acer did not have much time to pass on to me what he had to, and he really did not know much more. He was in such poor shape while he was captive, but that bit of information stuck with him: that Faldor was doing someone else's bidding." Flint goes quiet for a few seconds. "You know, this whole thing with Bodentown could have been a ruse to get Acer to come himself. As far as I know Acer was the only druid who knew that the gem was in the tree. He was also one of the few who knew how to get to the valley of the tree. If they had been able to get that information from him, they could have come to the valley."

As they're having dinner, Mund asks what sports the centaurs enjoy, and asks if any of them would enjoy wrasslin' with him.

The centaurs give Mund a blank look when he mentions wrestling. When he describes what he means one of them says "Oh you mean horse play. Sure, we can try that. I hope we don't hurt you. I mean you are awfully small."
OODM: If I get a chance I will run a wrestling match between Mund and a centaur. They are large creatures so get some bonuses, but Mund is a skilled warrior and has feats and skills that will be useful in unarmed combat.

It is more likely that Faldor voluntarily followed another of his order, or even someone who was not another cleric of Nerull, as long as it furthered his god's aims."

And it is true that clerics of all faiths occasionally stray from following the teachings and furthering the purposes of their patron. However, those that do not continue to follow, at least generally, the path their deity wishes soon find that they cannot rely on his aid. The fact that Faldor had the power to create the monstrosities he did indicates that he was still faithful in advancing the aims of Nerull."

OOC: Question for our DM, is that an accurate description? I know its been mentioned that the silver sword has hunted down and killed this guy's descendents, but I was under the impression it was more of a case by case basis.

Yes it was a case by case basis. The Silver Swords did not wipe out whole populations in its efforts. They basically found out what they could about Mesodar's back ground, used what magic they could to track down descendents and killed those. Obviously they failed. And some might argue with this method of killing people with out a trial, but it was not wholesale slaughter.
It might even have been more than that. Most of the hunting was done in the first years after the great war and much of that info has been lost over 3,000 years. Maybe they just imprisoned people until they died or sent them to a monestary to live in exile and no chance to sire children. Or something like that.
Ally has made a jump that is not supported by facts. He may still believe it all he wants.

Listening to Flints stories, Harp thinks back to this most recent adventure. They had only been gone a few weeks, but so much had happened (OOC: Right Mark - we were actually in Bodentown for less than a week, right. If I am off greatly, please retcon to make the timeline work). He knew the druids wielded great power when out in the open, but the destruction he had seen at the estate and in Bodentown had been nearly complete. A fire running through a forest would not have been more complete in the damage done.
When Flint speaks of someone above Faldor, Harp's ear perk up. This was something the Order would want to know. "Mountain Father, was Acer able to give you any idea as to who or what this other person was? What their goals were? Anything that might help us?"

Flint looks at Salix "It is a bear, but a more primitive form. It depends more on it's strength then the cunning used by the bears today. It's spirit is very powerful but also seductive. As you travel the world you may encounter animals of all types like this. Creatures that are more powerful but more primitive then the ones people normally see. These more primitive forms are usually found in very secluded places, far from any forces of civilization."

The evening seems to last forever. After the private meeting in the Stallions house the party rejoins the rest of the herd for a real celebration. Songs are sung, stories are told and Mund wrestles with a centaur. They make it two out of three falls. Mund looses the first bout but just barely. As he is getting ready for the second bout Salix leans over and tells him "You're never going to win by over powering him. He must weigh 10 time what you do. You will have to finesse him. Centaurs do have horse legs. They work differently than human legs. Let me show you." Salix demonstrates what he is talking about and Mund gets the idea. Smiling his biggest smile, Mund heads in to the next bout.
It takes a while and the barbarian is almost pinned once, but he is finally able to get into the needed position and make his move. The centaur's legs buckle and like a flash, Mund is on top, applying a pressure hold until his foe signals his submission. The third fight goes even faster and Mund wins his bout. He offers his hand to the centaur on the ground saying "I win. I'll buy the ale." The smoldering look in the centaurs face disappears at the offer of ale and the two go walking off towards the ale cask, talking about the bout.
The next morning the party is woken by the sound of centaurs starting to work around camp. Flint wakes everyone up "Let's go people. There's a lot to do today. We have to get back to the main grove and get you folks back on your way home." Half an hour later the party has had breakfast and is heading towards the waterfall where they entered the valley. When they get there Flint turns to the Stallion and tells him "Keep on your guard. It seems things are starting to move in the world. While the gem we took might have been the reason Faldor was trying to get here, the WorldTree itself is enough reason for concern. I will talk to the other druid councils about getting more help for you or at least more supplies."
The Stallion nods his thanks "We will also start posting more of a guard here at the falls and on the perimeter of the valley. I will talk to the others of the forest about this." He puts out his hand and Flint grabs it in a friendly shake. "I will miss Acer" says the Stallion "but I think he choose wisely when he selected you to replace him. May your hoof never chip." Flint smiles and replies "May your main flow like the wind and your tail stay untangled." The Stallion bows once more and Flint turns to the falls. He chants the prayer of passage and signals the party to move through the falls. They follow his instructions, and just as last time, they step out of the falls into a new scene.
It takes them a second to realize that this is not the same falls that they had used to get to the valley. Salix looks around "This falls is near the grove where we started. Home." He says this wistfully, realizing that he is about to head back out on the road. Flint leads the party back to the main druid village. The news of what has happened at Bodentown and to Acer has already spread through the camp and the party's horses and gear are ready to go. "Remember Salix" says Flint "there will be trying times ahead. You are our contact with the outside world. I give you authority to do what you think best in this contest. Send word when you can. We will send word to the other councils of what has transpired. It might take a while for the word to spread everywhere, but you can expect basic help from any druid you encounter. Now go and return the gem. Save the world."
The next three weeks are spent on the road back to Gorn. The last time they had come this way things had been almost a blur. Now they have time to relax a bit. Harp and Salix still set a good pace, but they have no need of the hurtloam. Through rain and sun the party makes its way south east along the North Road. They ride past the Pass of Undulant, where they have been attack twice in the past. This time they encounter no one. On the 20th day, two hours after lunch, they crest a small rise and see a familiar site, the boarder crossing into Schon.
OODM: If any one wants to do a leveling story that happens on the trip back they can. Any role playing between the party can be done. I will see if I can write up more today or tonight.

Also I am finding myself in a small quandry.
The archives are down while Mike makes a move to a new host and new software. I use the archive to keep track of place and people names for minor NPC character. For example I was going to have the party meet the border guard that they have met several times before. I don't remember his name and can not find the archive where the party met him last to find out his name.
I can do one of two things. Wait a day or two and see if Mike gets the archives up and running, or I can make up new names and have people fill in the name with the right one when the archives get up.
What is your thoughts?

After a few times, I finally was able to summon the strength of the bear like I normally do, but then he he turned into a giant cat and tore out my guts, again and again."

Allistair had thought Mund seemed a little distant the past few days while they were travelling, and he had been talking about bears alot recently.
"As to how much the dreams have real meaning, I can't say for sure, since I have no specialty in using magic to interpret dreams, tell the future, etc. However I am reminded of some things I heard from Getorix, the shaman back at our village."
"After you left the village, I started studying with Getorix, and he tried to teach me some of his magic. It turned out I didn't have a gift for the innate magic that he used, but he recognized my potential for scholarly magic, which is how I was able to go to the city to study. Anyway, while I was studying with him I had to learn and memorize the tales of our people. You probably don't remember, since you always were drunk or asleep during the festivals when Getorix would recite them, but there were some pretty interesting stories."

Back in Gorn

As the party approaches the small fort complex a familiar face rides out to greet them. Lt. Halpin, along with half a dozen soldiers, rides up slowly. Halpin's voice rings out "Sgt. Harp. You keep showing up here a few more times and I'm going to think you are after my job." The man's grin is wide and his face open. He seems completely relaxed. "How can we help you this time? It's been almost two months since you were through here last. Are you still on the same mission as when you blew through here like a whirlwind the last time?" Harp rides up and clasps the man's hand "We have accomplished that mission and are heading home to report in. Any news?" The two start discussing current events in Schon.
The party spends the night at the fort. The food is plain but filling. They tell stories with the soldiers but keep the story of what happened on their mission to themselves. After a good night sleep and a hearty breakfast the party starts the last leg of their journey. Several days later, around noon, they come with in site of the walls of Gorn. An escort of Silver Swords rides out and accompanies them to the Chapter House of the order. The party cleans up and at dinner time is presented to Anglewing. "Sergeant Harp" he says "were you able to get it?" Harp brings out the bag that he had kept the gem in and unties it. He dumps the emerald out onto Angelwing's hand. "Here it is Sir. One of the gems of Valorshield." Angelwing turns and hands the gem to Orpal and the brother takes the gem, along with an escort, out of the room.
"I thank you" Angelwing says "all of you, for this. Join me for dinner tonight and tell me the tale of this adventure. We will also talk of your reward." Mund's eyes light up at the mention of reward and the party goes back to their rooms to prepare for dinner. An hour later the party is in a private dinning room with Angelwing and several high ranking members of the order, such as Ranthir's father. The meal is fabulous and they spend hours telling the paladins about their last adventure. At Salix's request they leave a few things about the Druid's out of the tale. Salix does inform Anglewing that there are things he has asked his companions to keep to themselves. "I hope you will not force Harp or Ragnar to break their bond of friendship with me just to satisfy your curiosity. The things I have asked them to hold silent on have no bearing on the larger mission, but deal with the inner workings of the Druids." Anglewing reluctantly agrees.
As the meal comes to a finish Angelwing stands "I propose a toast. To Harp, Salix, Ranthir, Surin, Kal, Ragnar, Mund and Allistair. May they stay courageous and strong." The other paladins stand and salute the party. As desert is being served Angelwing tells them "As a sign of our appreciation, the order will take care of your upkeep while you are in Gorn. If you wish to stay here at the Chapter House, you would be our guests. If you wish to stay someplace in town, you may do so. Have the owner send someone to the quartermaster and he will arrange payment. Also I will put the Order's weaponsmith and armorsmith at your disposal if you want to have armor or weapons made or repaired. Mage Allistair, I will also request that the Mage guild allow you access to their library or scrolls and spells. If anyone else needs something, please let me know and we will see what we can do to help."
"I would also ask if all of you are willing to stay on until we can decipher were the next gem is? You 8 have proven yourselves twice and have shown yourselves to be resourceful and brave. I think we could do worse."
OODM: Any role playing or leveling up stories can happen now. They can be set on the trip back if you want. The party will have 1 month in town before they are called back. I think I made the trip back too fast. The trip back should have taken twice as long as the trip up. I think the trip up took two weeks so the trip back should have taken 4 weeks. With the week or so at Bodentown and the two days or so with the druids, the whole adventure took, by my accounting, two months or so. That should put the time at late summer, I think.
As to the reward, there is a gold piece limit on what you can get. My books are at home so I will get that for you later. Let me know if you want to sell anything. You can also have current weapons enhanced or new ones made. The same with armor. You will get a very favorable price. Let me know what you are looking for and we can role play it.

I will assume that in a period of a couple of days that Ally would identify the items recovered while on the adventure. The order will supply the pearls needed. I will also list the approx. value of each item
Here is the list:

Magic weapons and armor can be done upgraded at the Chapter House for a reduced fee. All other magic items must be picked up in the city. You can contact me to get the prices and then role play the selling/buying of the items.

A Bane weapon has an enchantment on it that makes it more effective against a particular race/monster. In this case, it is against humans. The bane enchanment means that against humans it acts as an enchantment 2 levels higher than it normally is (+3 vs. +1 in this case), as well as doing and extra 2d6 of damage. If Surin were to do a sneak attack against a human with this dagger, he would do his normal d4, + 2d6 for bane,, +4d6 of sneak attack damage. It is a cool benefit, but it only gains this extra stuff against 1 type of creature.

Well since getting the gem took a little while longer than I had planned, I will be starting the next adventure next Monday, Aug. 20. This week people can write up their leveling stories and do any role playing around town. If you want me to role play the merchant/person you are dealing with that is fine with me.
On a sort of related note, as some of you know, Mike at Sakeriver has moved his site to a new server. It looks like he has not moved the character sheets or the archives over yet. He will be out of town this week so it will be next week at the earliest before this happens. I am fairly sure that this means we will not have access to the character sheets until next week.

The price is different between armor and weapons.
To go from +1 armor to +2 goes like this.
+1 armor cost 1,000 gp
+2 armor cost 4,000 gp
Difference 3,000 gp. X 3/4 the cost = 2,2250 to go from +1 to +2 armor.
Weapons are a bit more.
+1 bonus weapon is 2,000 gp
+2 bonus weapon is 8,000 gp
difference is 6,000 gp X 3/4 the cost = 4,500 gp to go from +1 to +2 bonus weapon.
Please note that you can add effects to weapons, such as frost or fire etc. For example Munds frost axe has a +1 bonus to hit and damge but the frost feature, which adds 1D6 damage, counts as another +1. So Munds axe is considered to be a +2 weapon for cost.
The flaming axe, +2 flame, counts as a +3 weapon.
I hope this makes sense.

Subject: Something goes growl in the night
The trip home is, for the most part, uneventful. One night, about a fortnight into the journey, the party, except for Kal who is on guard duty, is sound asleep in camp. The fire had been banked and the horses tethered to a picket line 50 yards distant. The night was clear and the stars and the moons were out. Kal, on third watch, slowly makes his rounds, the plentiful light of the moons and stars letting him see almost like it was daytime. The ground is grassy and soft with the occasional tree or bush. Kal hardly makes a noise as he moves slowly around the camp, maybe 25 yards out from where the others are sleeping. He can hear Harp's loud snoring and Ragnar's steady, deep breathing. Mund, off a bit by himself, seems to be sleeping fitfully, which he has done most nights since they left the woods.
It takes Kal a few seconds to realize that he has just heard something. He tries to pinpoint it source but something is not right. It is coming from the middle of the camp. Kal starts hurrying to the camp. As he closes he sees a large hulking figure in the light of the fire. It looks like a bear has made it way into the middle of the camp. It lets out a bellow of rage and the rest of the camp starts awake at the noise.
OODM: What do you guys want to do?

Subject: Harp's time off
After the meeting with Angelwing,Harp says farewell to his friends and lets them know that he would get back in touch with them in a week or so. As Harp heads back to his quarters at the Chapter House, Angelwing motions him over. "Sergant, report to my office tomorrow morning right after morning prayer. I will debrief you then". Saluting in reply, Harp heads off to his room.
Arriving a few minutes later, Harp shrugs off his armor, unslings his weapons, and heads off to the baths. Twenty minutes later, feeling refreshed and phsically cleansed, he dons his cleric robes and heads back to the main part of the Chapter House. Moving to the chappel, he sees that it is empty, which is not surprising given the time of day.
Kneeling down on the hard wood, Harp goes through the basic prayers of the Order. His mind calming, he reflects on the recent journey. He slowly goes over what had happened, focusing on his actions. Angelwing would be reviwing his decisions, and he would have to answer for them. For the most part, he had done the Order proud, with the exception of the night he had tried to sneak out and find Thanga.
That had not only almost cost him his life, but it had almost cost Kal his. It had not been a mistake in battle, it had not been a mistake honestly made, it had been a mistake based on his physical desires, even when he had been warned about the dangers of Bodentown after dark. He would have to own up to that the following day. He thoguht carefully about his position within the group. This had been Salix's adventure to lead, but Harp kept finding himself giving orders before being asked to do so. He had become proud - more confident in his abiltiy to decide - maybe too confident. Granted, he had training from the military side of the Order, and when it came to a fight, he had a decent head for using what advantages they had while keeping thier weaknesses as well protected as possible. He would have to talk to Angelwing about that in the morning.
After about an hour or so of more prayer and introspection, Harp leaves the chapel and heads back to his room. He pulls out his sword and armor and starts the long, slow process of repairing and mending the nicks, cuts, gouges, and other wear and tear that had accumulated over the past weeks. He could use some of the basic graces of the Battlelord, and if needed, he would do so, but there was something simply pleasing about doing this work by hand. Finally, after a couple of hours more, and a quick bite from the kitchen, he heads back to his room for a good nights sleep.
